  • SPORTS: Moyes Baffled How He Defeated Barcelona

    David Moyes admits he had always wondered how to “possibly get a result” against Barcelona after his Real Sociedad side beat the Catalans 1-0.

    In his first match against the four-time European champions, the former Manchester United boss guided Sociedad to just a second La liga win under him.

    Moyes said: “The win feels similar to the early days at Everton.
    “How was I ever going to get a result against the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, Man United at that time?”

    Jordi Alba’s second-minute own goal proved decisive as Sociedad’s brave defensive effort stopped Barcelona from going top of La Liga, after Real Madrid’s loss at Valencia earlier in the day.
    The victory moved Moyes’s men up four places to 13th in the league with the Scot losing just once in six league games since being appointed in November.
    Moyes was sacked by Manchester United only 10 months after succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson.
    “We’ve talked about Barcelona at my past clubs, at Everton and at Manchester United. I’ve watched them with admiration and we used to wonder how to possibly get a result against them,” said Moyes.
    Barcelona have lost three times in La Liga this season
    “Tonight I had the opportunity; it was a long night, we scored early and I would like to have given them a harder game. We did make it very difficult for them, though.
    “I would like to be competing against Barca, Real Madrid, Atletico, Valencia and Sevilla at the top of the league. To do that we have to make the squad stronger.”
    Barcelona manager Luis Enrique surprised many with his team selection, leaving Lionel Messi, Neymar and Dani Alves on the substitutes’ bench as La Liga resumed after a fortnight’s winter break.
    “I expected Neymar and Messi to maybe be on the bench,” said Moyes. “I’ve managed a very big club, you have a big squad and a lot of games. The big games come later for these teams – April time – and you have to give the big players rest to keep them fresh for then.
    “I thought Luis Enrique made the right decision and the players that played tonight are really good players. 
    He knows his squad the best and in his position I would probably have done the same thing.
    “The winter break should definitely be considered in the Premier League. We’re able to give the players a week off, then we came in and trained for a week before tonight. It would be great for the teams in England and great for the managers as well, to feel they could have a break after that hectic Christmas period.”

  • POLITICS: How Buhari Scaled Through APC Presidential Screening

    Beginning from last week, the Nigerian political space had been awash with the debates attempting on one hand, to demonstrate the literate status, and other the other hand, the illiterate status of the presidential aspirant of the All Progressive Congress(APC) -the person of Muhammadu Buhari.

    What is understood to have sparked the row in the first place is when Muhammadu Buhari is said to have deposed for the third time before INEC that the Secretary, Nigeria’s Military Board, is keeping his certificates. If we recall, in the 2007 and 2011 General Elections, the Peoples’ General only deposed affidavits. Why did he not get them from the military after twenty-seven years of retirement and seven years of contesting for the same office? The foregone questions are yet to be reasonably answered by either Buhari  or his cronies.

    However, we proceed to inquiring into the subject under review. What are the premises upon which the APC Presidential Screening Committee cleared Major General Buhari?

    According to Section 131(d) of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution  as amended, it is submitted that a person shall be qualified to be elected into the office of president if ‘he has been educated to at least School Certificate level or its equivalent’.
      
    Tunji Abayomi, a member of APC Screening Committee, contends that the constitution does not say such a candidate should present a certificate, rather, he should be educated to the level of SSCE.The implication is that Buhari can as well stand for elections because he is not barred by any valid constitutional proposition.

    Mr. Abayomi explains that when the committee sat on this matter, they submitted that GMB in view of his military experienced could be said to have the met the educational requirement of SSCE. The question is: Can’t M. Buhari make available in hard copies the educational certificates he claims to have bagged by displaying them/it at INEC office? Why is Buhari and his cohorts insulting Nigerians?

    While I agree with the argument that the presence of the hard copy of a certificate does not equate to the fact that an individual in possession of such is educated, the quandary is with the dishonesty and double-dealings with which the subject has been managed. It suggest something fishy is under cover.

    To my mind, it is either Major General Muhammadu Buhari did not attend formal education or he had very poor results that are not fit for public consumption, especially such that may not be in synch with the perfectionist picture that revolves around his person.  

    Nevertheless, my grouse borders around the embarrassment Buhari and the APC have caused themselves and this country in the international community. It compels the thinking electorates to hold in profound doubt the quality in the notion of change the APC is seen to tout. In truth, the assertion by the late Chinua Achebe in his 1984 booklet, which reads unequivocally that ‘the trouble with Nigeria is the failure of leadership…’  still holds water.

    Keith Harrel has categorically said that one of the fundamental things that every person who wants to improve his or her life should work on is his or her attitude. Because, your attitude determines so much about how your life and how far you will go in life. Jim Rohn intoned that if you want to succeed in life, you need to work harder on yourself than you do on your job. This is to make you become better and of more value which also affects whatever you are involved in.

    Your attitude is like the engine that runs the car. The more finely tuned that engine is, the better the car will run. The same is true with your life. If you keep your attitude up, if you make it fantastic, you will see so much about your life open right up and flourish.

    Attitude is not predisposed or genetic. Attitude is usually acquired or developed. That is why William James, a great psychologist-philosopher said ‘The greatest discovery of my generation is that people can alter their lives by altering their attitudes of mind’. One of the greatest realisation of our time is that everyone has the potential to improve the quality of their personal and professional lives. That is why humans are potentially created to be progressive. But you must be willing to acquire the skills that will guide you to a place of self discovery, where you can then tap into the power of your positive attitude. You may not be able change your height or your body type, but you can change your attitude. That is why each of us has the power to develop and maintain a positive attitude that works for us, that improves the quality of our lives and enables us to accomplish our lifes’ objectives. Keith Harrel advised that, ‘your attitude should be an indication of where you desire to go in life and not a reflection of what you have been through’.

    Thus, no matter your age, your current position, or station in life, your gender, or marital status, a positive attitude can make an incredible difference in your life and in the lives of others. Attitude is the foundation and support of everything you do, a key element in the process of controlling your destiny and achieving mastery in your personal and professional life. The most beneficial change that can turn one’s life around is a change for positive attitude. But if you want an attitude that works for you, that improves the quality of your life and enables you to accomplish your dreams, you have to work at it. You can’t just sit around and wait for a positive attitude to come over you.

  • NEWS: British Ebola Nurse In Critical Condition

    A British nurse who contracted Ebola in sierra Leone is in a critical condition. Doctors have been unable to use the Zmapp vaccines as there are no more global supplies.

    Cafferkey, who normally works as a state-employed nurse in Scotland, had been volunteering in Sierra Leone’s Kerry Town with the charity Save the Children when she contracted the deadly virus. while offering assistant to Ebola patient in sierra Leone 


    Doctors said that the case of the British nurse Cafferkey has deteriorated badly on Saturday.
    “The condition of Pauline Cafferkey has gradually deteriorated over the past two days and is now critical,” the Royal Free Hospital in London said in a statement.


    The patient has been treated with blood plasma from an Ebola patient who had recovered from the administration of the Zmapp vaccine. Doctors hope that the antibodies contained in the fluid could help her fight the virus. 
    “We are giving her the very best care possible. However, the next few days will be crucial,” said infectious diseases consultant Dr. Michael Jacobs at the time. “The disease has a variable course and we will know much more in a week’s time.”

    16. 2015 shall be a year of SUPERNATURAL ELEVATIONS AND PROMOTIONS. Someone will be lying down in the afternoon; they will wake you and tell you that, you have just been given an appointment.
    17. BUSINESS DOORS shall open more and more in China and India. China and India will fast be substituting and competing with Dubai and America.
    18. COMMUNITY POLICING shall be encouraged to stop the sporadic effect of terrorism in Nigeria, which seem to be tending to the south, but is stopped by a miraculous hand.
    19. 2015 shall be a year of POISONING. Be careful where you eat and drink.
    20. There is a stormy flight but it will not crash (one of you will be sitting on seat no. 5D).
    21. 2015 shall be another beautiful year for the NIGERIA CUSTOM SERVICE as they flag up new policies that will counter crime and boost the economy.
    22. 2015 is a year of MIRACULOUS MARRIAGES, dedications and anniversaries.
    23. Good news for SIERRA LEONE ON EBOLA. There shall be extinction of Ebola in 2015 in Sierra Leone and that will bring hope for other African countries, thus says the LORD.

    27. A CLOUDY DAY in 2015. People are taking photographs; it is very colourful and photographic, but it is a sign of the end time.
    28. There shall be a popular new well advertised ALCOHOLIC DRINK in the market. It will be so popular, but it will promote drunkenness. Please don’t be tempted.
    29. If you want to go into new field of studies that has future in this country, that will of high demand, GO AND STUDY ECONOMICS OR AGRICULTURE.
    30. WOMEN SOLIDARITY, especially for their inclusiveness in electoral offices. I see women matching to Aso Rock.
    31. MINISTERS OF THE GOSPEL seem to be facing a common enemy and in 2015, there shall be a coming together and unity of ministers from different churches and denominations.
    32. In 2015 FOUNDING FATHERS of Nigeria, our heroes past, shall be immortalized, not just honoured, but immortalized. I see their photographs and their memories being immortalized.
    33. I see RED COLOURS, people wearing red. I don’t know the meaning.
    34. 2015, A year when the nation’s Federal ARMY shall be retrained, empowered and motivated. The Nigerian army shall enjoy international collaboration that was lacking.
    35. A lot of government parastatals, e.g. the NTA (Nigeria Television Authority), shall go through major reformations, but first they will experience a shaking. Their staff should brazen out.
    36. ENGLISH TEACHERS shall have reason to celebrate in 2015 because of doors that will open for them nationally and internationally.
    37. RIVERS STATE shall be nominated as a model state in Africa and shall receive international awards.
    38. NIGERIAN SPORT: there shall be introduction of other sporting activities to diversify from football and soccer.
    39. YAR’ ADUA: IMMORTALIZATION of Yar’adua has become good news for the family of the former president. This legacy though it shall be internationally applauded, but it shall be locally resisted and a subject of debate.
    40. 2015 shall be a year of EXTREME HOT WEATHER; intense heat wave, shall extend from the north to the southern part of the country.
    41. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA: A popular politician, especially John Kerry will be going through political storm, but it will bring him an elevation and promotion. He will reign and rule in American politics.
    42. ISRAEL again shall be in the center of the news. Pilgrimage will be reduced and restricted and it will affect Israeli international relationships.
    43. WHEAT shall be promoted as a substitute for rice consumption in Nigeria, and many other food crops will enjoy substitute in Nigerian food crop consumptions.
    44. 15th January, 2015 prayer is required to avert INTERNATIONAL OR NATIONAL OCCURRENCE that will shake the calendar.
    45. Prayer is needed three times for the DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO. They will go through some shaking.
    46. FARMING will be promoted in Nigeria economy. Farmers will enjoy governmental support more than ever before.
    47. The ECONOMY OF NIGERIA shall be shaken, but this will bring about diversification from mono economy of dependency on oil.
    48. The Lord says, “I will sift this nation like a woman sifting wheat to separate the chaffs.” Though the process shall be painful, but at the end, my will shall be done in Nigeria. Nobody should be afraid, a shaking is coming in Nigeria, but it will establish the will of God.
    49. I saw the BROOM TURN INTO TWO. One of the bundles of broom is fitly tied, very healthy and together, but the other bundle is divided, saggy, the robe loosed and scattered and no longer holding together.
    50. In OUR CHURCH this year, it shall become venue for victorious ceremonies and celebrations.
    51. The rise of FULANI WOMEN MOVEMENT. They are fully with their Islamic covering, but they are opposing terrorism. They are lending a voice together with the federal government against the current terrorist activities and they are shouting, “Enough is enough”.
    52. High cases of planned attack on TEENAGERS, rape cases on the increase, but all these shall be exposed and bulged in 2015. Therefore, 2015 is not a good year for rapists and child abusers.
    53. CONSTRUCTION COMPANIES will make money this year. Construction companies owners should get ready to work.
    54. FEDERAL GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION IN A HIGH PROFILE LEGAL MATTER, according to them because of public interest, but it is meeting with vehement public protest.
    55. FISHING: great prosperity is in the sea, the Lord is telling people like he told Peter, “Go to the sea”. Your money is in the sea. Fishing will bring high source of revenue, both to the government and to those that will enter the business.

    82. 2015 is a year of COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY IN NIGERIA, new skills will be developed, new inventions in communication.
    83. The PAPAL EMPIRE will be shaken this year 2015. God save the Pope in Jesus name.

  • NEWS: Fire Destroys 10 Shops In Calabar

     Tragedy struck as the entire tyre section of the Bedwell Market in Calabar metropolis was yesterday Saturday 3 January was engulfed with fire destroying goods worth millions of naira.

      Ten shops including a ware house loaded with different types and sizes of car tyres were affected by the fire outbreak and about five persons were injured while trying to put off the fire.

      An eye witness recounted that the fire started around 9.am and had destroyed some shops at a particular axis of the bedwell market while few of the traders were able to recover their goods from the raging fire.
      The traders had mourned bitterly over their goods that perished alongside with the fire. They complained that the fire service men had arrived three hours later with a complaint on the inability to carry out their duties due to the unavailability of a functional vehicle.
      A trader named Sony said “I was just lucky to remove my tyres before the fire got to my shop. And I can tell you that people have lost millions of naira because most of us just ordered goods for the Christmas and the New Year.”
      A victim by name, Mr. Nkem Onyedilim, said “I am totally gone. I have lost all my life investment to the inferno. Why should such happen to us at this crucial period when some of us bought the tyres on credit?
    “This is the beginning of a new life. I appeal to emergency authorities to come to our aid, because I have lost close to N5m to the fire. Besides, my brother also is affected and we don’t know what to do right now.”

  • NEWS: Palestinian Minor Killed By Egypt Border Guards

    Gaza’s health ministry confirms on Saturday the death of a Palestinian minor who attempted to pass from Gaza Strip to Egypt illegally.


    The seventeen year old Zaki El- Hobi was shot in the back through the heart.  Gaza interior ministry had condemned the incident:
    ”We consider it a grave development and excessive use of force, not in line with neighbouring relationships between brothers,” Gaza’s interior ministry spokesman Eyad El – Bezm said in a statement.
      
    This is the first incident where a Palestinian is shot dead at the border since Egypt began its establishment of a bigger zone to help fight a militant revolt in Sinai Peninsula.


     Egypt’s army spokesman released a statement on Saturday on how they have successfully prevented attempts of illegal entry of some Palestinians.


    However, Egyptian sources told Reuters that youths that came for cigarettes to sell back in the besieged  Gaza string were arrested . Egypt had destroyed 1,800 tunnels that had been used to smuggle goods into Gaza in fear of weapons being smuggled into Sinai where the Egyptians armed forces are battling a militant insurgency.

    ”If you have a 16 GB iPhone, you’ve probably noticed that you don’t really have 16 GB of storage space — some of that space is taken up by Apple’s iOS software. But you probably haven’t thought to sue Apple over it”.

    That’s the difference between you and two Apple customers in Miami who sued Apple for their incredible shrinking storage.
    The plaintiffs filed their lawsuit in a California federal court on Tuesday, and they are seeking permission to make their complaint a class action suit. They are seeking more than $5 million in damages for what they say is Apple’s false advertising.
    Apple’s new iOS 8 software takes up 3 GB of storage on an iPhone 6. That’s 19% of the phone’s 16 GB of advertised storage. The iOS 8 software takes up 20% of an iPhone 6 Plus’ storage and 21% of an iPad’s free space.
    According our correspondence; “Apple’s misrepresentations and omissions are deceptive and  as such misleads costomers because they omit material facts that an average consumer would consider in deciding whether to purchase its products,” the plaintiffs say in their complaint.
    Rather than try to cram everything into what little space they have on their smartphones, many people choose to back up their photos, videos and other content on cloud services, such as Apple’s iCloud. But the plaintiffs say that’s all part of Apple’s game.
    “Apple exploits the discrepancy between represented and available capacity for its own gain by offering to sell, and by selling, cloud storage capacity to purchasers whose internal storage capacity is at or near exhaustion,” the complaint says.
