  • SPORTS: Real Madrid Star Cristiano Ronald Could Play For Another Club

    By Samuel Ekun

Football agent Jorge Mendes has revealed that former Manchester United hero Cristiano Ronaldo could move on from Real Madrid for another club in the near future.
The Portuguese forward has been the subject of much speculation over the past few weeks with a number of top European clubs harbouring hopes of concluding a deal.
French giants Paris Saint-Germain were always interested due to their advancing project, but his former club United were also said to have monitored his situation carefully.
In fact, rumours intensified after Los Blancos endured a nightmare campaign during Jose Mourinho’s final season in charge, and former United teammate Rio Ferdinand tried to personally persuade the star to return to Old Trafford.
Yet, after a failed attempt the arrival of Italian boss Carlo Ancelotti and the ensued success has all but ended the Red Devils’ hopes of welcoming back their former idol. Or has it?
Super-agent Jorge Mendes is usually quite vocal surrounding the on-goings of his client – and friend – and he revealed yesterday that Ronaldo could play for another club after the La Liga giants.
Fresh hopes for the Old Trafford outfit? Well, not exactly as the 29-year-old is said to only be considering a move to the United States once he decides to call it a day on his time in the Spanish capital.
“He will finish his career at Real Madrid, and after that, perhaps he will go to the United States. Only God knows what will happen,” Mendes was quoted as saying by Spanish newspaper AS.
PSG star’s agent reveals Manchester United interest
Ronaldo has scored an amazing 26 La Liga goals in 15 matches so far this season, breaking numerous records and receiving a host of plaudits.
He is the big favourite to win the Ballon d’Or award ahead of his rival Lionel Messi, and there seems to be no limits to how much more he can achieve in the game.
  • SPORTS: Ander Herrera Makes Manchester United History As A Spanish Player

    By Samuel Ekun

Manchester United overcame Yeovil Town 2-0 with goals from Ander Herrera and Angel di Maria.

Manchester United summer signing Ander Herrera wrote his name in the club’s history books by becoming their first Spaniard to score in the FA Cup.
The Spanish midfielder was a long-term target and finally joined the Red Devils in the summer from Athletic Bilbao for a reported £29 million fee.
Without a specific role in Louis van Gaal’s side, Herrera has impressed when called upon despite his impact so far being limited due to a succession of niggling injuries.
Hinting before the Yeovil Town clash on Twitter that he could be selected for the game, the 25-year-old enjoyed a history-making comeback performance in the most unlikely of places.
With the game tied at 0-0 midway through the second half, Herrera’s superb volley set the visitors on their way to a comfortable 2-0 victory, with Angel di Maria grabbing Van Gaal’s side’s second.
Herrera’s net-buster, though, is the one which will rightly make the headlines, as his fine FA Cup strike was the first United goal to come from a Spaniard in the competition’s 144-year history.
Certainly not a bad way to make his mark on his return from injury.
PSG star’s agent reveals Manchester United interest
Surprisingly, his absence from the side has coincided with the Old Trafford outfit’s best run of the season as Van Gaal’s men extend their unbeaten run to 11 games in all competitions.
Nevertheless, Herrera’s creativity has been one of the high points for United this season as the former Real Zaragoza man has notched two goals and three assists in just six Premier League starts.

  • POLITICS: Presisent Goodluck Jonathan Trending On Twitter Again!

    By Efio-Ita Nyok

As Nigerians inch closer towards the 2015 presidential election slated for 14 February by the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) as headed by Professor Attahiru Jega, a handful of virtual trends characterise our political clime, notable among which is the hash tag #WhyGEJ.

As at last week it was #GEJ_Wins2015 that was the toast of the Nigerian electorates on Twitter. Now, it is #WhyGEJ.

This hash tag is inciting a number of reactions from Nigerians as to why his second term ambition is endorsed or perceived to be other wise. In some of these reactions, some of the achievements of President Goodluck Jonathan are highlighted as premises for their support for him, whereas some angry reactions emphasise on the failures of his administration.

For instance, one of the tweets incited by the trending hash tag #WhyGEJ by one The Amazing Jona submits that, ‘Rehabilitation of the Lagos-Jeba-Kano Rail line, and Ilorin-Offfa Rail line’, and ‘Rehabilitation of the Ilorin International Airport’ explains why GEJ should be elected for a second term. On his part, one Andre Sly rationalises his support for GEJ’s re-election to the premise that, ‘When America refused to give him Ebola serum, he used prayer to kill…’. For one Badmus Bello Shuaibu, ‘President Goodluck Jonathan aims and shoot in one fell swoop and we want him back in office in 2015’.

However, on other social media platforms some Nigerians have expressed their disappointment with the Jonathan administration especially the inability to find a solution to the captured Chibok schoolgirls. For these lots, security of lives and properties of the citizenry should be the priority of any government.

Be that as it may, one should look out for how long these virtual trend will last, and what is likely to overtake it.

  • SPORTS: Real Madrid Unbeaten Streak Ended by Superb Valencia

    By Samuel Ekun

Real Madrid’s club record 22-match winning run was ended by Nicolas Otamendi’s fine header as Valencia came from behind to secure a famous victory.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s penalty put Real in front, his 33rd goal of the season.
But Valencia made it 1-1 seven minutes into the second half through Antonio Barragan’s deflected shot.
Otamendi then powered the ball in from a corner but Madrid stayed top of La Liga thanks to Barcelona’s 1-0 defeat to David Moyes’s Real Sociedad.
It was Real’s first defeat since they lost to city rivals and La Liga champions Atletico Madrid on 13 September.
The result lifted Valencia, beaten just once at home all season, into the Champions League places.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s early penalty was his 26th league goal of the season
Carlo Ancelotti’s side would not have envisaged that scenario when they took an early lead through Ronaldo.
After Gareth Bale had been fouled, a free-kick from Tony Kroos was flicked on by Bale against the arm of on-loan Manchester City striker Alvaro Negredo.
Ronaldo converted from the spot but then missed an excellent chance to double Real’s lead when he rounded goalkeeper Diego Alves but, from a tight angle, shot into the side netting.
Valencia had five players booked in a niggly first half but struck a post through a deflected Andre Gomes shot in stoppage time.
And they were the better side in the second half, levelling when former Liverpool player Barragan scored his first league goal for the club with a shot which was diverted past Iker Casillas by defender Pepe.
Bale was then denied by an excellent Otamendi tackle at the other end before the Argentina international won it with a towering header with 25 minutes to go.
Negredo impressed for Valencia, who could have spared themselves some anxious late moments, notably when Isco’s close-range header was saved by Alves, had Barragan not wasted another excellent chance when he shot wide with just Casillas to beat.
Holders Real will now be looking to bounce back against their local rivals in the first leg of their Copa del Rey last-16 tie on Wednesday night, when Fernando Torres could make his first appearance since re-joining Atletico on loan.
    Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti:
“There were important points of the match where we didn’t take our chances, but as I’ve said in football this happens. You can’t always be efficient up front.
“I don’t think it will affect the team. It has happened after 22 victories.
“The season is very long and we are well-positioned in La Liga and have a lot of competitions.
“This won’t affect us because we know all the things we have done well until now.”
On-loan Manchester City striker Alvaro Negredo played against his former club
Ronaldo missed an excellent chance to give Real a 2-0 lead

  • SPORTS: Fernando Torres Emotional Return To Atletico Madrid Pulled Out 45,000 Fans

    By Samuel Ekun

Torres is re-joining the La Liga champions from AC Milan seven-and-a-half-years after leaving for Liverpool.
His loan, which runs until the end of the season, will be made official on Monday but he watched Atletico’s win over Levante on Saturday.
Torres, 30, said: “The club have grown and time has proved us right.”
He added: “I have also won trophies, but I want to win trophies here.
“I was missing something to motivate me, something I could only find here.
“Off the pitch I have been through many things. On a personal level I am more mature and very happy to be here.
“On the sporting level things have changed too. At 24 I realised something very hard, that I needed to leave so that the club and I could grow.
“It was the most difficult moment of my career.”
Analysis – Spanish football writer Andy West
It is difficult to overstate Fernando Torres’s popularity with Atletico fans, who remember the deadly force of nature he was in 2007 rather than the misfiring disappointment of the last two or three years.
As much as his goalscoring exploits, Torres was loved because he was a boyhood fan who had progressed through the youth ranks and played with such obvious pride in the Atletico jersey.
Torres joined Serie A club AC Milan from Chelsea, who paid a then British record transfer fee of £50m to sign him from Liverpool in January 2011.
The Italian club confirmed a permanent deal for Torres, following its own initial two-year loan deal, during the Christmas period, but have loaned him to Atletico until the end of the season after Italy winger Alessio Cerci, 27, arrived from the Spanish side.
Torres, who scored 84 goals in 214 league appearances for Atletico from 2001-2007, could make his debut against Real Madrid in the first leg of a round-of-16 Copa del Rey tie on Wednesday.
