With Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics now available, Atsushi Tomita decided to take to Twitter to reveal some interesting stories behind the development of some of the original games featured in the collection.
During the development of X-Men: Children of the Atom and Marvel Super Heroes, Tomita was an assistant designer before become a full-fledged designer for X-Men vs. Street Fighter. However, it turns out that this third game wasn’t originally planned to be called “X-Men vs. Street Fighter” as it was effectively being packaged as a direct sequel to X-Men: Children of the Atom.
“After X-Men: Children of the Atom and Marvel Super Heroes, I was promoted from a sub planner to a main planner on the upcoming X-Men project,” said Tomita. “The producer showed me, half-laughing, the planned character list, and half of them were from Street Fighter Alpha.”
“The producer showed me, half-laughing, the planned character list, and half of them were from Street Fighter Alpha. I felt with a roster like this, calling it X-Men 2 would be false advertising, so I changed the title to X-Men vs. Street Fighter.” — Atsushi Tomita
Essentially, this game would be expanding on the concept where Akuma was implemented as a secret fighter in X-Men: Children of the Atom. However, with the roster now being split between the Street Fighter and X-Men character, Tomita felt as though the title of the game had to reflect this.
“I felt with a roster like this, calling it X-Men 2 would be false advertising, so I changed the title to X-Men vs. Street Fighter,” stated Tomita.
Based on this, it sounds as though the game was originally being designed as “X-Men: Children of the Atom 2” or “X-Men 2” with a completely different subtitle. Amusingly, it almost sounds like the producer wasn’t being entirely serious due to him supposedly “half-laughing” when Tomita was presented with the list.
Ultimately, “X-Men vs. Street Fighter” is a fairly basic title of what the game is, but Tomita definitely made the correct decision by clearly outlining what this was supposed to be.
