The Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Ntufam Okon Owuna has Urged Beekeepers to protect Bees in order to ensure food security through continuous supply of honey.
Ntufam Owuna stated this when the Cross River State Beekeepers Association paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Calabar.
The Commissioner said that, bee sting is medicinal and the Honey it produces is good for the body.
He told the leadership of the Beekeepers to generate a reminder Memo to the Federal Ministry Agriculture to ensure that the Beekeeping equipment is released to the Beekeepers in the State.
Earlier in her remarks,the Chairman, Cross River State Beekeepers Association, Dr. Maria Onabe, said that the theme for this year’s Celebration is “Save the Bee” stating that, Bee is important to both the environment and our economy is more important than many people realise, and their populations are under threat.
She said that, Bees are vital to our way of life because they pollinate food crops, fertilising plants so that they can produce fruits, vegetables, seeds,amongst others
Dr. Onabe said that Cross River State has been chosen as the first model State for Beekeeping adding that the Honey Collection Center is located in Sankwala in Obanliku Local Government Area.
Beekeeping is a human activity of maintaining Honey Bees and producing honey for household uses and commercial purposes.
