  • Pakistan and China signs MOU on Lunar Research Stations

Pakistan has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with China to join the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) project. The ILRS project is led by China and aims to construct a permanent lunar base in the 2030s. The project is seen as a potential competitor to the NASA-led Artemis Program. The MOU titled “Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation on Lunar Research Stations” marks Pakistan’s formal participation in the international lunar research station program.

    Lunar Research Stations

The ILRS project is seen as a potential competitor to the NASA-led Artemis Program. As with the United States’ Artemis program, the agreements between China and smaller partners in their respective lunar projects are crucial. The actual contributions and returns in material, financial, political, and human terms remain to be seen.

    ILRS Background

The ILRS is a planned lunar base that is being led by the China National Space Administration (CNSA) and Roscosmos. The ILRS project aims to construct a permanent lunar base in the 2030s, with precursor missions in the 2020s. It is a scalable and maintainable, comprehensive scientific experiment facility that operates autonomously on the moon’s surface and in its orbit. The ILRS project is proposed by China and is to be jointly built by many countries. The project aims to establish a research platform and infrastructure complex on the moon’s surface and in its orbit, with the possibility of long-term research exploration.

China announced in April 2023 that it was establishing the International Lunar Research Station Cooperation Organization (ILRSCO) to coordinate and manage the project. The ILRS project has attracted partners such as Russia, Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates, and the Asia-Pacific Space Cooperation Organization.

China’s next step in its lunar exploration plans will be the launch of the Queqiao-2 lunar relay satellite early next year. This will be followed by the Chang’e-6 lunar far side sample return mission, which is due to launch in mid-2024.

Possible sites for a Chinese ILRS in the Lunar South Polar Region have been identified. The scientific and engineering objectives of the ILRS project include lunar research, exploration, and technology verification; supporting crewed lunar missions with the completed ILRS; and expanding and maintaining modules as needed.

    Pakistan joins China’s ILRS project

Pakistan officially joined the ILRS project a few days ago. Zhang Kejian, the administrator of the China National Space Administration (CNSA), and Moin ul Haque, the ambassador of Pakistan to China, signed an MOU between the CNSA and the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO). The MOU covers areas including engineering as well as operational aspects of the Chinese lunar base program.

The two parties will work together on the international lunar scientific research station and establish an expert working group. They will jointly show their aims and objectives in the subject matter, joint design, and data sharing. Both parties will analyze data together and train experts in the field.

Pakistan’s involvement in the ILRS project

Pakistan’s involvement in the ILRS project is not new. It is already involved in the Chang’e-6 lunar sample return mission, which is due to launch in mid-2024. Pakistan is working on the ICUBE-Q cubesat for the mission in cooperation with Shanghai Jiaotong University.

Pakistan and China have been strategic partners in the space sector for three decades. Since 1992, China has helped Pakistan develop and launch communications satellites and remote sensing satellites, among others. In June 2023, the head of Pakistan’s space agency visited the Deep Space Exploration Laboratory in Hefei to identify specific roles it could play in the ILRS project and to sign a cooperation agreement.

The ILRS is led by China. It has taken the lead in signing an MOU on cooperation in the construction of the ILRS with Russia in 2021. It also has plans to work with the Asia-Pacific Space Region. This includes the United Arab Emirates, Venezuela, South Africa, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, and other nations and groups.

The ILRS is a major engineering cooperation project that will build scientific experimental facilities on the lunar surface and lunar orbit. It will also carry out multi-disciplinary and multi-target scientific research activities. This includes the exploration and utilization of the moon itself, lunar-based observations, basic scientific experiments, and technical verification. There will also be long-term autonomous operations, with human participation in the future.

    ILRS implementation steps

Wu Weiren, chief designer of China’s lunar exploration project and director of the Deep Space Exploration Laboratory, says the ILRS will be implemented step by step in three phases:

    • Phase 1: This is the planning phase, and it will complete the basic model by 2028. It will carry out lunar environment exploration and resource utilization test verification in this phase.
    • Phase 2: In this phase, there will be a complete model that will be ready before 2040. This model will carry out sun, earth and moon space environment detection and scientific experiments. The Queqiao navigation and remote comprehensive constellation will be built to serve crewed moon landings. It will also serve deep space exploration of Mars, Venus, and other places.
    • Phase 3: At this stage, a lunar scientific research station will be built. It will gradually upgrade from a scientific research test station to a practical and multi-functional lunar base.
Image Source: South China Morning Post

In addition to the three phases above, Li Guoping, chief engineer of the National Space Administration, gave the fourth phase of China’s lunar exploration project. This phase involves deep space exploration and sampling. At the plenary session of the 74th International Astronautical Congress (IAC), China listed the following space exploration missions:

    • Queqiao-2 relay satellite will launch in March 2024
    • Chang’ E-6 to launch in 2024
    • Asteroid sample return Tianwen-2 will launch in 2025
    • Chang’ E-7 to launch in 2026
    • Chang’ E-8 to launch in 2028
    • Mars sampling Tianwen-3 to launch in 2028
    • Jupiter probe Tianwen-4 to launch in 2030
    • China plans to launch a crewed moon landing in 2030

    Conclusion

Pakistan’s MOU with China to join the ILRS project is a significant step towards its involvement in the project. The ILRS project aims to construct a permanent lunar base in the 2030s. Pakistan’s involvement in the Chang’e-6 lunar sample return mission and the ICUBE-Q cubesat for the mission in cooperation with Shanghai Jiaotong University shows its commitment to the project. However, Pakistan and China have been strategic partners in the space sector for three decades. These countries will likely continue to cooperate in the future.

  • How does the Tekken 8 beta minimum PC spec experience hold up?

With Tekken 8 on the horizon and no PlayStation 4 or Xbox One versions for it, some fans are going to have to make the decision to pick up the new consoles or go with the PC.

The closed beta test for Tekken 8 this weekend gave me the opportunity to try out the game for the first time on my PC that barely hits the minimum specs required, and this was my experience.

For clarity, my computer seems to be slightly above the minimum of an Nvidia GTX 1050Ti GPU and AMD 5 1600 CPU with my Nvidia GTX 1650 and AMD 5 3500 with 8 GB of RAM — so my experience is probably a bit better than the true floor of what’s recommended.

Booting up the beta for the first time runs a quick benchmark in the background that automatically put me at low settings across the board for 1080p, which was about what I expected.

At these low settings, Tekken 8 looks pretty fuzzy / like Vaseline was rubbed across the screen during gameplay or the Fight Lounge while menus still appear crisp in detail.

The game kept up a pretty consistent frame rate with a rock solid 60 fps during matches though there were some small dips during loading screens, the character select and intros.

Pretty much all of my online matches felt responsive and lag-free with the exception of one Wi-Fi warrior that upped the delay frames to 5 and slowed everything down to a crawl or a minor hitch here or there.

The Fight Lounge itself I couldn’t get to run more than 40–45 fps no matter the settings, and it was pretty darn blurry at low too.

Doing the minimum is far from ideal for running the game, but it is technically functional.

In my further testing, I was able to bump up the texture quality and post-processing quality to medium with rendering scale up to 70 though anything else would cause frame drops in gameplay.

This made a significant improvement on the visual presentation and readability and just a bit more drops outside of gameplay, so I’d recommend trying those out if you’ve been running all low.

Some long hair on characters like Lili could still look a bit wonky, but Tekken 8 suddenly shows a lot better if you can increase at least a few settings.

Tekken 8 seems to push the CPU a bit harder than the GPU although I never saw either actually maxed out in my performance tests during matches.

I’m not sure what it’s like on an SSD, but with my external USB HDD, it took me two minutes exactly to open the game and get to the main menu.

Bumping up the texture and post-processing quality to medium makes a big difference

Matches took around 40 seconds to load each time as well though the Fight Lounge was really fast at around 5 seconds.

On all settings, I also saw texture loading on the stages and background elements too, but those only lasted like two seconds before the gameplay started.

On the same computer, I feel as though Tekken 8 looks better than Street Fighter 6 did and even runs more consistently at 1080p as well (during gameplay at least).

With all that said, running Tekken 8 at least on medium graphics doesn’t seem like a poor option to experience the game, but if you’re in this lower range, probably not so much.

You’d be best off saving yourself for an upgrade to the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X or higher end PC to get the most out of what Tekken 8 is trying to offer.

If the minimum is your only option for the foreseeable future, however, it does appear to be at least functional and not be a detriment to online performance if tuned correctly.

This is still just the beta as well, so hopefully the full release on January 25, 2024 will be even better optimized to run and look improved on lower hardware too.

To get a closer look, we’ve also included a small gallery featuring three screenshots at the lowest settings and three more with the slightly increased graphics.

  • Mortal Kombat 1 character stats for ECT 2023 reveal most popular picks at first Pro Kompetition event

Even though we all just learned about it not too long ago, the Mortal Kombat Pro Kompetition is already underway with the first offline event this weekend.

Now that the finals are approaching for East Coast Throwdown 2023, we’ve put together the character stats for Mortal Kombat 1 to see which fighters have shown up the most at this pivotal major.

Out of the top 32, Raiden ended up being the most popular of the bunch with six competitors maining him in the upper brackets with Ninjakilla212 and Xombat cracking the top 8 with Mr. Electricity.

That’s followed closely behind by Johnny Cage and Kenshi unsurprisingly with both characters also getting top 8 representation too.

Also in the finals bracket, there’s Rewind’s Reiko, SonicFox’s Rain, and CGL|VideoGamesYo’s Shang Tsung as well.

Ashrah was a pretty popular pick too despite none of her users reaching the top 16.

Conversely, the only place Baraka has shown up with these top competitors is as a secondary for Ninjakilla212, which is a bit surprising.

In all, there were 13 characters represented in the top 16 for MK1 and 16 different mains in top 32 and 19 in total, which isn’t bad for this first outing.

As it stands now, only Kitana, Li Mei, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero haven’t shown up to play this far into the tournament.

  • Google Play Protect now supports real-time detection of third-party apps

Google Play Protect is a built-in, proactive protection against malware and unwanted software. It is enabled on all Android devices with Google Play Services. It scans 125 billion apps daily to help protect users from malware and unwanted software. Recently, Google Play Protect has been enhanced with real-time scanning at the code level to combat novel malicious apps. This new feature will help better protect users against malicious polymorphic apps that leverage various methods, such as AI, to be altered to avoid detection.

In order to further combat malware, Google has optimized the Google Play Protect function. It can now carry out real-time scanning when third-party or sideloaded apps are installed. Simply put, if Google thinks there is a problem with a third-party app you install, it will pop up a malware scanner during installation.

Google Play Protect now offers extra protection

In fact, Google Play Protect is inherently capable of checking whether sideloaded apps contain malware code. It also uses a very fast detection technique, such as definition files, often quietly in the background. As you can see from the screenshot below, Google only provides two options: “Scan App” and “Cancel Install App”. There is no such option as “Skip Scan”, although it may be hidden in “More Details”. But there is no mention of it in the Google blog. Thus, it is safe to say that this option does not exist, at least for now.

Google said that this enhanced feature of Google Play Protect has begun to be launched in some selected countries and regions. According to the company, the first stop for this update is India. The update is now rolling out to all Android devices in this region.

Google has not released security data about sideloading for a long time. The last time it was released was in 2018. Google’s annual security report showed that 0.04% of all apps downloaded from the Google Play Store were “PHA ”(Potentially Unwanted Applications), and “Outside Google Play” sources at 0.92%.

    What is Google Play Protect?

Google Play Protect is a malware protection and detection service built into Android devices that use Google Mobile Services. It helps protect mobile devices by scanning for malicious apps on Android devices and removing any potentially harmful software. It also warns users about apps that violate the Unwanted Software Policy by hiding or misrepresenting important information. Apps are automatically checked when installed and are periodically scanned in the background. Users can also initiate a scan directly. Google Play Protect is found on a device by opening the Play Store and selecting “My Apps & Games.”

    Gizchina News of the week

    Real-time Scanning at the Code-level

Google Play Protect now recommends a real-time app scan when installing apps that have never been scanned before to help detect emerging threats. Real-time scanning of sideloaded apps at the time of installation is a new technique that Google is using to detect malware. This technique will delay app installation with a full-screen “scanning” interface while Google runs a deep scan of the app code. The scan will involve sending bits and pieces of the app to Google for analysis.

The scan will extract important signals from the app and send them to the Play Protect backend infrastructure for a code-level evaluation. Once the real-time analysis is complete, users will get a result letting them know if the app looks safe to install or if the scan determines the app is potentially harmful.

    How Google Play Protect Works

Google Play Protect checks apps when users install them and periodically scans their devices. If it finds a potentially harmful app, it can take certain actions. These include sending a warning, preventing an app install, or disabling the app automatically. It also offers protection for apps that are installed from sources outside of Google Play. It checks users’ devices for potentially harmful apps regardless of the install source, whether they are online or offline.

Google Play Protect leverages cloud-based app-verification services to determine if apps are Potentially Harmful Apps (PHAs). Google Play Protect scans Android devices for evidence of PHAs. Daily PHA scans allow Google Play Protect to respond quickly to a detected threat. This also reduces how long users could be exposed to the threat and how many devices may be affected.

    Additional Security Features

Along with malware detection, Google Play Protect offers other key security features. The Find My Device tool displays the location of an Android device. It can lock devices, sign users out of their Google account, or wipe devices completely. Its safe browsing feature monitors web browsing through a device’s Chrome browser to identify malicious activity from websites. When it detects a site exhibiting unsound web practices, it warns users about proceeding to the site. It can also send users privacy alerts if apps that can access personal data through user permissions are detected. The service can also reset app permissions for privacy protection reasons.

    Conclusion

Google Play Protect is a powerful tool that helps protect Android users from malware and unwanted software. With the recent addition of real-time scanning at the code level, Google Play Protect is now even more powerful at detecting emerging threats. Users can check their device’s security status and start a full-device scan at any time to ensure their device is protected. What do you think about the new security layer added by Google to scan third-party apps in real-time? Do you think this feature will be useful to users? The updated version of Tesla’s Model 3, dubbed “Project Highland,” has been spotted roaming around Germany and France in the last two days. • Phenom showcases his newest tier list for Street Fighter 6

00|Phenom has released a new tier list for Street Fighter 6. 19 different characters have been divided up into one of five different categories — S, S-. A+, A, and A- tier.

Though A.K.I. is the newest character made playable in Street Fighter 6, Phenom did not place her on this tier list likely due to how new she is. However, it seems that Phenom has had enough time to determine where Rashid belongs in the overall meta.

The best characters in the game according to Phenom are JP, Luke, Ken, Chun-Li, and Dee Jay, in that order. It’s worth mentioning that Phenom himself is a Ken user in Street Fighter 6.

Rashid has been placed in the S- tier group, which seems to line up with RB|Gachikun very recently winning Capcom Pro Tour 2023 Singapore Offline. Other fighters found in this tier group are Guile, Blanka, Marisa, Cammy, and Juri.

Not surprisingly, Zangief was rated as being the weakest overall combatant as he has been positioned in the lowest possible tier category on Phenom’s list. Needless to say, Zangief is often believed to be the character that’s currently the hardest to win with in Street Fighter 6.
