Scientists have created a new battery that lasts much longer than current ones. After 10,000 charging cycles, it still had 99% of its original capacity. It also stayed over 99% efficient. Lithium-ion batteries are slightly better in efficiency, but they cannot match this battery’s stability and durability.
A Safer and Stronger Battery
This battery is also very safe. Researchers tested it by puncturing it, short-circuiting it, and heating it up to 1,000°C. It did not leak, catch fire, or explode. Even at 200°C, it kept the same voltage as at room temperature. This makes it much safer than many other batteries.
The battery is an aluminum-ion type. It uses a liquid electrolyte made of aluminum chloride. Normally, this substance causes corrosion and damages the battery. Scientists solved this by adding aluminum fluoride and coating the electrode with a special salt. This turned the battery into a solid-state system. It stopped corrosion and made the battery last much longer.
Researchers from Peking University and the Beijing Institute of Technology also said the battery is easy to recycle. They can wash out the aluminum fluoride and reuse almost all of it in new batteries. Aluminum itself is also highly recyclable.
Not Ideal for Phones and Laptops
This battery has one big drawback. It has a lower energy density than lithium-ion batteries. It stores about 150 watt-hours per kilogram. This is three to five times less than current lithium-ion and solid-state batteries.
Because of this, it may not work well for mobile devices like phones or laptops. But it could be useful for stationary uses, like storing energy for homes and businesses. Companies still need to figure out if they can make these batteries on a large scale. But its safety, long life, and recyclability make it a very exciting discovery.
