  • Man arrested for selling adulterated cooking oil in Abuja

Vigilantes operating in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have arrested a man accused of adulterating cooking oil and selling it to the public.

The commander of the VGN in the area, John Samuel, said the suspect, identified as Peter Amos, was arrested on Friday night at the Tipper garage area in Kabusa district, where he resides and also used to carry out the nefarious act.

In a confessional statement in a video obtained by Daily Trust on Sunday, April 20, the suspect was seen narrating how he packaged the fake cooking oil in the five-litre gallons that had been filled with water, to which he added a little quantity of cooking oil.

“I sell one gallon at the rate of N10,000 or less than that amount in some instances,” the suspect said.

He also claimed that he used to learn mechanic work in the past before he quit the business, and resorted to the fraudulent venture.

He promised to produce the other person who worked with him in the fraudulent act.

The vigilante commander said the arrest of the suspect came after complaints by some residents, who accused him of cheating them through a fraudulent act.

The commander said he had since been handed over to the police in the area for further investigation.

The police in the area confirmed the arrest but declined further comment.

  • Daughter convicted of stabbing parents, 1 fatally, after being told she’d have to move out

MARION COUNTY, Fla. (TCN) — A 33-year-old woman will spend the rest of her life behind bars for fatally stabbing her father and attempting to kill her mother after being told to move out.

The Fifth Judicial Circuit State Attorney’s Office announced that on April 16, a jury found Christina Adams guilty of first-degree premeditated murder and attempted first-degree murder with a deadly weapon. A judge subsequently sentenced Adams to two life sentences for the murder of 74-year-old Richard Langer and the attempted murder of another victim, identified by the Miami Herald as the defendant’s mother.

According to prosecutors, on Sept. 16, 2022, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office responded to a possible stabbing at a home in Ocala and found the victims with stab wounds. As responders rendered aid, Langer told authorities that his daughter had stabbed them. Law enforcement issued an alert bulletin, and officials performed a traffic stop on Adams’ vehicle. Adams’ wife was also in the car at the time.

Investigators took Adams and her wife into custody for questioning. The spouse reportedly said she had finished errands and then met her wife at the grocery store. Adams’ wife also allegedly said she “did not notice anything out of the norm for the defendant, nor did the defendant mention any altercation prior.”

The state attorney’s office said Adams’ statement was not consistent with her wife’s. The defendant eventually admitted that she “attacked both victims after getting upset for being told she’d have to move out.”

According to the Miami Herald, Adams was living in a converted studio apartment on her parents’ property. Her father allegedly told her to move out so her other sibling could move in. On the morning of the stabbing, Adams reportedly went to the main house to do laundry, and her father told her she needed to move out by the next day.

Adams allegedly went back into her apartment, put on gloves and shoe covers, and retrieved a “Taser pen” and knife. Adams reportedly said she went back into the main house, shocked her father with the Taser pen, then stabbed him in the arm. Her mother allegedly heard the commotion and went into the room to check on the situation. Then, Adams stabbed her in the chest.

Adams purportedly claimed she then stabbed her father in the chest multiple times and assumed both her parents were dead. Adams allegedly washed the clothes she was wearing and cleaned the knife with bleach before going to the grocery store to meet her wife.

The Miami Herald reports that Langer called 911 to report the stabbing and said his wife was “fading fast.” The couple was transported to the hospital, where they underwent surgery. Langer died from his injuries two days later.

Langer was reportedly a veteran and pilot and leaves behind nine children.

In a statement, Fifth Judicial Circuit Chief Assistant State Attorney Walter Forgie said, “Our fundamental duty is to seek justice, and in pursuing this goal, we strive to provide closure for the victims and their families while ensuring accountability for those responsible. Today, as difficult as it has been for the victims and their families, I believe we’ve gotten just that.”

  • Northern CAN Mourns Pope Francis, Calls For National Rebirth

The Christian Association of Nigeria in the 19 Northern states and Abuja has mourned the passing of Pope Francis, describing him as a spiritual father and global voice of conscience.

In a press statement signed by Rev. Dr Yakubu Pam, Chairman of Northern CAN, on Monday, the organisation called on Nigerians to reflect on the country’s moral direction and the need for national rebirth.

“Pope Francis lived out this calling through his relentless pursuit of compassion for the poor, dialogue among nations, and reconciliation among peoples.

“His passing during this season invites us as a nation to pause and reflect on our moral direction and the need for national rebirth,” Pam said.

The statement noted that the timing of Pope Francis’ passing during the Easter season is profoundly symbolic, calling for renewal and a new dawn for Nigeria.

“Easter is a season of renewal—a call to rise above pain and darkness into a new dawn,” he said.

CAN also condemned the ongoing insecurity, violence, and terrorism in several states, including Plateau, Benue, and Borno.

“The bloodshed, displacement, and destruction of communities are not just tragic—they are unacceptable,” Pam said. “We must not allow these challenges to become a new normal.”

The Christian organisation called on the federal government, state governors, security agencies, traditional rulers, and religious leaders to renew their commitment to protecting lives and restoring peace across Nigeria.

“The urgency of the situation demands unified action, genuine political will, and a return to justice and accountability at all levels of leadership,” Pam said.

CAN emphasised the need for unity among Christians, Muslims, and people of all faiths and backgrounds to heal the nation and restore the dignity of every Nigerian citizen.

“Let the memory and legacy of Pope Francis inspire us to reject indifference and apathy. Let us rise together—Christians, Muslims, and people of all faiths and backgrounds—to heal our land and restore the dignity of every Nigerian citizen,” Pam said.

The statement concluded by praying for the Catholic Church, the global Christian family, and Nigeria, and calling for a new determination to build a just, secure, and united Nigeria.

“May the passing of this great servant of God awaken in us a new determination to build a just, secure, and united Nigeria,” Pam said.

THE WHISTLER reports that only recently, a crisis engulfed the association over tenure elongation.

At the centre of the crisis is the tenure of Rev. Yakubu Pam, whose term as chairman allegedly expired over two years ago.

The crisis took a turn for the worse when Rev. Hayab’s group conducted an election, appointing him as the new chairman, while Rev. Pam’s faction has denounced the move, describing it as a “religious coup” and “fraudulent”.

  • Person found on ‘elevated surface’ inside Trump Tower in New York is arrested, police say

NEW YORK (AP) — Police arrested a 30-year-old person inside Trump Tower on Monday after getting a report of a disorderly person on an “elevated surface” inside the building, authorities said.

New York City Police responded at around 4:30 p.m. to the skyscraper where President Donald Trump keeps a penthouse. The tower also houses private condominiums, restaurants, shops, and a soaring public atrium that is open to tourists.

Independent journalists on the scene posted video of security officials evacuating people from the atrium and police officers later exiting the building. The officers were wearing helmets and safety harnesses of the kind used by emergency responders who specialize in rescuing people from high places.

The NYPD’s emergency service unit took the person into custody without further incident, police said. It wasn’t immediately clear what charges the person might face and the incident remains under investigation, police said.

Trump Tower has been the scene, over the years, of protests, bomb scares and the occasional stunt. A person tried to scale the building in 2016 and got to the 21st floor before officers dragged him in.

  • In final testament, pope asks for simple burial, prayed for peace

In his brief final testament, Pope Francis asked to be buried at Rome’s Basilica of St. Mary Major and said he had offered his suffering for peace in the world.

“I offered the suffering present in the latter part of my life to the Lord for world peace and brotherhood among peoples,” he wrote in the document dated June 29, 2022, and published by the Vatican April 21, hours after he had died.

“Feeling that the sunset of my earthly life is approaching and with lively hope in eternal life, I wish to express my testamentary will only as to the place of my burial,” he wrote.

The document made no mention of the disposition of any possessions or of his personal papers.

As he had said publicly on several occasions, Pope Francis asked to be buried at St. Mary Major because he had entrusted his “priestly and episcopal life and ministry” to Mary.

“I wish my last earthly journey to end at this very ancient Marian shrine where I would go to pray at the beginning and end of each apostolic journey to confidently entrust my intentions to the Immaculate Mother and to thank her for the docile and maternal care,” he wrote.

Pope Francis then specified that “my tomb be prepared in the niche in the side aisle between the Pauline Chapel — the Chapel of the Salus Populi Romani — and the Sforza Chapel.”

“The tomb should be in the earth; simple, without special decoration and with the only inscription: Franciscus,” he wrote.

Pope Francis said a benefactor already had covered the expenses for his burial and that he already had given specific instructions to Cardinal Rolandas Makrickas, the coadjutor archpriest of the basilica.

“May the Lord give a well-deserved reward to those who have loved me and will continue to pray for me,” he wrote.
