  • The Problem Of Being As A Fundamental Problem Of Philosophy

    INTRODUCTION
    What is being? How do
    we know being? Perhaps to reflect on the above question is the first place to
    start in writing a paper of this foundational nature and rudimentary scope.
    Something must be meant by “being” which is more than one of a humanocentric
    and linguistic construct. The question on the nature of Being is one that forms
    the debate of ancient western history of philosophy as philosophers within this
    epoch strove to explicate what they consider as Being.
    However curiosity
    drives us further to ask, what does it really mean to call something a Being?
    And which things should we credit as having the most fundamental nature of
    beingness? Some philosophers have argued that the concept ‘Being’ is synonymous
    to Reality or existence. To this question, the empiricist and rationalist
    philosophers remain at loggerheads.
    The problem of Being or
    reality is traceable to Parmenides of Elea. He was the chief proponent of ‘being’
    as a concept. According to him, ‘Being is and non being is not’. Parmenides
    conceives Being as permanence. The concept of being is therefore what forms the
    foci of metaphysics as it refers to that branch of philosophy that studies the
    concept,nature and scope of Being (reality) in its intrinsic, basic, essential
    and holistic nature. If according to Parmenides, ‘being is and non being is
    not’, why then do we have changes in Being as there appears to be different
    modes or phases of Being to which Heraclitus alluded to when he conceived his
    notion of the “Omnia flux” which means that ‘all things are in a perpetual
    state of flux’.
    The problem of being
    therefore became a fundamental problem of philosophy because there appears to
    be no consensus as par its semantic interpretation since different philosophers
    hold variant views as to what they consider to be being. This is because they
    tend to represent different schools of thought. 
    We shall therefore
    reflect on the different views of philosophers on the notion of being. To
    achieve this, it is pertinent that we first and foremost understand that the
    notion of being is synonymous with reality as both refer to different ways of
    talking about the same thing.
    According to Thales who
    is popularly known as the father of western philosophy, being or reality is
    water. Anaximander, a student of Thales of Miletus saw being as the “ape iron”
    which according to him is the indeterminate boundless and infinite. Anaximenes
    conceives being as Air. For Pythagoras, being or reality is ‘number’ as “all
    things are numbers, they are measurable and do also possess a numerical basis”.
    For Parmenides, being is the primordial stuff of the universe. Heraclitus on the
    contrary posited the “Omnia flux” which affirms the changeability of being. We
    could go on and on as the list is endless.
    Taking a leap into the
    thesis that informs this paper, we therefore propose that the basic problem of
    being as reflected in the philosophies of Parmenides and Heraclitus is that of
    trying to understand reality and why there are changes amidst permanence and
    vice versa. If according to Parmenides, being is permanent, why then do we have
    changes, transpositions, or transmutations in being or reality as in the
    example when someone dies? Critical minded philosophers would ask Parmenides:
    why do people die rather than have a continuum in their existence?
    For a philosopher like
    Heraclitus, who conceived the notion of an ‘Omnia flux’ with his most popular
    dictum hinging on the notion that “we cannot step into the same river twice, as
    fresh water is ever flowing” we could argue thus: if according to Heraclitus
    reality is transient, an ephemeral why then do we have “permanent” human
    existence as against the theory of evolution which Charles Darwin in his “origin of species” attempts to justify
    by stating that complex multicellular organisms originates from single celled
    organism. For example that the Homo sapiens (Man) originate from monkeys and
    other forms of primates. The argument against this theory is that why haven’t
    these homo sapiens metamorphosed into some other kind of specie of being?
    Another problem with
    the notion of being is that conceived by empiricist philosophers of the modern
    period of philosophy, according to them, reality or being refers to those
    things to which we can know through sense experience. To advocates of this
    school of thought, reality can only be verified through the senses of sight,
    smell, taste, touch and feeling.we therefore ask: what do we say about such
    abstract entities like the mind, death, pain, heat e.t.c to which we cannot
    doubt their existence even if we try to shy away  despite they cannot be known through sense
    data as they also do have an interconnected influence on us.

    To throw in the towel,
    I wish to toe the line of the skeptic philosophers that we cannot truly know
    being reason is that each time we attempt to grasp being in its intrinsic
    nature, it however eludes us and all that we seem to have left becomes a mere
    fragmentation of being. It is from the foregoing that we conclude with the
    position that the problem of being is a perennial problem in philosophy and it
    will continue to be a philosophical problem.

  • Attitudial Change: a Catalyst To National Development

    I consider it apposite to begin this
    piece of writing by asserting unequivocally that Nigeria today is being
    confronted with some destabilizing problems as it regards its economic and
    socio-political development. This seemingly supposed problem is to my mind due
    to the ambivalent nature of man which according to professor Asouzu “… tends
    toward self-preservation”. Such deterrent to the development of our nation is a
    product of myopic view of reality and egocentric tendencies which Asouzu
    purported is quite impelling as it has resulted in conflict, tribalism, nepotism,
    sentiment, vandalization and all forms of decadence ( Ibuanyindanda 231-233).
    It was on the above premise that Rev Chris Okotie did inform in an interview
    over the media that “there cannot be a new Nigeria if there are no new
    Nigerians”.
                It
    is therefore the aim of this paper to argue for a mental deconstruction,
    reconstruction and transformation otherwise known as ‘attitudinal change’ which
    is closely linked to Asouzu’s noetic propaedeutic. This is what will result
    into the progressive development of our nation as it refers to all its vital
    sectors such as economic, social, political, industry, etc. we shall therefore
    in subsequent paragraphs discuss some problems facing the Nigerian nation to
    which attitudinal change could serve as a therapy.
                First,
    is the issue of tribal sentiment amongst various ethnic groups which have
    resulted into crisis between individual rival groups. A nation where such is
    rampant can seldom progress. If indeed we desire for national development which
    is replicated in economic planning through the diversification of the various
    economic sectors, budget surplus, high calorie intake, and availability of
    basic and social amenities such as good roads, electricity, pipe borne water,
    infrastructure etcetera. Individual orientation towards one another must change
    for the betterment of this country.
                Also,
    is the lack of love and concern for the youths who are supposed to be leaders
    of tomorrow. The youths of this country have been neglected, rejected, and
    deprived of the right to a fair hearing. They have no say in economic and
    socio- political matters, not because they are not vast nor is it because they
    lack the potentialities and capability to contribute positively towards her
    nation but   rather because their
    supposed leaders in the corridors of power do not consider them as objects of
    change. Unfortunately, this negative tag on them have led most of them to take
    up unprofitable venture such as hooliganism, robbery, human trafficking, as
    commercial sex workers and other moral decadence.
         
    Another factor that cripples national development is that perpetrated towards
    the vandalization of oil pipelines. The Niger-Delta issue is today an open secret,
    as many Nigerians seems ill-concerned about ways to contribute to the good of
    this nation and the progress of various sectors of the economy of which the oil
    and agricultural sectors appear most important as they appear to be our major
    sources of revenue.
                Another
    problem which has deterred national development In Nigeria is the problem of
    incessant and illicit possession and display of wealth. So many politicians are
    corrupt because they seek to possess material wealth to which they have gotten by
    false means. A good percentage of politicians who occupy sensitive positions in
    the corridor of power apparently seem to have ill-gotten wealth. Each of these
    leaders goes into power with the intention toamass wealth through falsehood
    applauded by theMachiavellian principle of “the end justifying the means”
    thereby failing to understand in the light of the Ibuanyindanda framework that
    “whatever exist serves a missing link of reality” as posited by asouzu.
                Other
    issues that could serve as bottlenecks toward the development of our country,
    Nigeria include: armed robbery activities, inequality in wealth allocation and
    distribution, bad government policies such as deregulation of the oil sector,
    lack of basic and social amenities, inflation, budget deficit, infant
    mortality, early pregnancies, over population etc. All these have led to
    economic recession and destabilization, thus these are the problems Nigeria is
    faced with today.
                Conclusively,
    to curb this entire negative trend which has bedeviled our country, we have
    suggested mental reformation and transformation which is couched as attitudinal
    change or noetic propaedeutic. This will restore the public lost love for the
    nation Nigeria that will make every individual contribute positively and
    consciously towards the fostering of this nation. There is something to be done
    for Nigeria! It was the late president of the United States of America in the
    person of John. F. Kennedy who told his people “Do not ask what America will do
    for you, but rather what you can and will do for America”.  The above assertion focuses on the vital
    issue of patriotism, a concept that relates to a people’s favorable attitude
    toward their motherland. In a nutshell, patriotism must be regained by
    Nigerians and that through a change of attitude of the people to what we know
    as positive which seeks for the “oughtness” towards experiencinga sustainable economic
    and socio-political development.

    I am very confident that you will provide the needed leadership to turn this country around. I have no doubt that you will work with dedicated and qualified Nigerians to protect our citizens, improve our economy, create jobs, improve education, reform governance and fight corruption. You will indeed bring the change Nigerians have been yearning for. Once more, congratulations.
    I congratulate the other contestants, namely Governors Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Rochas Okorocha as well as the erudite Sam Nda-Isiah. You have all demonstrated your commitment to democracy by participating in this transparent process and by campaigning vigorously across this country.
    I thank our delegates for their sacrifices and their commitment to democracy. In particular, I thank those who voted for me for your faith in me. However, since we came up short, have to now rally behind General Buhari to help him prevail in the coming Presidential election.
    The APC has demonstrated, through the transparent process, the Party’s commitment to democracy and rule of law. It has demonstrated its respect for people and their choice through the ballot box.
    I sincerely thank the Convention Committee for putting together a hitch-free convention.
    My dear friends, we have voted, a winner has emerged. I pledge my commitment to this Party, and to campaign vigorously for our candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari and all APC candidates to ensure victory in the 2015 elections.

  • Quality Leadership In Kano State Governor -Kwankwaso

      Its been asserted
    by many that the best form of leadership Is leading by example. You cannot be
    saying one thing but doing another. During the APC 2014 convention of wed.,10 December
    while the presidential primaries were on going a bomb blast occurred at the
    kano textile market claiming, as at the time, the lives of about five Nigerians
    and inflicting injuries on many.
      Whereas the
    Governor, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, being a contender for the APC presidential slot
    was at the venue of the primary election. But on being tipped about the news of
    the bomb blast zoomed off to kano while still contending in the primaries. He demonstrated
    leadership by prioritizing the security of his state over his political
    ambition at the APC primaries.

      Nigerians need more
    of such selfless politicians.
  • Corps Members Assaulted By Students In Cross River State

      
              A  corp member serving in Army Day Secondary
    school Ebrutu Barracks Calabar Cross River State was on Thursday 13th
    of December beaten up by students while carrying out an exams invigilator.

         The SS2 student had in anger ganged up and
    beaten the batch B corp member for not allowing them to cheat in the exams
    leaving him with bruises on his face. The other corp members serving in the
    school had showed their displeasure as the school authorities did not take any
    disciplinary action to curb the excesses of the students. The soldiers who
    tried to come in and restore order were denied entrance into the school primes.
    One of the corp members speaking to our correspondence disclosed that there has
    been previous incidents of assault and they have been advised to take matters
    into their hands.
