  • POLITICS: Obama Endorses Buhari!

    By Efio-Ita Nyok

In the contemporary world where globalisation is becoming the in-thing, it becomes reasonable that the activities of a group of people, state, corporate organisation, institution should interest or even affect the other irrespective of the distance, prevailing ideology, culture, etc. It is in this context that the world is described by some as a ‘global village’.

However, in view of the fact that the trend of Americanisation, where American political, economic and cultural values are imposed on other sovereign states unilaterally in a one-way traffic, is the norm; as Nigeria decides who becomes the next president come March 22 America has been seen to want to foster their hegemonic interest in the usual spirit of perceiving themselves to be ‘the world’s police’. We could see this demonstrated when John Kerry, the Secretary of State, was seen to condemn the postponement of the February 14 general elections.

Besides, the White House is seen to go further by ‘donating’ AKPD, the political campaign firm that saw Obama to the presidency in 2008  and 2012 to Nigeria’s main opposition party, the All Progressive Congress APC. This move by the White House is reported to introduce a measure of frostiness in the diplomatic relationship between Aso Rock and the White House, and is perceived to be an obvious endorsement of Buhari, the presidential candidate of the APC.

In the main, AKPD is said to be denying any form of relationship with the APC. However, email messages exchange between AKPD and the leadership of the APC including that of both the presidential and vice-presidential candidates of the said party suggest otherwise. However, Lai Mohammed, the spokeperson of the APC is said to have affirmed the latter.

It is believed that America’s meddling in Nigeria’s domestic affairs is not to the best interest of Nigeria. At least, it is a truism that America does not have any permanent friend or foe except permanent interest. For instance, in the international scene, America is now ready to cooperate with Bashar Al-Assad of Syria despite the conviction to the contrary previously. What this interest is in Nigeria’s present political dispensation, is still covert. Whatever it may be, it is the prayers of some that America should respect Nigeria’s territorial integrity. America, to the mind of the author has never supported any state to their overall best interest. If there are, I am not aware.

God bless Nigeria! God bless this Nigeria!

  • QUOTE: " If You Want To Go Fast, Go Alone. If You Want to Go Far, Go Together"

Working alone can be good since one can can get something done quickly. But the question is: how far can one go working alone? Going far requires the support of others to let you know when you are going going the wrong way, to lift you when you fall, to encourage you when you are despair, and to stand in for you when you are worn out. Its better to go far than go fast!
    African proverb.

  • LOVE POEM: Agape

    By Nelson Osuala
    If kisses were water,
I will give you the sea.
    If hugs were leaves,
    I will give the forest.
    If friendship was life,
    I will give you mine.
    Quite simply, I love you.
    This is Family Week.
Post this message to your family and friends and me.
    If 3 come back…you’re adorable,
    5 means you’re loved.
    I LOVE YOU…
    Distance makes me miss you.
I may not always stay in touch but I care about you very much.
I may not always stop by to say hi,
but I hope to never have to say goodbye.
I may not prove to be the perfect family
OR friend but I hope the friendship we share never reaches an end.
Send to people who mean the galaxy to you, I just did.
    I want this poem back.
You are my family till the end.
Now let’s see if you can get ten.

    By Dickson Blessing
President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in the media chat held today stated that ”elections will be conducted in this country and the government will be inaugurated on May 29th of this year.
The president also responded when asked about his confidence on the INEC chairman Attahiru Jega “if I feel that Jega is not good enough, for obvious reasons, then I can by provisions in the Constitution that gives the person who appoints the power to remove, and I’ve not told anybody I’m going to remove Jega. This however contradicts the previous rumours of the chairman being threatened out of office.
He also assured that the issue of the Chibok girls would get better and that the state of insecurity in the north eastern part of Nigeria is being taken seriously and that election could not be held this week because of the safety of the public.

  • QUOTES OF THE DAY: "If You Fear Something, You Give It Power Over You"

Fear is a negative force that has the capacity to cause or create action or reactions. It is nothing we should underestimate because of the destructive tendencies. There is a sage that says the only thing we must fear is fear itself. Fear is as powerful as we allow it. Thus the way to manage it is by facts and information fact fully handled. (F.A.I.T.H). Faith is a firm belief based on would or superior evidence.
Confront your fear with knowledge. This will rob fear of its power instead of fear robbing you of power.

  • TECHNOLOGY: Mircosoft Fixes Flaws Used By Chinese Hackers

Microsoft has released a patch to close a bug exploited by hackers, whose aim was at U.S military and government networks.

The flaw was used to compromise Windows PCs that visited sites seeded with other malware created by the group.

Popular news site Forbes was one victim unwittingly enrolled into the cyber-espionage campaign.

Security systems on US military networks ultimately foiled attempts to steal data, said one expert.

“It's fairly brazen for a Chinese cyber-espionage group to use such a public site,” said John Hultquist from iSight Partners, which said it had traced the attack back to a group called Codoso.

    Data grabbing

Forbes' site was compromised via a software add-on, or widget, that made use of a version of Adobe's Flash software, which in turn was vulnerable to an exploit believed to have been created by Codoso.

This was paired with a separate vulnerability that the hackers used to takeover Windows machines.

The booby-trapped widget was present on the Forbes site between 28 November and 1 December, 2014, said a spokeswoman for the news site.

“Forbes took immediate actions to remediate the incident,” said the spokeswoman.

“The investigation has found no indication of additional or ongoing compromise nor any evidence of data exfiltration.”

No group had claimed responsibility for the attack, she added.

According to Mr Hultquist, he mentioned that the iSight had been tracking Codoso since 2010 and was confident it was behind the attack.

Additional intelligence about its origin has been provided by security company Invincea which spotted machines infected via the Forbes exploit on military networks.

Once it took hold on a Windows machine the Codoso malware sought to log what software the machine ran and to map networks to find other machines to compromise, Mr Hultquist explained

“It's all about land and expand,” he said.

“They want to get in and stay in and be as persistent as possible and gather intelligence over a long period of time.”

No data was stolen from official US networks using this exploit, said Norm Laudermilch from Invincea.

However, he said, analysis of the malware showed that it had been used to get at various other sites and the sheer number of people visiting Forbes would suggest a lot had been caught out by it.

Adobe patched the Flash bug on 9 December and Microsoft has now moved to close the other loophole found and exploited by Codoso.

Mr Hultquist said the evidence suggested Codoso was no common-or-garden cybercrime group.

“There are different motivations for hacker groups, but this one is about espionage and that, by definition, is not about making money,” he said.

China was not alone in setting up such groups and trying to gather data by hacking, he added.

“We've seen dozens of them,” he said.

“It's a very inexpensive way to get an advantage over your adversaries.”
