Apple is reportedly preparing for a major redesign of its upcoming iPhone 17 Pro models, according to a series of leaks and supply chain insights. Late last month, a report by The Information revealed that the rear design of the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max will feature a rectangular camera bump made of aluminum, replacing the traditional 3D glass design. The bottom half of the device is expected to remain made of glass to support wireless charging. Additionally, the iPhone 17 Air, another rumored model, may include a large, centered camera bump with a single camera.
Concept Renders and Supply Chain Confirmation
Concept renders based on the initial leaks have been circulating online, showcasing the rumored elongated oval-shaped camera module. These designs gained further credibility this morning when Digital Chat Station, a reliable Weibo-based leaker with a track record of revealing camera technology details, claimed that supply chain materials support this design change.
“The details of the camera arrangement remain unclear,” the leaker noted, “but the module is indeed of this elongated oval shape. Interestingly, many Android phones expected next year are likely to adopt a similar design approach.”
If true, this redesign would mark the most significant change to Apple’s iconic square camera bump since it was introduced in September 2019 with the iPhone 11. The iPhone 11’s square camera module was a departure from the vertical layout of earlier models, introduced to accommodate a third Ultra Wide lens along with improved sensors. This design set a new standard, influencing subsequent iPhone releases through to the current iPhone 16.
A Major Overhaul or Risky Move?
Commenting on the rumor, Ice Universe, another prominent Weibo-based leaker, highlighted the engineering challenges of such a redesign. “An external change of this magnitude would require a complete internal structural overhaul, much like redesigning the layout of an old house,” they said. “It would involve significant time and effort for validation. The question remains—would Apple take such an aggressive design approach?”
While the rumored redesign could enhance both aesthetics and functionality, it also raises questions about compatibility with accessories and consumer reception. Apple has historically been cautious about such major shifts, balancing innovation with practicality.
Inspired by Android Designs?
Interestingly, this redesign seems to echo elements of Google Pixel’s camera layout, signaling a potential shift in design philosophy. The rumored changes also align with broader industry trends, as Android manufacturers experiment with new camera configurations.
Speculation or Reality?
As with any leaks, these rumors are based on preliminary information, and Apple’s plans could evolve. The company has not confirmed these changes, and the final design of the iPhone 17 Pro series may differ from the concept renders.
What remains clear is that Apple is exploring significant design upgrades for its iPhone lineup, which could redefine its aesthetic and functional standards. What do you think about the potential redesign? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
