The whole of DC fandom is pretty hyped up about the upcoming DCU under James Gunn and Peter Safran. Honestly, we did see a Superman reboot coming from a mile away even before James Gunn announced it. However, none of us expected the DCU to begin its journey with a team of underdogs. DC is coming with a new animated series called Creature Commandos, bringing the team of military Superhumans first introduced in Weird War Tales #93 (November 1980) to life.
I am pretty sure that many of you are not very much aware of who Creature Commandos are, where they come from, or much about the upcoming series. In this article, find out all about the upcoming DC Creature Commandos animated series and some extra info about the metahuman team.
Creature Commandos Release Date
The Creature Commandos release date is not yet revealed, but we do know that it will be released on HBO Max in 2024. We can expect it to arrive in mid-2024 and according to Gunn, this series will be the first thing to come out of the brand-new DCU he has created.
He also stated that when the Creature Commandos make their live-action debut, the voice actors will be playing the live-action roles as well.
Who are Creature Commandos?
Creature Commandos are a group of soldiers who were given superhuman abilities during World War 2. Their origin story is based in 1941 when America’s involvement in World War 2 was inevitable. The US government brought together all the divisions of the armed forces to work on psychological warfare against the Germans and called it Project M.
Professor Mezersky, one of the head scientists of Project M, realized that psychologically all humans have an inherent fear of things that appear to be human but are not human. They all fear images of ghoulish, ghastly monsters. Taking inspiration from this realization, they came up with the idea to create a group of superhuman soldiers that looked frightening to terrorize the Nazis.
Mezersky recruited soldiers who volunteered to take part in this project and to be experimented on. The army officers who volunteered were Warren Griffith, Vincent Velcro, and Elliot Taylor.
They were put in this experiment and turned into horrible and scary superhumans. They resembled a werewolf, a vampire, and a Frankenstein, respectively, and were later joined by a female supersoldier named Doctor Myyra Rhodes. Working under the command of the only human in this group, Lieutenant Matthew Shrieve, this team was given the name Creature Commandos.
Creature Commandos Cast
DCU’s Creature Commandos is going to make a debut as the first superhero team from DC after Zack Snyder’s Justice League. It is going to be the first animated project of James Gunn’s brand new roadmap of DCU.
If we talk about the Creature Commandos cast, the best thing about the new DCU is that the voice actors are going to be the actors who portray their respective characters in live-action as well. The Creature Commandos cast includes:
- Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr
- Sean Gunn as Weasel
- Maria Bakalova plays the role of Princess Ilana Rostovic
- Indira Varma as The Bride
- Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky
- Alan Tudyk appears in the role of Dr.Phosphorus
- Steve Agee as John Economos
- David Harbour as G.I. Robot
- Viola Davis as Amanda Waller
Creature Commandos Movie Plot
James Gunn says that the animated series will go into production soon as he has finalized the script for all seven episodes of the series. We don’t really have any concrete information about the plot of Creature Commandos but as far as my speculations go, keeping in mind the way the complete DC universe is being rebooted, this series is going to serve as an origin story.
As far as my speculation goes, this series might be a live-action adaptation of Weird War Tales #93, published in November 1980, the comic where Creature Commandos made their debut.
Whatever the story of Creature Commandos might be, I am pretty sure that this will turn out to be good because DC doesn’t miss when it comes to animated shows and movies. I might be wrong as well, but I’d choose to be positive about it. However, as of now, all we can do is wait for an official announcement of a release date and keep our hopes high!
