This week is the final week for Ruben Amorim in the manager’s seat at Sporting Lisbon, with one of his last games in charge seeing him take on his new club’s sworn rivals, Manchester City.
The two teams are facing off in mid-week action in the Champions League with Manchester City in third and Sporting in eighth, both currently set for seats in the Semi-Finals.
One man with a history with Sporting is Bernardo Silva.
The 30-year-old spent 12 years at Sporting’s rivals, Benfica as a product of their youth academy. It didn’t take long from graduating from the Benfica youth side to be spotted by Monaco, taking him on loan for six months in 2014 before then permanently buying him in 2015.
Now, the midfielder is set to face Amorim in one of his final games for Sorting on the European stage.
Bernardo Silva comments on Ruben Amorim joining Manchester United
Speaking ahead of their Champions League match with Sporting, Silva was asked what he thought about what Ruben Amorim has done at Sporting.
Silva had nothing but praise for Amorim, complimenting the Portuguese manager on how much he has turned things around for the club given the fact they hadn’t won a league title in nearly two decades when he arrived.
It’s only natural that the midfielder went on to address Amorim’s new position, with the pair due to face off in the Premier League. Speaking about Amorim’s move to United, Silva commented: “In terms of him going to Man United, I don’t wish him very well as you can imagine cause he’s going to be my rival.”
He continued: “But he deserves what he got. He deserves to be in one of the best clubs in the world right now because the work that he did in the last years is unbelievable.”
It was clear how much admiration Silva has for Amorim, despite being a rival in two aspects, having played for Sporting’s main rivals, Benfica, and currently playing for City, set to face the manager in the Manchester Derbies.
However, these compliments despite the rivalry are a testament to the work that Amorim has done to earn him the hot seat at Old Trafford.
