When we talk about Marvel movies, one of the most loved characters in the entire franchise is Thor, the God of Thunder. He has appeared in four solo projects and five Avengers movies so far and for all good reasons, he is rightfully known to be the most powerful Avenger. So, if you are a fan of Thor or are someone who wants to make yourself familiar with the massive lore behind the character, here’s how to watch all Thor movies in order.
1. Thor (2011)
The 2011 Thor movie was the debut of Chris Hemsworth in Thor’s role and the rest is history in the making. This movie revolved around Thor Odinson being banished from his Kingdom by Odin, stripped of all his powers and him being deemed unworthy of wielding the Mjölnir. He is sent to Earth where he meets Jane Foster and her team whom he manages to convince that he is the actual Thor from Norse mythology. However, while he is trying to be once again worthy of his hammer, back on Asgard, Loki is plotting to kill him off and take the throne for himself.
2. Avengers (2012)
The release of Avengers in 2012 marked the beginning of one of the best superhero franchises to date which is still going on pretty strong, even after Marvel fumbling a few times in the way. This movie, for the first time, brought all the heroes the Marvel cinematic Universe had introduced till then and some new ones as well.
In this movie, Thor, Captain America, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye come together to stop Loki from taking over the world with his alien army and scepter embedded with the Mind Stone. This movie is also the first time we were introduced to the Infinity Stones and gave a head start to the Infinity Saga in the MCU.
3. Thor: The Dark World (2013)
Thor: The Dark World takes us back to the time when Asgard and Dark Elves went to war with each other. After Asgard stood victorious, Dark Elves’ ultimate weapon, the Aether, was buried in a secret place. After hundreds of years passed by, somehow, Jane Foster managed to find Aether and it fused with her body.
Now, the Dark Elves have come back seeking to claim their long-lost weapon to destroy all nine realms and to protect Jane and extract the weapon from her body. Thor brings her to Asgard but the Dark Elves are not that easy to give up which gives rise to an uneasy alliance between Loki and Thor, giving rise to their further explored relationship as brothers.
4. Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
The next movie where Thor appears is Avengers: Age of Ultron released in 2015. This movie brings us Ultron, an Artificial Intelligence system created by Tony Stark who thinks that humanity is a threat to itself and makes it his mission to wipe them from existence.
This movie is also the first time Vision was introduced to us and also the first time Wanda made her cinematic debut. Age of Ultron is infamous for the way it represented Quicksilver and how he died in easily avoidable circumstances, which contributed to the poor reception this movie received.
5. Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
In my opinion, Thor Ragnarok is the best Thor movie among all the titles featuring him. This movie shows us that Loki has taken the form of his father Odin and has been sitting on the throne of Asgard as an imposter. When Thor finds out about this, he takes Loki to show him where Odin is, and when they find him, Odin is moments away from peacefully moving on to the other side. However, as soon as Odin gets out of the picture, Hela, the first child of Odin shows up and immediately obliterates Thor’s hammer.
The rest of the movie revolves around Thor and Loki getting stuck with the Grandmaster and trying to find their way back to Asgard to prevent Ragnarok, the destruction of Asgard. Thor Ragnarok features some of the best action sequences you will ever witness in a Marvel movie with just the right amount of humor and the natural, brotherly chemistry between Loki and Thor.
6. Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
The second last chapter of the Infinity Saga, Avengers Infinity War features Thor getting a brand new weapon, The Stormbreaker Axe after his Hammer was destroyed. In this movie, we get to see that Thor has lost almost everything dear to him and is out for Thanos’ blood.
Thor does not show up till the very last combat sequence of the movie and wreaks havoc on Thanos’ army. However, when it was time to kill Thanos, he did injure him pretty badly but made one mistake and we all know what happened after that.
7. Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Avengers Endgame was the final chapter of the Infinity Saga and brings us Thor who is extremely depressed and has completely let go of himself when it comes to his physique, ironically becoming a more mythologically accurate Thor. In this movie, we see that Tony Stark figures out a way to travel through time and gather all the Infinity Stones from different parts of time and use them to bring back all the people Thanos had removed by the end of Infinity War.
However, things go south, and even though the Avengers succeed in bringing back all the people, an alternate version of Thanos shows up leading to a legendary final battle leading to one of the most emotional scenes in the entire Avengers franchise, the death of Tony Stark.
8. Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Out of all Thor movies in which he has been a part of the live-action Marvel, Thor Love and Thunder, in my opinion, is the worst adaptation of the character I have ever seen on screen. This movie turned Thor into a comedy and the only good aspect of this movie was the adaptation of Gorr, the God Butcher brought to the screen by none other than Christian Bale.
The plot of this movie was carried out poorly, the costume design was over the top and overall, it was a bad movie in almost every way. However, the only good thing I would say about Thor Love and Thunder is how it introduced us to Hercules who might play the main antagonist in the next Thor movie.
