Year 2 content for Street Fighter 6 confirmed to be in development

After launching over nine months ago, Street Fighter 6’s first year of content is about to wrap up in the near future, and it looks like the developers have no plans on stopping.

Earlier today, they revealed the highly anticipated Akuma teaser trailer for SF6, but that’s not the only announcements for the game they had at the Capcom Highlights showcase.

Following the trailer on stream, SF6 Director Takayuki Nakayama was brought on to talk more about the game and what’s coming next.

“It feels like the year passed by very quickly, said Nakayama. “The development team has been working incredibly hard to continue creating a variety of content, and we’ve been watching all types of players playing the game on a regular basis. A lot has happened in the last year, and it truly has flown by.”

Besides being able to us Akuma in matches, players will be able to encounter him as a master in World Tour – similar to other characters from Year 1. Players can also become Akuma’s students and embark on a variety of new missions. In addition, players will be able to visit his Gokuento stage in World Tour. I hope you’re looking forward to this, but that’s not all.

We’re also adding some sound-related features, as well as thinking about events for the Battle Hub.”

What he had to say last, however, was probably the most interesting of them all.

“Last but not least, we’re currently working on Year 2 content and hope you’re looking forward to what’s coming next.” – Takayuki Nakayama

“Last but not least, we’re currently working on Year 2 content and hope you’re looking forward to what’s coming next.”

Although everyone presumed it was coming, this is the first confirmation we’ve gotten that Year 2 is indeed happening and in development.

Even with Akuma still not coming out just yet, it makes complete sense that probably only a handful of the development team and testers are working on polishing up the demon before his release.

Meanwhile, most of the rest of Capcom’s fighting game division has more than likely moved on to Year 2 though at what stage they’re at we don’t know.

Given how many months it takes to complete a single character for SF6, however, the roster is almost assuredly chosen and in the production stages already.

The real questions are what exactly will be included in Year 2 and when is it going to drop?

Is Capcom going to stick with only four fighters per year or are they going to expand that out closer to six like they did for much of Street Fighter 5’s life?

With Akuma still scheduled to drop sometime this Spring, Year 2 probably won’t begin until at least this Summer, so we’re looking at June or July at the earliest in all likelihood.

That’ll also presumably mean new World Tour updates, stages and other content being added to SF6 as well though that hasn’t been officially confirmed.

It’s also still not clear if the season 2 balance update will be coming with Akuma’s release or later when Year 2 officially begins.

Capcom will have a lot more to talk about when it comes to the future of Street Fighter 6, but it seems we might we waiting a few more months to get a better picture of who or what is coming in Year 2.
