Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, T-1000, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian were announced to be coming to Mortal Kombat 1 via the Kombat Pack 2. It’s interesting to note that Cyrax, Sektor, and Noob Saibot will all be available together along with the Khaos Reigns story expansion on September 24, 2024.
From watching the trailer, it’s very apparent that the three Mortal Kombat characters have undergone some interesting changes in Liu Kang’s new timeline. In particular, both Cyrax and Sektor are now females.
GameSpot recently had the opportunity to sit down with Ed Boon at San Diego Comic Con to ask him about some of the new announcements. During this interview, Boon gave a brief explanation as to why some of these changes were made.
“We have this kind of balance we’re trying to do with this game,” begun Boon. “It’s like, bring characters back that players want to see, but also don’t just repeat the same things with them.”
Notably, the first iteration of the Mortal Kombat arcade cabinet was released on October 8, 1992. Needless to say, it’s been over 30 years since then, and the story has been retold a number of times.
Just like with the other changes implemented with character backstories in Mortal Kombat 1, this was seemingly done to keep things fresh. Since we’ve heard the same story so many times at this point, Mortal Kombat 1 and the Khaos Reigns expansion aims to do some unexpected things.
“So we give them new origins, new looks… you know, Sektor and Cyrax are now female and so they’re, you know, really dramatic changes from before, but they have the signature moves that players are looking for,” continued Boon.
