Fighting games are like a box of chocolates; you just never know when someone is going to let wake up super rip three times in a row.
In a recent Street Fighter 6 clip shared by Boltstrike on Twitter, the box of chocolates was opened, and what we got was indeed… unexpected. This might be the craziest Street Fighter 6 round we’ve witnessed to-date.
This round footage features Boltstrike’s Zangief taking on an E. Honda player online. The Gief player deems this clip “The single greatest round in SF6 history,” and well, it is certainly… something to behold.
Things begin with Bolt eating one of Honda’s headbutts and being sent into burnout. The sumo continues to pressure the wrestler as they scramble and trade blows, leaving Gief at just a sliver of health remaining while Honda’s health bar is still looking healthy.
To squeak out that last bit of chip damage needed to win the round, the E. Honda player attempts a heavy punch Sumo Headbutt from downtown, and with swift reactions, Boltstrike answers back with Zangief’s level 1 super. Now, because this is an anti-air super and Sumo Headbutt sees Honda as airborne, you’d think that this super should have snatched the sumo out of the sky — but it didn’t.
Instead, Zangief whiffs it completely and goes flying across the stage. After both fighters recover from their respective moves, Honda again goes for the chip out headbutt… and Bolt strikes back with another level 1 super. It whiffs.
One good turn deserves another and another, apparently, and the exact same interaction takes place one more time seeing Zangief whiff yet another level 1 super.
What’s funny here is, this counter to Sumo Headbutt looks like it should work, but it doesn’t (based on all the testing I did). This same super does, though, work against a move like Lily’s OD Condor Spire (even when wind buffed), as long as the timing is tight.
I say all of that to say that Boltstrike did have the right idea, but this counter just doesn’t seem to work on E. Honda.
This also isn’t an isolated incident as Zangief is still seeing level 1 super fails here in Street Fighter 6 Season 2, despite all of his buffs. This happens because Zangief simply cannot grab opponents that end up behind him at all, making it difficult to properly angle this attack.
The round doesn’t stop there, though, as Boltstrike begins to make a comeback despite whiffing three supers in a row. You’ll have to check out the clip below to see how the rest shakes out.
