On Saturday, Hurriya Lawal, the wife of Zamfara governor, expressed dismay over the dilapidated state of the Government Girls’ Arabic Secondary School, Gusau, saying, “It is unacceptable.”
Mrs Lawal, who was on an assessment tour of the school, said education was one of the Governor Dauda Lawal-led administration’s top priorities.
The school was among the several secondary schools shut down by the immediate past administration because of security challenges.
The governor’s wife said, “I am happy with this visit. I can see the condition of this school, and I have listened to the principal’s presentation.
“I noticed a lot of challenges, especially the issues of electricity, lack of vehicles, absence of matrons and health workers, and general dilapidation of the students’ hostels, among others.
“This is unacceptable; we cannot continue to allow schools for our children to continue to be closed,” she said.
“As we all know, my husband, Governor Dauda Lawal, since his assumption of office as governor of this state, has given priority to education.
“I have great passion for girl-child education, and we will make sure that our children in this school return to continue with their studies,” she said.
Mrs Lawal promised that the state government would urgently renovate and reopen the school.
Earlier, the school’s principal, Hafsatu Musa, commended the governor’s wife for the visit.
Ms Musa said the school was closed down about three years ago by the previous administration.
“Before, we had over 2000 female students after deboarding this school. We currently have about 100 day students,” she said.
