Touch of death sequences are shunned in most fighting games as the ability to finish off a foe in a single hit just isn’t all that conducive to fun in the long term, but there’s an exception when it comes to the nearly 25 year old Marvel vs. Capcom 2.
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is a 3v3 game with an acute slant towards offense, and seeing a character finished off in a single hit is fairly commonplace. The most successful MvC2 competitor of all time, Justin Wong, took on an interesting challenge recently as he let his viewers submit random teams of three that he then would have to try to make a 100% combo with. Continue on to see how it went.
There are a few preliminary rules as Justin uses Cable, a character with the average health value, and is allotted maximum super resources. Health values in MvC2 are presented a bit differently than in many other modern titles, and it’s worth discussing briefly since we do get to see the combo damage on screen.
All characters have 143 hit points, so a combo that does 143 damage is effectively a touch of death. Characters vary, however, in their resiliency to damage, so some lose more hit points than others while being hit with the same move.
Sentinel is the most resilient and takes only 75% of the damage an average character like Cable takes. On the other end of the spectrum are characters like Akuma or Roll, both of who take 137% compared to average fighters.
As we watch Justin take on the challenges, we see an intriguing puzzle solving process emerge in front of us in real time. Things begin with seemingly endless potential, but then Justin finds a promising starting point and begins theorizing about subsequent steps.
The MvC GOAT takes on quite a few different teams in the full video below. Give it a watch to pass the time between now and the upcoming release of Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics.
