A recently surfaced patent suggests Xiaomi is currently hard at work on a DSLR-like camera zoom system for its smartphones. In other words, Xiaomi is preparing something exciting for its smartphone camera setup. A leaked poster indicates the company will launch the Xiaomi 12T series and a couple of other products on October 4.
In the meantime, the company is also working on an interesting camera system. This piece of information comes from the noted lekaer Digital Chat Station (via XiaomiUI). Most modern smartphones come with multiple camera setups. This enables the handsets to deliver different focal lengths.
However, users have to digitally zoom in to reach a specific focal length while changing lenses. This allows you to capture decent photos. However, recording videos while switching between lenses causes stutters or unsharp images. To recap, Samsung released Galaxy S4 Zoom and K Zoom featuring variable focal length cameras.
Xiaomi Leaked Patent Shows DSLR-Like Camera Zoom System

S0, there will be no telephoto or ultrawide camera on the back. The image shared by DCS showcases a smartphone with a single rear-mounted camera.

However, it is worth mentioning here this is a mere placeholder image. The image does not show a larger camera sensor with variable focal length. In fact, it is capable of physically moving like actual cameras. Xiaomi needs just one camera sensor to implement a DSLR-like camera zoom system.
So, this could be a game changer if Xiaomi uses a great sensor. Notably, more sensors make a camera system more impressive. Xiaomi’s plan to implement this exciting camera system is quite refreshing. However, the Chinese smartphone giant is not the first OEM to come up with this idea.
The Xperia 1 IV from Sony features an actual optical zoom camera. Also, the phone’s camera system has a hidden variable focal length. So, Sony is offering a better solution without much protruding. Also, it is unclear whether Xiaomi will make something like the patent shows. A patent doesn’t guarantee the Xiaomi DSLR-like camera zoom system will see the light of the day.
