CALABAR– In a bid to mark the 2024 edition of the International Day for Forest, conservationists and forest experts gathered in Idundu, a Cross River within Akpabuyo LGA to address the pressing issue of deforestation and its dire consequences for humanity and the environment.
Leading the conversation was the alarming rate of deforestation in Cross River State, which threatens not only the biodiversity of the region but also the health and well-being of both humans and wildlife.
A resource person and Professor of Plant Science and Biotechnology, Prof. Samuel E. Udoh of the University of Cross River State, UNICROSS, emphasized the urgent need to halt deforestation activities and focus on reforestation efforts. Stressing the importance of reforesting creeks to sustain marine life, which in turn sustains human populations.
In his speech, Mr. Lawrence Peter of Policy Alert another resource person, highlighted the need for collective action to address the harmful impact of human activities on the environment. He urged communities to join hands with organizations like We The People to find sustainable solutions to environmental degradation.
As part of activities to mark the 2024 edition of International Forest Day, We The People launched the Community Participatory Mangrove Restoration Project (CopMaRP). According to comrade Ukeme Ekong, Office Manager of We the People who facilities the project lead, Mr. Ken Henshaw, the initiative aims to engage local communities in mangrove restoration efforts, recognizing the crucial role of mangroves in mitigating climate change and preserving biodiversity.
The village heads of Idundu and Orok Ekon, HH Effiom Ebanga and Chief Archibong Orok respectively, welcomed the initiative and pledged their support. They emphasized the importance of collaboration between NGOs and local communities in addressing environmental challenges.
During the launch event, Prof. Samuel Udo highlighted the role of mangroves in regulating carbon levels and combating climate change. He urged for careful forest management to mitigate the adverse effects of deforestation.
