Consequent on the theme for this year’s WHD which borders in depression, the Cross River State Government through the State Ministry of Health has set up a depression management team
Nigeria is one of the most stressed and yet happy countries in the world but the recent increase in suicide actions in the country seems to prove otherwise. Many believe the major cause of depression in Nigeria is centered on the present economic situation, psychological and emotional factor, and social vices.
As the world continues to discuss and create more awareness on depression as the theme of this year’s World Health Day, the Cross River State Government through the Ministry of Health has set up a team of experts to help depressed persons across board and thus curb the rise of suicidal actions in the state and the country as a whole.
According to the State Commissioner for Health, Dr Inyang Asibong “this move became necessary as the spate of suicide attempts is on the rise across the country with not enough psychiatric hospitals. So instead of just reading about it we thought it important to create a platform where these victims can talk freely and be helped; as the first step of healing in depression is talking to somebody” she said.
The team is made up of diverse professionals who are available round the clock to listen and guide people away from depression instead of the option of masking depression with alcohol, nicotine and/or unhealthy living.
