Former Manchester United defender, Rio Ferdinand, has hailed Lionel Messi’s display in Argentina’s win over Australia on Saturday as the “best individual performance” at the 2022 World Cup.
Messi scored in his 1,000th appearance game, helping his country secure a 2-1 win and passage into the quarter-final.
The 35-year-old also set up two big chances for Lautaro Martinez but the substitute squandered them, as the South Americans clung on in the late stages.
“Messi has put on the best individual performance we’ve seen at this World Cup so far, by a mile.
“Showboating, laying shots on a plate for teammates, and the crowd – it was almost god-like, after every single thing he does,” Ferdinand said on BBC.
