Wolves confident of keeping Ruben Neves despite transfer interest from Manchester United and Arsenal

Wolves are confident they can keep Ruben Neves until the end of the season – despite strong transfer interest from Manchester United and Arsenal.

According to The Sun, the Wanderers are more and more hopeful they can keep the central midfielder in January, despite losing Adama Traore to Barcelona.

Neves is staying put at Wolves until at least the end of the season

Neves has been a standout performer for Wolves for the last four seasons and demand for his signature has increased.

The 24-year-old openly admitted his desire to play Champions League football in December and that has put big clubs on red-alert.

Manchester United have always been mooted as a possible destination for the Portuguese, but this month Arsenal have also been linked with a move.

It’s said United were confident an offer of £35million would have been enough to lure him to Old Trafford, but with little under a week remaining of the transfer window a deal is now very unlikely.

Neves currently has two years left on his current deal at Molineux and any potential deal will now most likely have to wait until the summer unless something drastic happens.

Bruno Lage’s men are in fantastic form and just four points off fourth-placed Manchester United with a game in hand.

Earlier this month, Lage made clear that Neves is vital to his side.

“We spoke about him six weeks ago, and I challenged him to be better every day and to grow up in the defensive way and understand he is a defensive midfielder,” he said.

“These are the goals. He knows when he is defending he cannot forget to work for the team, and when he has the ball he needs to understand the moment, because it’s the game with the ball that gives the dimension he deserves.

“He’s doing that and coming every day with the mentality to be better and have that dimension.

“I challenged him and some other players, ‘why are you not playing for your national team?’.

“We cannot forget that when we are defending we need to work for the team, but it’s the game with the ball that gives the other dimension.

“The challenge now is to continue in that way. He did very well against Chelsea and Man United. Different games with different spaces to play, and he did very well.”

Lage added: “I am happy because he is doing the things I want and is a good player to help the team go to the next level.”
