Few fighting game franchises rival the status and legacy of Mortal Kombat, and while the particularly bloody series owes its success to a myriad of strengths, the beautifully-handled tension between good and evil in the lore is a major contributor.
That tension is very dependent on having powerful, charismatic, and badass villains to balance the virtuous good guys, and Mortal Kombat has no shortage of epic baddies. Who is the greatest of them all, however? We turn to True Under Dawg Gaming and his latest video for an answer.
Mortal Kombat 1 kicked off with a pair of iconic bosses in the four-armed bruiser Goro and deceptive sorcerer Shang Tsung. Despite his status, we quickly find Shang has recruited Goro to do the heavy lifting in MK1, and that he himself is directly subservient to Shao Kahn.
Shang didn’t have much of a chance to be top dog as he appeared in the early Mortal Kombat entries, but the character has evolved a lot and plays a very prominent role in the most recent Mortal Kombat 11. While he may not have the most brute strength or spell power, he may be the most charismatically manipulative character in the series.
Paired with the acting skills of the great Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Shang Tsung has grown through the ranks and is easily a candidate for greatest MK villain. That said, he surely still has plenty of competition via the likes of Quan Chi, Sindel, Shao Kahn, Mileena, and the tons of other impressive evil doers Ed Boon and his team have thought up over the years.
