Manchester United are nearing the completion of a deal to sign 17-year-old left-back Diego Leon from Paraguayan side Cerro Porteno.
Diego Leon, who was promoted to the senior squad this summer, has already made 19 appearances for the club, scoring two goals.
According to reports, negotiations between United and Cerro Porteno are “very advanced,” with a transfer fee of £3.14 million reportedly agreed.
However, final details, such as a percentage of future sales, remain under discussion.
Despite the progress, United will have to wait before making the transfer official.
Leon, currently 17, is ineligible to join the club until he turns 18 in April.
This means the move can only be finalised during the summer transfer window.
United’s current left-wing-back situation presents challenges.
Luke Shaw has been plagued by recurring injuries, while Tyrell Malacia has only recently returned from a long-term layoff, raising questions about his suitability as a long-term solution.
With Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system relying heavily on wing-backs, reinforcements in this position are crucial.
The potential signing of Diego Leon aligns with INEOS’s strategy of targeting young talents with the aim of developing them into first-team players or selling them for a profit.
As the transfer edges closer, we take a deeper look at who Diego Leon is and what he could bring to Manchester United.
