Manchester United have cast their sights wider than Europe in their search for a new left-back, now targeting Diego Leon.
United’s battle for a reliable left-back has gone on for nearly a year, with first-choice Luke Shaw consistently ruled out through injury.
The England international has appeared to recover, re-joining the first team on several occasions over the last year, only to be side-lined once more.
As such United are keen to find a long-term reliable replacement for Shaw, with the position being a priority over the coming month.
The search has led the recruitment team to Paraguay where Diego Leon plays for Cerro Porteno.
The 17-year-old was promoted to the senior squad this summer, already making 19 appearances for the side, grabbing two goals.

Manchester United’s pursuit of Diego Leon
La Nación has reported that United have opened talks with the South American club regarding a potential transfer.
According to César Luis Merlo, the clubs are in “very advanced negotiations” with a fee agreed of £3.14 million. However, some finer points like a percentage of future sales are still being discussed.
Unfortunately for United though, they will have to wait to make anything official.
At only 17 years old, Leon is not eligible to join United until he turns 18 in April.
As such, the Premier League side will have to wait until the summer transfer window to officially sign the star and bring him to Old Trafford.
The United recruitment team believe that Leon has the athletic ability to fit into Amorim’s system at left-wing-back, with his physical profile fitting in with the Portuguese manager’s expectations of the role.
