It has been disclosed that about half of Nigeria’s estimated two hundred and fifty million population currently reside in informal settlements, even as more than 75% of its 42million housing facilities are unfit for human habitation.
The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Musa Dangiwa, gave these alarming statistics while speaking on the sidelines of the 2nd Session of the 2024 UN-Habitat Executive Board Meeting in Nairobi, Kenya as published on the ministry’s website.
The Housing Minister highlighted the federal government’s efforts to tackle the sad development through the National Urban Renewal and Slum Upgrade Programme (NURSUP) which activities have successfully completed projects at 54 sites across the country, with 56 others at various stages of completion.
He said the initiative is to improve essential infrastructure such as water supply, solar-power supply, access roads, drainage systems, and waste management solutions.
Dangiwa stressed the importance of robust partnerships with international organizations like UN-Habitat to expand these initiatives and ensure long-term sustainable urban development.
