Killakob3s would still almost manage to come all the way back though
Celebrating and popping off is part of fighting games (and pretty much any major competition), but doing so always comes with some risk.
Most people here should remember quite well the infamous Woshige moment from Evo 2015 with the premature popoff leading to a set loss, and we witnessed something very similar happen this weekend at Combo Breaker 2024.
At the start of the top 8 for BlazBlue: Central Fiction, Killakob3s and G.U.|Monarch’s winner’s semi-final (ironically the same as Woshige in Guilty Gear Xrd) came down to the final game and final round.
Killakob3s would land what should have been the finishing combo with Bang in his enhanced state, so he puts the controller down, gets up with his arms raised in the air and goes for the fistbump with Monarch — as even he was starting to stand up too.
The match was not over it turns out, however.
Since the stream camera cut away, we can’t see exactly what happened, but Monarch quickly sat back down and started combo’ing Bang before Killakob3s could fully react.
We’d get to hear the echo of Woshige’s celebration from the commentary desk shouting “What are you standing up for!”

One more mixup would seal the deal, and Monarch would walk away victorious while Killakob3s could only sit there understandably a bit dejected for a few seconds and shrug his hands like ‘what can you do?’
Killakob3s would take to social media afterwards and explained that he apparently accidentally “fat fingered” the Rapid Cancel input on his controller as he went to sit it down.
This made him cancel out of what would have been the final command grab and instead just went back to neutral like a Roman Cancel in Guilty Gear.
Anyone drinking anywhere got room for woshige#2

Although unfortunate, Killakob3s would seemingly take this lesson in stride and fight his way back all the way to grand finals where he got a rematch with Monarch once again — but he’d end up eliminated in grand finals, finishing in second place for his efforts.
2nd place
Close ass set in grands and I would’ve had winners adv if I didn’t throw. I can’t be mad w that, I’ll win the next one

Would the events have played out differently had that final combo in winners semi-final connected? We’ll of course never truly know, but there’s lessons to be learned all around.
And good stuff to Killakob3s for coming all the way back up from loser’s bracket to still almost take the whole tournament anyway.
