Akwa United Football Club through its Chairman, Elder Paul Bassey have extended heartfelt thanks to its sponsors and supporters following what has been described as a ‘turbulent’ 2023/2024 NPFL season.
In a departure from the club’s performance standards over the past eight years, the Promise Keepers found themselves in an intense battle for survival throughout the 2023/2024 season. However, a decisive 3-1 victory over Rivers United FC on the final day secured their place in the top flight.
Following their narrow escape from relegation, Akwa United expressed profound gratitude to God Almighty, the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, the Honorable Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, and the club’s loyal fans and supporters. Their unwavering support was instrumental during the challenging 2023-24 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season.
Speaking to the club’s staff on Monday morning in Uyo, Club Chairman Elder Paul Bassey began by thanking God for journey mercies and protection throughout the season. He also emphasized the crucial victories that helped the club retain its Premier League status, crediting the relentless prayers of the club’s spiritual leaders for these successes.
Elder Bassey expressed special gratitude to Governor Umo Eno for his immense support and trust during what he described as the most turbulent season the club has faced in the past eight years.
His words: “His Excellency Governor Umo Eno should be appreciated for all the encouragement , moral and financial support we got during the season just ended.

“His Excellency’s love and support for the beautiful game has been massive and that support is evident even in his administration’s support for grassroot development as well as matches involving our senior national team the Super Eagles
Bassey also commended the Honourable Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports, Sir Monday Ebong Uko, referring to him as his “pillar of strength.” He lauded Uko’s unwavering support and encouragement, describing his leadership as exemplary. “ I never met his doors closed,” Bassey said of the Commisioner. ” Working with him has been an experience that gold cannot buy. Impossible does not exist in this man’s dictionary of life. He hates regrets and “had I known “ always pushing and encouraging. His belief in me as a person and in my capacity propels me to greater heights. An exemplary leader “ The Chairman said.
The Club Chairman extended his thanks to football administrators, fans, and the media community across the country for their encouragement throughout the difficult season. He also acknowledged the club’s technical crew, led by Coach Babaganaru, who took on the challenge and succeeded despite the club’s struggles. Bassey praised the players, management, and staff for their dedication, describing them as “committed, prayerful, and hard-working.”
