We recently learned that Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, Conan the Barbarian, and the T-1000 are coming to Mortal Kombat 1 via the Kombat Pack 2. Notably, Cyrax, Sektor, and Noob Saibot will all be available alongside the Khaos Reigns story expansion on September 24, 2024.
Over at San Diego Comic Con, Ed Boon briefly discussed the future of Mortal Kombat 1. As we already know, a story expansion was always in the plans, but Ed Boon elaborated that this is only the second year of NetherRealm Studios’ plans.
“With Mortal Kombat 11, we had Mortal Kombat 11, Aftermath, and then Ultimate,” said Boon. “So we would keep adding characters and story.”
“So we were pretty sure when we launched Mortal Kombat 1 that we were going to be doing years of content, and this is year two.” — Ed Boon
Throughout Mortal Kombat 11’s lifespan, 13 DLC characters would get released (counting Shao Kahn as a DLC fighter). By this point, 13 DLC fighters have been revealed for Mortal Kombat 1 (counting Shang Tsung as a DLC fighter).
“That’s kind of the way we’re doing our games now,” continued Boon. “So we were pretty sure when we launched Mortal Kombat 1 that we were going to be doing years of content, and this is year two.”
“One year later, we’re now announcing six new characters, a new story, and Animalities as parts of the new expansion,” concluded Boon.
Needless to say, fans took notice how Ed Boon stated that this is only the second year for Mortal Kombat 1. In other words, there could be a third year of content and possibly more later down the road.
Of course, it’s definitely worth mentioning that Boon had previously declared that NetherRealm Studios was “not even klose” to being done with post-launch content for Mortal Kombat 11.
To be fair, NetherRealm Studios would then go on to release Kombat Pack 2 featuring Mileena, Rain, and John Rambo, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, and Friendships before the conclusion of the game’s second year. Some time later, it was announced that NRS was finished with post-launch support as they had moved on to their next project, which we now know as Mortal Kombat 1.
Since Mortal Kombat 9, NRS has gone on to support their fighting games for longer periods of time with every release. This suggests that Mortal Kombat 1 could have a third year of DLC down the pipeline.
These are certainly interesting statements, but we’ll have to see how they pan out in the long run.
