We had no idea that Guile's Overdrive Sonic Cross can cause a wall splat effect in Street Fighter 6

Welp, Street Fighter 6 is the gift that keeps on giving. It feels like we learn something new about this game almost every day, as it’s clear that there is still so much left to find in Capcom’s latest fighting title.

We have been playing this game since the first beta, and yet, we were today years old when we learned that one of the versions of Guile’s Overdrive Sonic Cross can actually wall splat the opponent.

A clip was shared yesterday on X (formerly Twitter) by a user named rarirario222. In it, we see Guile firing back against Ken’s Hadoken with an Overdrive Sonic Cross that barrels through, hits him, and sends him flying back into a wall splat state in the corner.

Fighting game community lore keeper HiFight quoted the tweet and explained what exactly is going on here. Apparently, when Guile uses the Overdrive version of Sonic Blade, and then uses the Overdrive Sonic Cross follow-up, it has the ability to wall splat the opponent if they are close enough to a corner.

Sonic Blade is a unique special move that places a stationary projectile on screen in front of Guile. He can use it on its own, or opt to use a follow-up by pressing a punch button to shoot a beefed up projectile in Sonic Cross (or two punches for OD Sonic Cross).

As HiFight points out, there are actually two versions of Overdrive Sonic Cross. Guile can perform a regular Sonic Blade and then Overdrive Sonic Cross for the cost of just two bars of Drive Gauge, or use OD Sonic Blade and OD Sonic Cross at the expense of four Drive Gauge bars for an even more powerful projectile.

Rarirario222’s clip demonstrates a scenario where the beefed up OD Sonic Cross is used from further out to counter zone, and even from nearly full screen away, Guile can raw Drive Rush up and still continue the combo as Ken hits the wall. We see a full juggle combo here into Guile’s Critical Art, which deals a whopping 6,770 damage.

Testing this myself a little bit, there are even more practical ways to use this technique. A simple punish counter combo in the corner can allow Guile to land the OD Sonic Blade and OD Sonic Cross follow-up in a standard combo, and when the opponent is on the wall, Guile can connect a heavy Flash Kick as they come down and cancel into level 3 for upwards of 6,000 damage.

It is definitely an expensive option for Guile to use in battle as it consumes four Drive Gauge bars right away, but it certainly looks as though it has its uses. Guile players will surely want to hit the lab to see what else they can find with this fascinating revelation (assuming they don’t know about it already).
