Wayne Rooney looks headed for the sack after Plymouth Argyle’s recent run of poor results.
Plymouth is Rooney’s fourth management position since hanging up his boots in 2021.
The ex-England international took on the role of player and caretaker manager at his final club, Derby County, before being appointed as the club’s permanent manager in January 2021.
After a year and a half Rooney left the club as Derby were relegated to League One from the Championship.
A month later in July 2022, Rooney returned to his former MLS club, D.C. United, where he managed the side for just over a year.
Then in October 2023, Rooney returned to England to manage Birmingham City. This was unfortunately the shortest tenure of his managerial career, surviving only 15 matches, only winning two, seeing Birmingham fall to 20th place.
Rooney was without a club between January and May this year until Plymouth threw him a lifeline, appointing him as their manager on a three-year contract.
However, The Guardian has now reported that Rooney may not survive the first 12 months.
Wayne Rooney has one last chance to avoid being sacked
The report explains that Rooney is on his last chance, trying to fight to save his job.
In the last week alone, Plymouth have experienced two losses in the Championship, dropping them to 2st in the league.
Whilst the club has been fairly stagnant at the bottom of the table this season, their last two matches were particularly bad.
After a 6-1 loss to Norwich, Rooney’s side went on to lose 4-0 to Bristol City, conceding 10 goals in two games.
Thankfully the club are still clear of the relegation zone by two points, however the results need to improve soon for Rooney to keep his role
