There will be infinites…
Most of us know about Street Fighter 2: Rainbow Edition and the zany antics that come out of it, but what happens when someone throws a Rainbow Edition tournament and people that actually understand the game show up to play?
That’s what happens in JM Crofts’ recent upload as he featured the infamous ROM hack version of Street Fighter in his latest community tourney. Seeing these matches play out makes us sure of two things: they’re awesome, and we’re sure glad we’re not the ones playing.
What kinds of alterations are we talking about when it comes to Rainbow Edition? If you’re new or need a reminder, RE gives every character ridiculous abilities that almost instantly break the game.
Vega’s roll launches a homing Hadoken, Ryu’s heavy Dragon Punch horizontally crosses the screen, Blanka can perform electricity in midair… and you can switch your character at any time during the fight by pressing start.
With rules this loose, the competitive nature of the game obviously dissolves quite rapidly. That said, JM’s tourney does feature competitors who are playing to win, and strategy does emerge even between the ridiculous, omega, god versions of the World Warriors.
One bout between The Munin and Perfect Orange, for example, sees the two players get into a fireball war that takes the timer down to the wire… and the characters to space. Well, they actually wind up going so high above the top of the screen that they reappear (Pac-Man style) at the bottom of the frame.
