Manchester United have endured tough times since the start of the season in front of goal.
The underwhelming performance of the goalscoring department has been particularly noted by observers.
Scoring goals has been a problem that began last season under manager Erik Ten Hag, who couldn’t find a solution to fix the issue.
While new head coach Ruben Amorim kicked off his career with United by overseeing eight goals scored across his first three matches in charge, the momentum crashed against Arsenal as they left the Emirates Stadium conceding two and netting none.
What was more concerning was the lack of any real chances being created either.
17 goals over the first 14 games of the English Premier League season is a disappointing number for a team – especially more for a club like United.
It’s clear that Man United are in desperate search of a lethal striker who can help the team by putting the ball in the back of the net.
The Red Devils’ search has led them to consider the potential signing of Europe’s hot topic this season as a rescue bid out of this precarious situation.
As reported earlier, United had begun the pursuit of Sporting Lisbon’s star striker Viktor Gyokeres, who registered 66 goals and 23 assists in 68 games during Amorim’s time with the club.
Ever since Amorim walked in the door at Old Trafford, speculation has been rife that he will bring his former charge with him to Manchester.
And it seems that the club now know what it would take to sign the Sweden striker.
According to a recent report by A Bola, the Sporting CP administration are set to consider offers with an initial value of €70 million plus bonuses, which are set to increase his price in the long term, for the former Coventry City striker.
Clubs know that negotiating with the Portuguese side is the only viable way forward in securing the signature of the 26-year-old as there is a €100 million release clause inserted in his current contract.
A Bola report that any offers in the upcoming December transfer window will need to be at the full release clause.
However, the situation in the summer will be different.
Sporting will be open to negotiations in the summer and a lower fee will be more acceptable at that point.
A move for United at €70m should be more attainable as the club are currently labouring to comply with Profit and Sustainability rules.
Whatever the case may be, signing Viktor Gyokeres in the summer should definitely be on the club’s agenda.
Especially if he’s available for a fee lower than his release clause.
