The Director General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ahmed Rufai Abubakar, has tendered his resignation.
He resigned on Saturday in a letter he dispatched to the President, Bola Tinubu.
Abubakar was appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2018 in controversial circumstances after the dismissal of Ayo Oke in 2017.
The former president extended his tenure in 2021 despite alleged protest from top brass in the NIA.
He said Tinubu accepted his resignation after a routine briefing at the presidential villa.
He however cited personal reasons for his resignation and stated his continued commitment to Nigeria’s security.
Abubakar who is from the same place as Buhari expressed gratitude to Tinubu for the opportunity to serve.
