The Unubiko Foundation on Saturday screened a total of 347 students for its 2025 Scholarship Award as part of the foundation’s annual effort to provide financial assistance to deserving undergraduates across Nigeria.
The screening test, held at the Faculty of Agriculture, Abia State University (ABSU) Campus in Umuahia, is a key part of the scholarship programme aimed at easing the financial burden on indigent but academically outstanding students
Addressing candidates before the commencement of the examination, the Secretary of the Unubiko Scholarship Programme, Engr. Dr Okoro Christopher Kalu, urged them to take the opportunity seriously and remain committed to their academic pursuits, emphasising that education remains a powerful tool for personal and societal development.
Providing further insights into the selection process during an interview with THE WHISTLER, Engr. Okoro revealed that out of the 2,000 applications received, over 400 candidates were shortlisted for the screening, with 347 ultimately participating in the exam.
“The exam is a crucial part of the selection process, but it is not the only deciding factor. We also evaluate each candidate’s academic record, character, and financial background to ensure that those who truly need the support get it,” he explained.
He noted that the Unubiko Foundation, led by its chairman, Chief James Ume, is committed to ensuring that deserving students receive the necessary educational support to help them thrive.
Also speaking with THE WHISTLER after the test, some candidates expressed gratitude for the opportunity.
Okwuchukwu Emmanuel, an engineering student at Michael Okpara University, described the test as fair but challenging.
“It was a good test. The questions required deep thinking. I did my best, and I hope I am selected because this scholarship would make a huge difference for me and my family,” he said.
Possible Omere, a radiography student at Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), said she initially expected a different format but was pleasantly surprised by the nature of the test.
“I was expecting more abstract or general questions, but when I got here, I found out it was just an essay. Once you understand your course deeply, you’ll definitely be able to tackle it. I believe I did well,” she said.
Beyond the examination, she spoke about what winning the scholarship would mean for her and her family.
“If I’m awarded the scholarship, it will go a long way in supporting me financially and reducing the burden on my parents. I’m very grateful for this opportunity,” she said.
She also praised the organisers for the smooth conduct of the test, adding that the entire process gave her confidence and motivation to keep pushing academically.
Opara Chidera, a law student at Abia State University, commended the foundation for its consistency in supporting students. She noted that the initiative not only eases students’ financial burdens but also enhances their access to academic resources, allowing them to focus better on their studies.
“Having academic issues alongside financial problems can really affect one’s performance. I want to sincerely thank the foundation and the scholarship panel for this opportunity because it will go a long way in supporting our academic journey,” she said.
The Unubiko Foundation, which awarded scholarships to 192 students in 2024, has been at the forefront of educational support in Nigeria. With its growing reputation for transparency and merit-based selection, the foundation, which covers scholars’ tuition until graduation, has become a beacon of hope for students struggling to fund their education.
Engr. Okoro, however, assured that the results of the screening test would be released in the coming weeks and encouraged candidates to remain hopeful.
“We are committed to fairness, and the most deserving students will be awarded the scholarship. Education is the foundation of national development, and the Unubiko Foundation will continue to invest in the future of young Nigerians,” he stated.
