The University of Port Harcourt (UniPort) has issued a statement clarifying the recent incident on campus, contrary to reports of a student’s death.
According to Dr Sam Kpenu, Head of Information, Publications, and Public Relations, a fight between students was promptly addressed by the university management, security unit, and anti-cultism unit of the Nigeria Police, resulting in the apprehension of the individuals involved.
Kpenu, in a press statement on Friday, said the students are currently facing interrogation at the Nigeria Police Force headquarters in Port Harcourt.
He added that the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Owunari Georgewill was on the scene, ensuring the swift resolution of the matter and taking necessary actions to restore normalcy.
He emphasized that no student was killed or injured in the incident, which has been exaggerated by online reports.
He reaffirmed the Varsity’s commitment to maintaining professionalism, safeguarding students, and upholding a zero-tolerance policy towards cultism, bullying, and disruptive behaviour.
“The University of Port Harcourt remains committed to maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and safeguarding our students.
“We reiterate our zero-tolerance policy towards cultism, bullying, and any form of disruptive social behaviour on our campus,” he said.
He further stated that the campus had been calm, with staff and students going about their duties and classes as usual.
