The Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Prof. Zana Akpagu has warned that his administration would have zero–tolerance for involvement in anti-Social activities such as examination malpractice, secret cult activities and use of dangerous weapons in the Institution.
The Vice Chancellor gave the warning while delivering his address at the 38th Matriculation ceremony of the Institution which was held at the Abraham Ordia Stadium.
Prof. Akpagu informed the Matriculants that they were the privileged few out of a total of 21,247 candidates that applied for admission, because only 8,259 students were admitted into the various disciplines of the University for2015/2016 academic session.
According to the Vice Chancellor, of the total number of8,259 candidates admitted, the breakdown shows that3,949 students were admitted into Sciences courses,4,410 for Arts Courses while 3,060 were admitted for non NUC programmes of the Centre for Educational Services (CES).
He admonished the students to ensure that they complete their registration at all levels electronically, stressing that all admitted students should take the pains of doing their registration by themselves without a third party, adding that, this was to ensure that their records are properly captured in the University´s Data Base and kept safe for future reference.
Advising all the matriculating students who have duly paid their University charges to formally sign the Matriculation Register and obtain their Matriculation Numbers automatically in the Registry, Prof. Akpagu said as the ‘first Malabite’ to become Vice Chancellor of the University, his administration´s priority is the welfare of all Malabites and Malabresses.
The University don further said that he believes students form the core of the University hence the reason he would continue to create a conductive environment as exemplified by provision of mattresses, double bunk beds, refurbishing hostels and building new ones, rehabilitating and building more classroom desks and laboratory equipment, creation of recreation facilities, street light and beautification of the institution’s ambience.
The 10th Vice Chancellor expressed the hope that these welfare efforts would infuse in the students a new enthusiasm and zeal in the pursuit of academic excellence.
Prof. Akpagu while wishing the Matriculants the best of luck and Gods guidance´s as they embark on their academic journey, congratulated all the Matriculants on assuming full membership of the University of Calabar and urged them to take active part in sports activities so as to keep healthy and alert so as to not only pass through the University but have the University pass through them.
