The Academic Staff Union of Universities, University of Calabar chapter (ASUU-UCB) has aligned itself with the National Headquarters of ASUU condemning the cancelation of the post-UTME. Yesterday 20 July, congress contended that it was an infraction on university autonomy that gives power to respective university Senate on academic matters, including admissions which must be respected.
Our source who pleaded for anonymity, explained that ASUU argued that besides the issue of university autonomy, they were bent on disobeying the resolution of the federal government owing to the fact that, 'the 2016 /2017 admission exercise had already commenced, hence to change the guidelines in the middle of the process will not only disadvantage many applicants, it will ridicule the integrity of the admission exercise as a whole'.
Again, 'the conditions that led to the introduction of the post-UTME have not been obviated', our source continued.
Finally, the quality of graduates from any university depends in a crucial way on the quality of intake. Thus, universities worldwide struggle to recruit best students.
*Are these reasons, reasons enough to necessitate boycotting federal government resolution on the above matter? The reader should pass his/her judgement.
