The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intensified its operations nationwide, intercepting large consignments of illicit drugs and arresting multiple suspects involved in drugs while destroying cannabis farms between March 31 and April 5, 2025.
The agency’s activities spanned several states, including Lagos, Abuja, Abia, Yobe, Kogi, Anambra, Cross River, and the Federal Capital Territory.
On Monday, March 31, NDLEA operatives in Kogi State arrested 33-year-old Ngozi Ogili on the Okene-Lokoja highway while she was transporting 3kg of methamphetamine from Lagos to Abuja in a commercial bus.
A follow-up operation in the Apo mechanic area, Abuja, led to the discovery of additional quantities of Loud and Colorado, both synthetic cannabis variants.
On Tuesday, April 1, NDLEA officers in Abia State apprehended David Chinemerem, 21, at 7 Nnajiego Lane, Umuode Road, Aba, in possession of 2,050 ampoules of pentazocine.
On Thursday, April 3, the agency recorded multiple arrests: in Lagos, John Abugu, 43, and Kenneth Abugu, 31, were arrested at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) with 5kg of cocaine concealed in their luggage while en route to India.
“Whitish powdery substances later confirmed to be cocaine were discovered on the walls of their bags,” the agency said, adding that they had claimed to be travelling for medical treatment.
That same day, April 3, MMIA Strategic Command operatives intercepted Parker Darren Hazekia Osei, a 20-year-old Ghanaian-British student from East London University, with 36 parcels of Loud weighing 19.40kg.
The arrest occurred during the inward clearance of passengers arriving from Bangkok via Ethiopian Airlines.
In a statement, “the techie claims he lives with his parents in the UK but left London about a week ago for Bangkok where he picked up the illicit drug consignment to deliver in Nigeria.”
Also on April 3, NDLEA operatives in Wuse Market, Abuja, arrested Sunday Ayogu, 51, with 25kg of skunk and 90.4g of methamphetamine.
The following day, Friday, April 4, two women, Faith Effiong Etim, 64, and Victoria Asuquo Etim, 40, were arrested in Cross River State when NDLEA operatives, supported by the Nigerian Army, stormed cannabis plantations in Esuk-Odot community, Odukpani LGA, destroying 250,000kg of cannabis grown over 100 hectares of farmland.
On Saturday, April 5, in Abia, a 75-year-old man, Nna Nnanna Felix, was arrested during a raid in Umunteke Asa, Ukwa West LGA, with 1.6kg of skunk.
The same day in Yobe State, operatives seized 381 bottles of codeine syrup and 108 tramadol tablets from Abdullahi Adamu along the Potiskum–Damaturu road.
Coordinated raids at Osogbo motor park, Onitsha, and a house in Oba, Idemili LGA, Anambra, led to the arrest of Obinna Sunday and the confiscation of 195,000 tramadol pills. Another suspect, Ugochukwu Ojalanonye, was also arrested with 4.2kg of codeine syrup and 5.4kg of pentazocine.
Commending the efforts of NDLEA formations across the states, Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd), praised the officers of MMIA, SOU, Yobe, Abia, Kogi, Anambra, Cross River, and FCT for their operations.
He noted that “their operational successes and those of their compatriots across the country especially their balanced approach to drug supply reduction and drug demand reduction efforts are well appreciated.”
