Dusan Vlahovic’s header and Weston McKennie’s volley in the second half secured all three points for the home side, boosting their own hopes of progressing automatically to the next stage.
The loss leaves them 22nd in the Champions League table, having won just one of their last 10 games in all competitions.
Meanwhile, at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal put up a fine performance to hammer Monaco 3-0.

After a goalless first half, Raphinha opened scoring in the 52nd minute before the brace by Torress, which each came after teenager Serhou Guirassy’s goals for Dortmund.
In Spain, a stunning strike from Julian Alvarez and an Antoine Griezmann double helped Atletico Madrid to a comfortable win over Slovan Bratislava.
Elsewhere, Tammy Abraham scored a late winner to help AC Milan overcame a dogged Red Star Belgrade 2-1 at San Siro.
In the other Champions League games played on Wednesday night, Lille defeated Sturm Graz 3-2; Stuttgart thrashed Young Boys 5-1; while Benfica and Bologna played goalless draw.
