Turkey Maintains Troop Presence in Azerbaijan

11/17/2021 Turkey (International Christian Concern) – Turkey’s parliament voted to keep troops in Azerbaijan for the next year, having officially deployed Turkish peacekeepers to the Azerbaijani side on November 17, 2020. The six-week 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh war ended in early November. But recent offensives by Azerbaijani against Armenian civilians underscores the tension that remains.

Azerbaijani military opened fire on November 9 at an Armenian farmer in the Khachik village of Vayots Dzor province. The farmer was in his tractor at the time, working, and miraculously survived the shooting. The window of the tractor was damaged in the incident. A criminal case has been opened and the Russian peacekeeper authorities have been notified as a result. Azerbaijani military also attacked Armenian civilians near Shushi just one day prior on November 8.

Turkey’s continued troop presence in Nagorno-Karabakh (Armenian: Artsakh) only bolsters the boldness of the Azerbaijani military, with both nations fueling hatred towards the Christian Armenian population.
