Trump says FBI ‘stole’ his passports during raid

On Monday, former President Donald Trump said the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) “stole” his passports when they raided his Mar-a-Lago home in Florida last week.

“Wow! In the raid by the FBI of Mar-a-Lago, they stole my three Passports (one expired), along with everything else. This is an assault on a political opponent at a level never seen before in our Country,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “Third World!”

The FBI raided Trump’s home on Aug 8, and seized more than 20 boxes of materials, including binders of photos, a handwritten note, the executive grant of clemency for Roger Stone, and information about the “President of France,” according to an official list of the items that were removed during the search. Trump’s passports were not on the list.

In a separate social media post, Trump said that while the raid “should never have happened,” the unprecedented search warrant should give Republicans an advantage in the upcoming midterm elections.

“Republicans could win many additional seats, both in the House & Senate, because of the strong backlash over the raid at Mat-a-Lago,” Trump wrote. Polls are showing that some lost Republican territory over the last number of weeks has been more than made up with the unannounced Break In by the FBI, which should never have happened!”

Trump also slammed the raid as a “sneak attack on democracy.”

“America has never suffered this kind of ABUSE in Law Enforcement! For the FBI to RAID the home of the 45 President of the United States, or any President for that matter, is totally unheard of and unthinkable,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “This Break In was a sneak attack on democracy (our Republic!), and was both unannounced and done at a time when the President was not even present. It was for political, not legal reasons, and our entire Country is angry, hurt, and greatly embarrassed by it. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

The unsealed search warrant to raid Trump’s home revealed on Friday that the FBI is investigating Trump for a potential violation of the Espionage Act, as well as the removal or destruction of records and obstruction of an investigation. Conviction of such crimes can result in fines or imprisonment.

The intelligence community has shown disdain for Trump since he was elected president in 2016, and last week, a former CIA official who served during the Trump administration admitted that intelligence officials with access to the most sensitive information even withheld some of it from Trump while he was in office.
