Simon Lalong, the Minister of Labour and Employment has directed the suspension of all activities by the factions of the Nigerian Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) pending an amicable resolution of the dispute.

In a letter signed by Mr. Emmanuel Igbinosun, Director of Trade Union Services and Industrial Relations, on behalf of the minister, and addressed to the National President of the union, Lalong said the decision followed the meeting it held with the NURTW executives.

The letter is titled, ‘Leadership Of The National Union Road Transport Workers (NURTW) And Industrial Coup D’état By The Former President Of The Union, Alh Najeem Usman Yasin And His Rampaging Illegal Militia-A Clarion Call For Intervention.’

The letter noted that both factions in the dispute were notified about the development.

The letter read, “Following the meeting held with you on the above subject, I am directed to inform you that, in line with the power conferred on the Honourable Minister of Labour by Section 5 of the Trade Dispute Act CAP T8 Law of Federation of Nigeria, 2004, the Honourable Minister of Labour and Employment has apprehended this dispute.

“In view of the above, the Honourable Minister has directed the suspension of all further activities by the factions of the NURTW pending an amicable resolution of the dispute.

“For the avoidance of doubt, all activities in furtherance of the election of new executives and related to the day-to-day operations of the union are suspended henceforth.

“Further directives would be communicated to you on or before Friday 13th October 2023. This information has also been communicated to the other faction in the dispute.

“Please accept the assurances of the kind regards of the Honourable Minister.”

Recently, a faction of the union led by Alhaji Tajudeen Agbede who came from Lagos State forcefully took over the National Secretariat of the union located at Garki 2 and dislodged the incumbent President, Alhaji Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa.

Baruwa and three other national officers of the union were recently detained in Abuja by the police over the leadership crisis rocking the union.

Baruwa was invited to a meeting by the FCT Commissioner of Police, Haruna Garba, which was also attended by the faction of Agbede which is also with Musiliu Akinsanya, aka MC Oluomo, who was formerly leading the disbanded Lagos Park Management Committee.

MC Oluomo is an ally of President Bola Tinubu.

Earlier this month, a middle-aged man was beaten up in Abuja by some members of the union loyal to MC Oluomo after he was accused of carrying passengers.

SaharaReporters learnt that the incident occurred at Area 1 near Conoil filling station where the yet-to-be-identified young man was detained while his vehicle was impounded.

SaharaReporters gathered that he was arrested by the task force of the union and forcefully taken to Area 1 office where he was asked to pay the sum of N20,000 as a fine for allegedly carrying passengers along the road.

Trouble started when the man denied the allegation levelled against him and insisted that he did not carry any passengers in his vehicle.

The ensuing altercation resulted in fisticuffs as the man and the leader of the branch exchanged blows, a source told SaharaReporters. Other members of the union joined in the brawl and beat the young man till he was almost unconscious.

He was dragged on the floor as they hit him with sticks and iron rods.

It took the timely intervention of some bystanders who intervened to rescue him from the hoodlums who threatened to kill him.

  • APC to launch Bayelsa governorship campaign Saturday, insists on Sylva as candidate

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has promised to go ahead with the October 14 launch of its governorship campaign in Bayelsa State despite the disqualification of its candidate, Timipre Sylva, by a court.

The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said Sylva remained the party’s candidate for the November 11 election despite the court ruling.

Justice Donatus Okorowo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Monday night, disqualified the former minister of state for petroleum from taking part in the election.

The judge, who delivered the ruling in a suit filed by an APC member in Bayelsa State, Deme Kolomo, held that Sylva who had been sworn in twice and ruled for five years as governor of the state would breach the 1999 Constitution if allowed to contest again.

The former governor had since filed an appeal on the judgement at the Court of Appeal, Abuja.

Morka said: “We wish to state categorically that Chief Timipre Sylva is and remains the Bayelsa governorship candidate of our great party in the November 11, 2023 governorship election.

“Our party and its candidate have duly instructed the legal team to appeal the said decision of the Federal High Court, diligently and expeditiously.

“We urge our teeming members, supporters, and residents of Bayelsa to remain calm and await the outcome of the appeal, and we remain confident that we shall prevail.”

  • Top Biden Adviser Bragged Of Quiet Middle East One Week Before Hamas Attacked Israel

    From Daily Wire:

One week before Hamas launched a surprise attack in Israel, a top aide to President Joe Biden touted a relative calm in the Middle East.

“The Middle East region is quieter today than it has been in two decades,” said U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, according to The Atlantic. He went on to stress that “challenges remain,” citing Iran’s nuclear weapons program and “tensions” between Israel and the Palestinians, but added, “the amount of time I have to spend on crisis and conflict in the Middle East today compared to any of my predecessors going back to 9/11 is significantly reduced.”

Sullivan, a former Obama administration official, was speaking at The Atlantic Festival. He had just talked about how the larger region had reached a semblance of peace after the Biden team “walked into” a chaotic situation dating back to the prior administration.

With the conflict escalating, clips of Sullivan’s comments gained traction on social media, leading to a torrent of criticism of him and the Biden administration that included references to controversies stemming from the deadly Benghazi embassy attack in 2012 and the 2016 presidential election.

“Jake Sullivan, the former Clinton aide who participated [in both the] Benghazi and Russia hoaxes, is one of those responsible for the worst foreign policy debacles and scandals in American history,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton, alluding to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

  • US hostage rescue mission in Gaza remains on the table

In the face of the alarming hostage situation in Gaza, where at least 14 Americans have been confirmed dead, with more believed to be kidnapped by Hamas terrorists, the United States has not ruled out the potential deployment of a high-risk special operations commando rescue mission.

“We take the safety and security of Americans overseas very, very seriously,” National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said, emphasizing the nation’s commitment to ensuring the safe return of its citizens, according to the Washington Examiner.

He added, “You have seen us act as efficiently and effectively as we can to get Americans that are being held hostage or wrongfully detained, in some cases, back home with their families. We will continue to do that in this case as well.”

Kirby also noted that there is a “very grim possibility” that American citizens were captured by Hamas during the terrorist attacks against Israel.

“We have to accept the very grim possibility and the likelihood that there are Americans being held hostage,” Kirby said. “We’re in constant touch with Israeli officials right now to try to get a sense of the whereabouts of all the unaccounted-for Americans because who knows where they are or what condition they’re in.”

“We don’t even know if, or how many, are being held hostage. But how we would go about doing that? Obviously, we wouldn’t detail too much publicly,” Kirby also stated on CNN. “I would tell you, broadly speaking, that we will do what we need to do to protect our national security interests there in the region.”

Former national security adviser Robert O’Brien stressed the urgency of the situation, suggesting the immediate deployment of special forces to Israel.

“We ought to have the FBI hostage rescue team also deployed to Israel,” he stated.

  • ‘Where is forgery there?’ Atiku sheds light on the use of Sadiq Abubakar in WASSCE certificate

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has dismissed the insinuations trailing the discovery of his West African Secondary School Certificate (WASSCE).

The discrepancy in the former Vice President’s documents has generated discussions on social media, especially among the All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters, after the name ”Sadiq Abubakar” was discovered in his WAEC certificate as against other credentials.

This came a few days after the PDP candidate accused President Bola Tinubu of forging the certificate he presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) before the February 25 election.

Atiku had since applied to present the fresh evidence he got from the documents released to him by the Chicago State University against Tinubu at the Supreme Court.

The former spokesman of the Atiku/Okowa presidential campaign council, Dele Momodu, posted his principal’s clarification on his verified X platform, formerly Twitter, on Tuesday.

He said the clarification followed the allegations of forgery against Atiku by APC members.

Momodu wrote: “The APC busybodies have been bombarding me with allegations of forgery against my Principal, ALHAJI ATIKU ABUBAKAR (GCON), which I immediately forwarded to him and here is his copious response: ‘Yes I used Sadiq Abubakar to sit for my WAEC and after passing my exams I went to swear an affidavit to say I am the same person as ATIKU Abubakar.

“I went to ABU as Atiku Abubakar and passed my Exams as Atiku Abubakar. Interviewed as Atiku Abubakar by the Federal Civil Service Commission and hired into the Customs Service as Atiku Abubakar. So where is forgery there?.”

  • Fort Lauderdale airport starts building $400M terminal to handle millions more passengers

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida started work Monday on a $404 million fifth airline terminal, the airport’s most significant project in more than a decade.

During a groundbreaking ceremony, Broward County officials said the terminal will cover 230,000 square feet and should be finished in 2026.

The terminal will have five airline passenger gates for domestic flights, increasing the airport’s total to 71 gates, Mark E. Gale, CEO of Broward County Aviation Department, said in an interview.

The terminal is being built due to surging passenger and airline traffic, officials said. Through August of this year, 23.7 million passengers have gone through the airport. That’s a significant increase from the 21.3 million passengers during the same period in 2022. The new terminal will be able to handle 4 to 5 million more passengers, officials said.

The Fort Lauderdale airport expansion is expected to lead to about 3,400 direct and indirect construction-related jobs, including at more than a dozen area small businesses. Upon completion, officials estimated the new terminal will lead to the hiring of 1,000 to 1,250 people to fill permanent jobs.

JetBlue Airways Corp. — the New York-based airline that’s the second-biggest airline by passenger market share at the airport — is managing construction of the terminal on behalf of Broward County. JetBlue has hired: Parsons as program manager; M. Arthur Gensler & Associates for design work; KEITH as construction engineer inspector; and Hunt/Moss to handle risk management of the building project.

Joanna Geraghty, president and chief operating officer of JetBlue, said in a statement that Fort Lauderdale airport has been important to the airline’s growth. JetBlue now serves more than 40 destinations from the airport, she said, 23 years after its first flight from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to Fort Lauderdale.

“We are thrilled to continue our work as an active partner [with Broward County aviation officials] on further expansion to increase capacity,” Geraghty said.

The terminal will be paid for through a variety of sources, including airport bonds backed by the airlines and $80 million in state grants from the Florida Department of Transportation, Gale said.

The additional terminal will have its own dedicated passenger screening, baggage screening and passenger baggage claim. There will be food and beverage operators, plus retail outlets in the terminal, but none of those plans are finalized. After the terminal is finished, an automated people mover could be added.

A two-level pedestrian bridge will connect the new Terminal 5 to Terminal 4, so that on one level passengers who’ve gone through security can go back and forth. People who have not cleared security can use the other level.

Also, the new terminal will connect to the adjacent Cypress parking garage. Passengers will be able to access the terminal from the airport’s main entrance and from Perimeter Road.

Gale said during terminal construction there will be “minimal disruption” to passengers coming and going to the airport’s four terminals.

Meanwhile, Broward County aviation officials and Spirit Airlines and JetBlue — the airport’s two biggest airlines with 28.2% and 20.2% passenger market share, respectively — had begun talking about the possibility of a new terminal before the pandemic emerged in early 2020.

“The desire to grow, particularly by JetBlue and Spirit, … was the impetus for why we embarked on it,” Gale said, of the early discussions about building another airport terminal.

Then in July 2022, Broward-based Spirit agreed to be acquired by JetBlue, in a $3.8 billion deal to create the fifth-largest U.S. airline. The U.S. Department of Justice continues reviewing the planned combination of the two airlines and eventually will approve or reject it.

Gale said it’s likely JetBlue and Spirit will have gates in the new airport terminal. However, those details aren’t finalized and will depend somewhat on whether federal regulators approve JetBlue’s purchase of Spirit. which employs about 3,400 people in South Florida.

In addition to those two leading airlines, Southwest, with a 14.2% market share, is the third-largest airline at Fort Lauderdale airport. The other major U.S. airlines — Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and American Airlines — also fly in and out of the airport. American is the top global airline and has the biggest market share at Miami International Airport.

Also, discount airlines Allegiant Air, Frontier Airlines and Avelo Airlines are increasing their presence at Fort Lauderdale airport.

“We believe those airlines may have an interest in growing in the future,” Gale said. “Our goal is to try to make sure we can provide a variety of airline services to the citizens of Broward County.”

Anthony Cordo, executive vice president of Visit Lauderdale, said a bigger airport means a boost in convention business and tourism in Broward County. The nearby convention center is also undergoing an expansion expected to be completed in late 2025.

“Terminal 5 gives us capacity to add new routes,” said Cordo, who attended Monday’s airport groundbreaking ceremony. “That is critical to getting the large-scale conventions we’re working to get.”
