  • 30 dead, hundreds injured in Israeli strike on Gaza, Hamas official reveals

A Hamas government official, Salama Marouf, on Wednesday, revealed that no fewer than 30 people have lost their lives, while hundreds were left injured as Israel struck the Gaza Strip with hundreds of air strikes overnight.

Marouf, who is the head of the government’s media office, also disclosed that many residential buildings, factories, mosques and shops were also hit.

The Israeli military also confirmed the strike, stating that the fighter jets destroyed advanced systems that Hamas used to detect military aircraft.

The Israeli force specifically struck 80 Hamas targets in the Beit Hanoun area of the North-Eastern Gaza Strip.

According to the military, this included two bank branches used by the Islamist group to “fund terrorism” in the enclave.

It also hit a weapons facility and an operational command centre used by the Islamic Jihad militant group.

  • Hamas beheaded Jewish babies, IDF says

A new report based on statements from the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) claims that the Iran-backed terrorist group, Hamas, beheaded Jewish babies during their attack on an Israeli community near Gaza.

In a video posted on X, a reporter with i24NEWS outlined what IDF soldiers are currently finding as they search through an Israeli community near the Gaza border to clear the area of explosives and remove the bodies of innocent civilians.

“It’s hard to even explain exactly just the mass casualties that happened right here,” an i24NEWS reporter said. “In fact, the Israeli military says they still don’t have a clear number, but I’m talking to some of the soldiers, and they say what they’ve witnessed as they’ve been walking through these different houses, these different communities… babies, their heads caught off. That’s what they said…Families completely gunned down in their beds.”

After detailing the atrocities that Israeli soldiers have found in the aftermath of the brutal Hamas terrorist attacks, the i24NEWS reporter pointed to IDF soldiers who were “comforting each other” as they processed the “sheer horror” of what took place.

Based on conversations with the IDF soldiers, the reporter explained that many of the soldiers were reserves who “jumped into action” after the Hamas attacks.

“They say they’ve never experienced anything like this,” she said. “This is nothing that anyone could have even imagined. When you’re walking through here, baby cribs thrown to the side, doors thrown wide open, still some Israeli bodies still here because the fighting in this community just ended.”

i24NEWS noted that many of the Israeli soldiers are continuing to go from “house to house, door to door” in order to clear the area of any remaining explosives.

“I see in the distance more bodies being covered,” the reporter added. “All the while, as they’re covering these Israeli bodies trying to evacuate everyone else from the territory, taking all the casualties out of here, it’s also littered with the bodies of terrorists.”

According to i24NEWS, one of the lead IDF commanders estimated that about 70 armed terrorists crossed over the Gaza border fence and attacked the Israeli community, as seen in the video. The Gaza border fence is located less than a quarter of a mile from the Israeli community shown in the i24NEWS video.

In a statement to i24NEWS on Tuesday, Israeli Major General Itai Veruv said, “You see the babies, the mothers, the fathers, in their bedrooms, in their protection rooms and how the terrorist kills them. It’s not a war, it’s not a battlefield. It’s a massacre, it’s a terror activity.”

Veruv explained that the brutal attacks carried out by Hamas terrorists are unlike anything he has seen before.

The Israeli general added, “It’s something that we used to imagine from our grandfathers, grandmothers in the pogrom in Europe and other places. It’s not something that happens in new history.”

  • Bayelsa Poll: Adeleke Rallies Support For Diri, Inaugurates Road In Yenagoa

    Ademola-Adeleke

Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has urged the people of Bayelsa State to vote for Governor Douye Diri and his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, in the November 11 governorship election, saying there was no need to change a winning team.

The Osun Governor stated that his Bayelsa counterpart had performed very well in delivering the dividends of democracy to the state in less than four years of his first tenure.

Adeleke spoke while inaugurating Section 4 of the Igbogene-AIT-Elebele Outer Ring Road in Yenagoa.

He contended that what Bayelsans needed in the governorship election was continuity, as his brother-governor had so far proved his worth among governors in the country.

“On November 11, come out and vote for the Miracle Governor. When you vote for him, you vote for prosperity, so Bayelsa will continue to grow from strength to strength,” Adeleke urged the people, according to a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, on Wednesday.

The Osun governor added, “That is why we are here to inaugurate this beautiful road. I know by the special grace of God, in his second term, he will do more.

“Democracy is at play here. Bayelsa will no longer be called a one-way-in and one-way-out state anymore.

“Like a football club, when the coach has a winning team, they cannot change him. So support him by going out there and vote for our Miracle Governor, and remember to protect your vote.”

Speaking earlier, Governor Douye Diri said completing the road project, initiated by his predecessor, Senator Seriake Dickson, fulfilled his promises to the people of the state.

He explained that the Igbogene-AIT-Elebele Outer Ring Road creates an alternative route in Yenagoa while opening up the state capital to robust infrastructure development.

“This project was initiated by the immediate past government of Senator Henry Seriake Dickson. Due to paucity of funds, the project could not go on as planned. So when we came on board, we re-awarded the project for over N11 billion, and this Section 4 is the second phase we are inaugurating.

“This road is subdivided into four sections. The Bauchi State governor inaugurated Section 1 during our second anniversary. Today, the Governor of Osun is inaugurating the fourth section.”

The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Moses Teibowei, in his remarks, noted that the 7.7 km-long section of the road, which was awarded to Lubrik Construction Company on January 4, 2021, runs across Opolo and Imiringi communities.

Teibowei stated that the road had a driveway of 7.5m with solar lights fully installed, adding that it would aid the delivery of goods and services to and fro the state capital as well as the Ogbia and Nembe local government areas of the state.

  • Lionel Messi could join Cristiano Ronaldo in Saudi as Pro League chiefs ‘plot loan move

Lionel Messi could join Cristiano Ronaldo in Saudi as Pro League chiefs

Lionel Messi could join Cristiano Ronaldo in Saudi as Pro League chiefs are ‘plotting a loan move for Inter Miami star.

After Inter Miami failed to qualify for the Major League Soccer playoffs, Messi won’t play until February following the completion of the regular season unless he secures a short-term loan elsewhere.

According to Sky Sports, via Marca, Saudi Pro League officials are set to launch an offer for Argentina’s World Cup-winning captain in the wake of Miami’s playoff heartbreak.

It is believed they are keen to lure him away from the MLS on a six-month loan, meaning he would be able to return to Inter in time for their 2024 campaign.

Internal evaluations are understood to be ongoing, with news on a potential swoop for Messi expected to come soon.

Before his historic move to Miami, Messi turned down an eye-watering financial package to play in Saudi, which would have brought him at least $400million.

But his arch-rival, Ronaldo put pen to paper on a $200m-a-year contract with Pro League team Al-Nassr at the start of the year.

  • How Five Suspects Died Within Two Days In Nigerian Police Cell In Imo State – RULAAC Petitions Inspector-General Over Ruthless Torture, Extrajudicial Killings By Policemen

The Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC), a civic group, has called on the Inspector-General of Police and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission (PSC), to bring to an end, alleged indiscriminate arrests, and extrajudicial killings of countless residents of Imo State by the anti-kidnapping unit, “Tiger Base” of the Imo State Police Command.

RULAAC made the call in a statement signed by its Executive Director, Okechukwu Nwanguma, citing an example of a man who was said to have recounted how on Sunday night, he and three other men with him in his car were intercepted, arrested and labelled members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) by the police in Imo.

The man was said to have narrated that they were taken to and detained at the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the Imo State Police Command located at Tiger Base where they were detained till the next morning.

“By the next morning, being Monday, 2 of the persons in the cell had died. By the night of the same Monday, 2 other cell mates had also died. By the next day, Tuesday, 1 person died.

“Worse of all, relatives of most of the people in the cell do not know their whereabouts and nobody comes for them. In few cases where relatives of detained persons find out and come to the base to inquire about them, the operatives would first deny or demand huge sums of money for ‘bail’.

“Before they negotiate bail with the relatives, they would first send the detainee’s name to the government house which will forward the name to the detainee’s local government and then to his community and political ward to ascertain if he’s a member of the APC before they will accept money to release him. This is happening daily in Imo State,” part of the RULAAC statement read.

RULAAC said the man further narrated that “On Monday morning, being the next day after we were arrested and detained, 2 boys arrested in Ehime Mbano were also brought to our cell. The boys narrated to us that they were walking along the road when, suddenly, they saw a police vehicle double cross them and police men alighted and ordered them into their vehicle and drove them straight to the Tiger Base, Owerri. No relatives knew about their arrest or their whereabouts.

“On Tuesday, a member of the Imo State House of Assembly (simply identified as Mola) who is my friend came to bail us. The operatives demanded N500,000 for each of us to be ‘bailed’.

“The member came for us because we were able to make calls before our phones were seized. Many others are languishing in the cell, starving and looking emaciated and dying in turns like infected chickens because their relatives do not know where they are.

“Prior to the visit by the State Assembly member, our relatives said they were expecting phone calls from the people who snatched us, whether they were kidnappers – to demand ransom, or police officers – to ask them to come and let them know what our offense was, if any, and what they intended to do.

“When the Assembly member came, he was asked if we were members of APC and he answered that we were (even though he knew we were not). He only said that to secure our bail because of our relationship. This was how we were released.

“Before we were released, I witnessed when a relative of one of the boys arrested from Ehime Mbano came and inquired about his relative from the operatives and they asked for his name which he gave but they denied having him in their custody even though they were actually with us in the cell.

“The day after we were released, I sent someone to go to Tiger Base and insist that his relation was with them. They eventually owned up and he was eventually released after a rigorous and tortuous process.

“Otherwise, he would have been dumped and abandoned to rot and die in the cell without anybody knowing his whereabouts and fate. This is how people are being killed on a daily basis at the Tiger Base, Owerri, Imo State.

“When we told them, during interrogation, that we were from Ekwerazu, Ahiazu Mbaise, they said ‘Oh, everybody in that area belongs to the ESN! And this explains their attitude and treatment of people who they arrest. They undressed us and searched our bodies for bodily marks which they use as a basis to label people ESN members.”

RULAAC further stated that on October 4, it received information from a woman identified as Chinyerem who said her husband is a borehole installer and a Keke Napep (tricycle) driver.

“She reported about her son whose whereabouts has been unknown after he was arrested by people she suspects are from the Tiger Base.”

RULAAC said it has contacted the Imo State Police PRO but he is yet to respond to its request on him to find out from Tiger Base

Citing many other cases, RULAAC called on the Chairman of Police Service Commission and the Inspector General of Police to “Order an investigation into the operations of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Tiger Base, Owerri, Imo State with a view to overhauling the operations of the unit and bringing its operations in line with Professional Policing Standards for responsible and accountable policing

“Investigate the conduct of the Commander and other operatives of the Unit, their involvement in human rights violations, corrupt practices, partisanship and other misconduct as well as the dereliction by the Commissioner of Police in carrying out oversight on the activities of the unit including ignoring complaints sent to him regarding specific misconduct by the Commander and other operatives of the unit

“Take appropriate disciplinary actions against those found responsible for human rights violations, corrupt practice, misconduct and dereliction of duty.”

RULAAC said that “If the Unit is not to be disbanded, ensure periodic inspection of the cells of the Unit to ensure that they do not remain concentration camps where human dignity ae violated and life terminated.”

  • Car owners to pay more for parking as Bi-Courtney hikes tariff at Lagos Airport

Users of Murtala Muhammed Airport Terminal Two (MMA2) may expect to pay more after the terminal’s owners, Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Limited, increased the cost of the terminal’s parking and lounge services on Tuesday.

According to BASL, the pricing review was made in light of the country’s new economic reality. The decision had long been delayed, in clear economic solidarity with airport terminal customers, despite its impending necessity for excellent and seamless operating goals.

The head of spaces and premises for BASL, Mr. Kola Bamigboye, was quoted by the airline’s spokesperson, Ajoke Yinka-Olawuyi, in a statement as saying that the new car park tariff structure will take into consideration car park users who spend less than 30 minutes within the Multi-storey Car Park facility, making it more convenient for users.

“These new tariffs will come into effect on the 1st November 2023 and will be available on our website also,” she added.

“Our car park tariffs have been revised to align with our ongoing efforts to maintain and upgrade the facilities, ensuring a safe and convenient parking experience for our valued passengers.”

The tariff adjustments will affect Car Park and VIP Lounge tariffs only and will be effective on November 1, 2023 with access fee to the VIP walk-in lounge raised by 33.3%.

For the lounge access fee, the Supervisor-In-Charge of Lounge Services at MMA2, Esther Ojeiwa, said in order to maintain top-notch services at the lounge, it has become necessary to upwardly review the access fee to the VIP walk-in lounge by 33.3 per cent.

Ojeiwa stated that the MMA2 VIP walk-in lounge is accessible to travellers seeking comfort and convenience, as it provides a serene environment to relax and unwind before boarding and take-off of scheduled flights.

“To further enhance the lounge experience, we have updated our lounge tariffs, offering even greater value for your money,” she added.

  • Rep. Tlaib has Palestinian flag in front of her office, front and center

A photo of a Palestinian flag being displayed outside Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s (D-Mich.) Capitol office has quickly drawn criticism in light of the recent horrific Hamas terrorist attacks against Israel.

The photo, shared by Reese Gorman, a Washington Examiner reporter, quickly amassed over 2 million views, triggering responses from U.S. lawmakers and citizens.

Tlaib, a member of the progressive “Squad” and a U.S. representative of Palestinian heritage, has frequently expressed her perspective on the conflict between Israel and Palestine. On Sunday, Tlaib labeled Israel an “apartheid” state.

“I grieve the Palestinian and Israeli lives lost yesterday, today, and every day. I am determined as ever to fight for a just future where everyone can live in peace, without fear and with true freedom, equal rights, and human dignity,” she wrote. “The path to that future must include lifting the blockade, ending the occupation, and dismantling the apartheid system that creates the suffocating, dehumanizing conditions that can lead to resistance.”

Tlaib’s months-long display of the Palestinian flag outside of her office on Capitol Hill comes as the world processes the devastating Hamas terrorist attacks against Israel, which claimed the lives of at least 900 Israelis, primarily civilians, according to The New York Post. The decision to continue displaying the Palestinian flag has generated backlash from other members of Congress.

In response to the news about a Palestinian flag still being featured outside of Tlaib’s office, Rep. Max Miller (R-Ohio) tweeted, “The halls of Congress belong to America. They should be reserved for flags that embody our great nation. The Palestinian flag should not have a place here. That’s why I sponsored an appropriations amendment to end this silliness.”

Rep. Tlaib has previously posted on social media about her Palestinian heritage, stating that while Palestinians may face restrictions in other countries, she proudly displayed the flag in her office.

In January, she tweeted, “Palestinians may be banned from flying their flag under an apartheid government, but we can still proudly do it at my office.”

  • I Will Flush Corrupt Civil Servants Out Of Works Ministry, Says Umahi

    dave-umahi

Two weeks after a disagreement between workers of the Ministry of Works and their Minister, Dave Umahi, the latter has threatened to deal with corrupt civil servants sabotaging his efforts at the ministry.

Umahi accused some of the civil servants of conniving with contractors to sabotage the government’s efforts.

He said those found guilty will be taken to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) for prosecution.

“There are some elements within that are also fighting me, who are also benefiting from the system and that is the greatest problem we have and I just pretended.

“I will flush those elements out and send them to ICPC to handle them because nobody can hold this country to ransom,” Umahi said during an interview with journalists in Abuja.

Recall that Umahi had alleged a gang-up against him by some major contractors over his decision to construct roads with concrete instead of asphalt.

This, according to Umahi, was the reason for the plots within the ministry to frustrate his efforts.

However, while speaking the minister said he has the support of the President, which according to him is the most important to carry out his ministerial duties.

He also said that some have keyed into the policy as major cement producers have agreed to discount prices for government road projects.

  • 104-year-old woman dies days after going skydiving to break Guinness World Record

104-year-old woman dies days after going skydiving to break Guinness World Record

Dorothy Hoffner, a 104-year-old Chicago woman who recently went skydiving to set a record, has died.

Hoffner died before being certified by Guinness World Records as the oldest person to ever jump from a plane.

Her close friend, Joe Conant, said she was found dead Monday morning, Oct. 9, by staff at the Brookdale Lake View senior living community. Conant said Hoffner apparently died in her sleep on Sunday night, Oct 8.

Conant, who is a nurse, said he met Hoffner — whom he called Grandma at her request — several years ago while he was working as a caregiver for another resident at the senior living center. He said she had amazing energy and remained mentally sharp

“She was indefatigable. She just kept going,” he said Tuesday, Oct. 10. “She was not someone who would take naps in the afternoon, or not show up for any function, dinner or anything else. She was always there, fully present. She kept going, always.”

On Oct. 1, Hoffner made a tandem skydive that could land her in the record books as the world’s oldest skydiver. She jumped out of a plane from 13,500 feet (4,100 meters) at Skydive Chicago in Ottawa, Illinois, 85 miles (140 kilometers) southwest of Chicago.

104-year-old woman dies days after going skydiving to break Guinness World Record

“Age is just a number,” Hoffner told a cheering crowd moments after landing. It was not her first time jumping from a plane — that happened when she was a spry 100 years of age.

Conant said he was working through paperwork to ensure that Guinness World Records certifies Hoffner posthumously as the world’s oldest skydiver, but he expects that will take some time. The current record was set in May 2022 by 103-year-old Linnéa Ingegärd Larsson of Sweden.

Conant said Hoffner didn’t skydive to break a record. He said she had so thoroughly enjoyed her first jump that she just wanted to do it again.

“She had no intention of breaking the record. And she had no interest in any publicity or anything. She wasn’t doing it for any other reason than she wanted to go skydiving,” he said.

Skydive Chicago and the United States Parachute Association celebrated Hoffner in a joint statement Tuesday, Oct. 10.

“We are deeply saddened by Dorothy’s passing and feel honored to have been a part of making her world-record skydive a reality.

“Skydiving is an activity that many of us safely tuck away in our bucket lists. But Dorothy reminds us that it’s never too late to take the thrill of a lifetime. We are forever grateful that skydiving was a part of her exciting, well-lived life,” they said.

Conant said Hoffner worked for more than four decades as a telephone operator with Illinois Bell, which later became AT&T, and retired 43 years ago. The lifelong Chicago resident never married, and Conant said she had no immediate family members.

A memorial service for Hoffner will be held in early November.

  • Nigerian govt plans to reduce taxes from 62 to nine —Oyedele

In case you missed it, an expert’s view on Nigeria’s revenue and tax systems

The Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, Mr Taiwo Oyedele, on Tuesday disclosed that the administration of President Bola Tinubu was working to reduce taxes from the current 62 to a maximum of nine, to create a more business-friendly environment in the country.

Oyedele compared Nigeria’s tax revenue of N15.194 trillion in 2022 to the equivalent of N78 trillion revenue of South Africa, with only 10 taxes in the same period.

He further stated that to achieve the tax reduction goal, administrative intervention and constitutional amendment would be required.
