  • I Doubt Maitama Hospital’s Claim That Nigerian Woman, Greatness, Wounded By ‘One-Chance’ Driver In Abuja, Was Brought In Dead – Women Affairs Minister

The Minister for Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy Ohanenye, has said Maitama General Hospital claimed that Greatness Olorunfemi, who was reportedly stabbed by a criminal in Abuja was brought in dead.

In a video posted by the minister on her X (formerly Twitter) handle, the matron of the hospital claimed that Greatness was brought in dead and that it was the reason why they declined to give her attention.

SaharaReporters had reported how Greatness bled to death after the Maitama General Hospital allegedly refused to treat her without a police report.

SaharaReporters learnt that the woman was stabbed by a ‘one-chance’ driver in Abuja when some Good Samaritans saw her and took her to the hospital but instead of treating her, the nurses on duty allegedly refused to attend to her.

But the women affairs minister, while giving an update on her visit to the hospital to unravel the circumstances that led to the death of Greatness, she said what happened to the deceased had become prevalent in Abuja.

She wrote, “Pursuant to an earlier resolve, I have stated categorically that the incident involving Miss Great Olorunfemi who was allegedly denied medical attention at Maitama General Hospital after being violently pushed out from a vehicle in motion by a “one chance” syndicate in the FCT cannot be swept under the carpet.

“During my surprise visit to the Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital, I made it clear that a follow-up is imperative on this matter. This issue has become a recurring decimal as many people with emergency cases are denied medical attention and they subsequently die.

“The life of every woman and child must be protected at all costs. The deceased wasn’t just a daughter, she was also a citizen of our dear country Nigeria and she was entitled to the protection of her fundamental human rights.

“I met the Matron in charge of the Accident and Emergency Unit, Mrs Habiba Musa who stated that the deceased was on Thursday, 26th September, brought in dead and was not denied medical attention. She added that her pulse was thready and her heart beat had stopped as at the time she was brought to the hospital.

“I was unconvinced by what I considered their alibi. I requested to see the Chief Medical Director, Dr. Igbinovia Imuentien whom I was told had gone for a meeting. I was informed of an independent panel of investigation sitting at the Health Secretariat. I moved to the venue of the said seating. There, the FCT Mandate Secretary, Health Services and Environment, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe informed me that an Independent Investigative Panel was set up for a thorough investigation of the incident.

“According to her, the panel consists of Non-governmental organizations, Civil Society Organisations, the Council of Nurses and other bodies with the terms of reference:- Investigation and discovering the true circumstances that led to the tragic death of the deceased.

“At my demand, the Mandate Secretary formally included the Youth Council of Nigeria in the Panel of Investigation. It was also announced that I will preside over another internally constituted panel that will also look into the death of the deceased.

“I addressed the panellists, commended the Mandate Secretary for the initiative and reiterated that it is high time Nigerians started doing things properly. It is high time we took the importance of human lives seriously. The paramedics whose duty it is to save lives must be active and responsive

“You will recall that Late Miss Great Olorunfemi was reportedly pushed out from a moving car believed to be a “one chance” car. The term “one chance car” is associated with cars used to rob unsuspecting passengers of their valuables.

“The deceased was reported to have sustained injuries and was rushed to Maitama General Hospital for medical attention but received no attention because there was no available Police Report.”

  • US Sec of State, Blinken, in Israel to show support after Hamas’ surprise attack

US Sec of State, Blinken, in Israel to show support after Hamas’ surprise attack

The US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, on Thursday, arrived in Israel on a trip that’s meant to show support following weekend’s unprecedented surprise attacks by Hamas.

Among other things, Blinken will seek the release of hostages including Americans kidnapped by Hamas fighters.

Blinken is also expected to urge restraint and seek safe passage for Gaza’s civilians ahead of a possible Israeli ground offensive.

Latest reports say at least 1,200 Israelis died in the attack, and over 1,100 Palestinians have died in air strikes on Gaza. Some 22 US citizens are also known to have died in Israel.

Hamas, designated a terrorist organisation by the US, took up to 150 people hostage when its fighters breached the border fence in several places in the Gaza Strip on Saturday and launched the most serious cross-border attack Israel has faced in a generation.

The US Secretary of State is also expected to meet Israeli President, Isaac Herzog on Thursday morning and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later in the day.

On Friday, he will meet Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas and Jordan’s King Abdullah in the Jordanian capital Amman.

US President Joe Biden earlier said he had made it clear to Netanyahu that Israel “must operate by the rules of war” in its response to Hamas’ attacks.

He, however, said Israel had a right and a duty to respond, and called the attacks an “act of sheer evil”.

Israel has said that a total blockade – including on food, fuel and other essentials – imposed on Gaza since the attacks would not be lifted until hostages are freed.

  • POS Agents ‘Steal’ Employer’s N942m In Lagos

Two Point of Sale (POS) agents on Thursday appeared before an Ebute-Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State, for allegedly stealing N942 million belonging to their employer.

The defendants – Chigozie Omeje, 26; and Irene Andrew, 29; whose addresses were not given, are facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, cybercrime and theft.

    They, however, pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, ASP Jimoh Joseph, told the court that the defendants and some others at large committed the offences in June and July at Odugunyan, Ikorodu, Lagos State.

Joseph alleged that the defendants conspired and used a POS machine to manipulate the security system to steal the money.

He said that while the defendants worked with their employer, Shago POS Terminals, they fraudulently transferred a total of N942 million to their personal bank accounts and other bank accounts.

Joseph said that the offences contravened Section 12 of the Cybercrime (Prohibition and Prevention) Act, 2015.

The prosecutor said that the offences were also punishable under Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs F. M. Kayode Alamu, admitted each of the defendants to bail in the sum of N1 million with two sureties.

She ordered that one of the sureties must be a blood relation of the defendant, adding that the sureties must show evidence of three years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

Alamu adjourned the case until Oct. 31 for mention.

  • Nigeria Anti-corruption Body, EFCC Probes Former Governors, Ex-Ministers, Recovers N12.7Billion From One Individual

Nigeria’s anti-corruption body, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it has recovered a combined sum of N27,184,357,524.52 and $19,084,419.33 from three different money laundering cases.

The agency disclosed that out of the N27.2 billion recovered, N12.7 billion was from one individual.

According to the commission, it is also investigating former governors, ex-ministers, and several government officials across the country.

The Acting EFCC Chairman, Abdukarim Chukkol, who disclosed this in Lagos, during a media interaction with select journalists, said further efforts were being made by the agency to recover more illicit funds.

According to ThisDay, he added that the agency would soon make public details of its ongoing investigations into the activities of some past leaders.

Chukkol, who was represented by the spokesperson for the commission, Dele Oyewale, said the anti-graft agency had received several petitions against former governors, ex-ministers and government officials.

The anti-graft agency is also carrying out ongoing investigations into some monumental procurement fraud involving some officials of the Federal Ministry of Power and the Ministry of Agriculture.

Oyewale said the anti-graft agency had seized several houses in the Federal Capital Territory, Lagos and Cross River states which are proceeds of funds meant for the Mambilla and Zungeru Power projects that were diverted through sundry Bureau de Change operators.

“In three different cases, the commission has recovered N27,184,357,524.52 and $19,084,419.33. While ongoing recovery is being made, the commission’s works are progressing in line with our mandate as prevention initiatives, risk assessments and recovery efforts are being intensified.

“Petitions were received in respect of several public officials, some of them former governors, some former ministers, and some ministry officials, and investigations are ongoing on those petitions; however, details of their involvements and our investigations will soon be made public.

“Also, investigations are ongoing in respect of monumental fraud involving some officials of the Federal Ministry of Power and Agriculture; procurement fraud actually. Funds meant for the Mambilla and Zungeru Power projects are diverted through sundry Bureau de Change operators. For now, several houses purchased with the funds are being recovered. The houses are in Abuja, Lagos and Cross River states,” Oyewale said.

Reminded that some former governors, who are now ministers in the current administration and current members of the National Assembly have allegations of fraud against them, the EFCC boss said investigations were ongoing.

He assured Nigerians that once investigations were concluded, those involved would be persecuted according to the laws of the land irrespective of the office they occupy.

Chukkol explained that the agency was focused more on preventing financial and economic crimes, noting that it was more cost-effective to do so.

“Considering the cost involved in investigating and prosecuting financial crimes and their perpetrators, it is better we prevent them from happening. As a result, EFCC is intensifying its focus on its preventive mandate. We shall be doing more in the area of public enlightenment and more jingles among others,” he said.

  • PenCom Has Made Life After Retirement Enjoyable For RSA Account Holders -NECA

The Nigeria Employers Consultative Association on Thursday hailed the National Pension Commission for the proactive manner in which the commission is implementing the Pension Reforms Act of 2014.

The association stated that the Commission has made life after retirement enjoyable for Retirement Savings Account holders under the Contributory Pension Scheme.

The Director-General of NECA, Mr Adewale Smatt Oyerinde said these at the opening session of the PenCom/NECA interactive session on the Contributory Pension Scheme for the Organized Private Sector.

The objectives of the interactive session which was held in Abuja include enlightening the OPS on the workings of the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), sharing thoughts on emerging developments in the Nigerian pension space and providing an opportunity for Pension Operators to interact with the members of the OPS among others.

He said before 2014, life after was uncertain and unpredictable, adding that with the Pension Reform Act 2014, the narration has changed significantly.

He pledged the association’s support to PenCom in growing the pension industry in Nigeria, adding that this is one of the viable ways to further develop the Nigerian economy.

The NECA Boss said, “Before 2014, life after retirement could be described as uncertain and unpredictable. However, with the Pension Reform Act 2014, the narration has changed significantly.

“Significantly because no matter the efforts put into a system or process, there will always be room for improvement. Thus, following the enactment of the Act and with successive PenCom leadership, we have had series of improvements and innovation in the administration of the Pension Scheme.

“The Private sector remain committed to the success of the Pension Scheme as long as our concerns are not only noted but also addressed expeditiously.”

In her opening remarks at the event, the Director-General of PenCom, Mrs Aisha Dahir-Umar commended NECA for offering its platform for continuous social dialogue with the members of the OPS on the implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme in Nigeria.

These social dialogues, according to her, have generated an invaluable impact on the implementation of the CPS over the years.

The PenCom DG described the pension industry as one of the fastest-growing financial sectors in Nigeria, adding that at the end of the third quarter of 2023, the number of RSAs under the CPS stood at 10 million and the size of the pension Asset Under Management amounted to N16.76 trillion.

She said, “The Commission has continued to take giant strides towards ensuring the smooth implementation of the CPS through the revision of existing regulations and guidelines and the development of new ones.

“Specifically, the Commission deployed the Enhanced Contributors Registration System (ECRS) for the pension industry. Following, the deployment of the ECRS, the Commission also introduced the Data Recapture Exercise (DRE), which mandatorily requires all RSA holders who joined the CPS prior to the 1st of July 2019 to update their information with their respective Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs).

“Accordingly, the Commission has consistently urged RSA holders to approach their PFAs for Data Recapture.”

In order to facilitate the implementation of Section 13 of the PRA 2014 which allows an RSA holder to transfer his/her RSA from one PFA to another at least once in a year, Dahir-Umar explained that the Commission developed and deployed the RSA Transfer System (RTS) in 2020.

The RTS is a computer-based application for initiating, processing, and monitoring the RSA Transfer process.

It also ensures the seamless transfer of RSAs from one PFA to another. Among others, the PenCom DG said the opening of the RSA transfer window has continued to improve the quality of service delivery by the PFAs.

To ensure that RSA holders own a house during their work life, the Commission, she added has released the Guidelines on Accessing Retirement Savings Account (RSA) Balance towards Payment of Equity Contribution for Residential Mortgage by RSA Holders.

She said, “Members of the OPS would recall that following the enactment of the PRA, the Commission was saddled with the responsibility of supervising the transfer of the Nigerian Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) contributions of employees into their respective RSAs under the CPS.

“To date, contributions worth N10.20 billion have been transferred to the RSAs of 142,486 NSITF Scheme contributors. Thus, in order to ensure that all contributors under the NSITF Scheme have their NSITF contributions transferred to their RSAs, the Commission had severally featured advertorials in National Dailies requesting NSITF contributors to apply for the transfer of their contributions.

“The Commission wishes to implore all employers to encourage their employees who have contributed to the NSITF Scheme to liaise with their PFAs and in particular Trustfund Pensions for guidance on how to have their contributions transferred to their RSAs.”

She added that the Commission will always support NECA to champion programmes that will ensure the successful implementation of the CPS in Nigeria.
