  • Supreme Court Dismisses SDP Gov Candidate, Gbagi’s Appeal Against Delta Governor, Oborevwori

The Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal brought before it by the Delta State governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) Kenneth Gbagi challenging the election of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

The apex court described the appeal as “a waste of time, mere academic exercise, and lacking any utilitarian value”.

Gbagi had filed an appeal against the decision of the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal and Court of Appeal to refuse to admit fresh evidence not pleaded during trial.

He had claimed to have discovered new evidence to prove his petition, even after making an application for the reopening of his case on the date fixed for adoption of final written addresses by the Governorship Election Tribunal sitting in Asaba, the state capital.

The tribunal had dismissed the aforesaid application for being incompetent, belated and strange as the document he was trying to introduce was not pleaded in his petition.

The tribunal proceeded to conclude the hearing of the petition and found that Gbagi’s claim that he won the election was totally unfounded. The tribunal also dismissed Gbagi’s claim that Governor Oborevwori, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in the March 18, 2023 governorship election was not qualified to contest the election.

Not satisfied with the tribunal’s ruling, Gbagi filed an appeal at the Appeal Court against the tribunal’s refusal to accept his belated application to reopen his case.

The Court of Appeal, however, dismissed his appeal and held that the tribunal was right to have refused to reopen his case.

Still not satisfied, Gbagi proceeded to the Supreme Court to appeal the judgement of the lower court.

PDP’s counsel, Ekeme Ohwovoriole, SAN, and Ayo Asala, SAN for Governor Oborevwori had argued that the appeal lacked merit because the tribunal had been dissolved.

In a unanimous judgment of the apex court on Thursday, delivered by Justice John Inyang Okoro, the apex court held that the appeal was a complete waste of time, had become spent, academic and lacking usefulness.

The apex court held that the 180 days allowed for hearing the petition had expired and that there was no tribunal to even hear the appeal since the tribunal had since been dissolved.

  • Tinubu approves creation of Civil Service Commission for FCT

President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of the Civil Service Commission for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to allow career progression for civil servants in the FCT Administration.

The Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, disclosed this to journalists on Friday in Abuja.

He said the National Assembly passed a Bill for the establishment of CSC for the FCT and was signed by former Vice President Yemi Osibanjo in 2018.

Wike said: “So, I wrote a Memo to Mr. President. I say, you have a renewed hope agenda; civil servants in FCT are suffering; they have lost hope.

“They are not committed to work. Why should I be working because, at the end of the day, I can’t get to the apex of my career? As such, we must implement that 2018 law as passed by the National Assembly.

“If there are challenges, of course, there is no law that is perfect. You can only know the challenges when you start implementing.

“So, let’s implement, whatever the challenges are, then we can begin to talk of how we can amend it

“I can tell you authoritatively that Mr. President has given the approval for the establishment of the Civil Service Commission for the FCTA.”

  • Harvard anti-Israeli letter led by perfume icon’s son: Report

British perfume magnate Jo Malone’s son is reportedly one of three Harvard Undergraduate Palestine Solidarity Committee student leaders who helped publish a letter earlier this week blaming Israel for the devastating Hamas terrorist attacks against the Jewish people.

According to The Daily Mail, Malone’s son, 22-year-old Josh Wilcox, is studying Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at Harvard, with a specialization in Arabic. Wilcox is also a member of Harvard’s fencing team.

As one of three reported leaders of the Undergraduate Palestine Solidarity Committee, Wilcox has published at least three articles through the Harvard Crimson in support of Palestine, including “To the Editor: When Will You Stop Silencing Palestine?” in February.

According to The New York Post, Wilcox wrote an op-ed in January that criticized Harvard Kennedy School for offering a fellowship to Amos Yadlin, who formerly served as a senior officer in the Israel’s military. Wilcox blasted Harvard for “welcom[ing] agents of colonial violence.”

READ MORE: 31 Harvard groups blame Israel for Hamas killing 700 civilians

Last Saturday, 31 Harvard student organizations, including the Undergraduate Palestine Solidarity Committee, released a letter blaming Israel for the terrorist attacks committed by Hamas, saying, “The apartheid regime is the only one to blame. Israeli violence has structured every aspect of Palestinian existence for 75 years. From systematized land seizures to routine airstrikes, arbitrary detentions to military checkpoints, and enforced family separations to targeted killings, Palestinians have been forced to live in a state of death, both slow and sudden.”

Malone, who was the founder and owner of Jo Malone before selling the perfume company to Estee Lauder in 1999, provided a statement to The Daily Mail in response to the violence against Israel; however, she refused to address her son’s involvement in the Harvard student group’s controversial letter.

“We as a family are heartbroken by the events of recent days and strongly condemn all forms of violence. The abhorrent attack on innocent people on Saturday in Israel is beyond what any family should endure,” Malone said. “We again strongly condemn all forms of violence and those that incite it. We have always acted with a heart for people wanting always to strive towards a peaceful solution to any conflict.”

Malone described the Hamas attacks against Israel as a “horrendous moment” in history that has resulted in “innocent people” being forced to pay “the greatest price with their lives.” Malone called for the “utterly heartbreaking” situation to be brought to an end.

“As a family our hearts goes out to all those suffering terrible losses at this time and we send untold gratitude to all those selflessly risking their lives for others,” she added. “We call upon all leaders to find a humanitarian resolution for all.”

According to The Daily Mail, Malone emphasized that her statement to the news outlet would be the only comment she would make regarding the violent events in Israel.

The Managing Director of Shariff Agric and General Service in Jos, one Ibrahim Abubakar, was on Friday, 6th October, 2022 arrested by the operatives of the Gombe Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Abubakar was arrested for allegedly stealing the sum of N57,550,000.00, an amount erroneously paid into his company’s account.

According to EFCC in a press release by the Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, when the money dropped in the account of Shariff Agric and General Services, the suspect diverted it for his own use.

EFCC said: “Baker Drilling Service allegedly transferred the sum of N57,550,000.00 into the account of Shariff Agric and General Services, instead of Bluemoe Trade & Service.  Both accounts are domiciled in the United Bank for Africa respectively.

“After the bank alerted Abubakar of the wrong posting into his company’s account, he allegedly transferred the sum of N5,000,000.00 each to his personal account in UBA and Keystone banks respectively.

“Subsequent attempts made to withdraw the remaining amount led to his arrest. He will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.”

    ifeanyi ubah

The Young Progressives Party (YPP) has reacted to the reason given by Senator Ifeanyi Ubah’s for his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The reaction came from Mr Egbeola Wale-Martins, the YPP National Publicity Secretary, during a press briefing on Friday in Abuja.

He said that the defection of Ubah to the APC was not due to irreconcilable differences, saying that Ubah shouldn’t have left when he ought to be helping to consolidate the gains of the party at the 2023 general elections.

“The news making the rounds on the defection of Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah to the All Progressives Congress (APC) is unfortunate, especially at a time when we should be consolidating on our gains in the just concluded general election.

“We ought to be building a formidable opposition to challenge the reckless ruling party responsible for the several woes currently being faced by Nigerians.

“Ubah may have defected to the APC for a number of reasons, but irreconcilable differences within the party is definitely not one of it.

“And there is no need crying wolf where there is none,” he said.

Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, representing Anambra South, under the Young Progressive Party, had switched his allegiance to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The announcement of his defection was conveyed in a letter directed to the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, and publicly read in the Senate Chamber on Thursday.

Ubah, who had been elected for a second term under the YPP in the previous elections, according to the letter, said his reason for switching parties was due to the insurmountable disagreements within the party.

  • Nnamdi Kanu Should Be Enjoying The Same Freedom As Igboho, Says Ejimakor

The continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, is the handiwork of the Presidency, and not the Supreme Court, Kanu’s special counsel, Barr Aloy Ejimakor, said on Friday.

Kanu is being detained at the custody of the Department of State Service in Abuja since 2021 when he was arrested in Kenya and forcefully brought to Nigeria. He is charged with running a proscribed group, treason and jumping bail. Nigeria’s Appeal Court last year discharged and acquitted him, but the then president Muhammadu Buhari refused to release him.

The federal government appealed for stay of execution, and the Supreme Court has fixed December 15, 2023 for the hearing of Kanu’s case after many adjournments.

According to Ejimakor, “The persisting incarceration of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has become more unsustainable with the release of Sunday Igboho, especially as it was done with the support of Yoruba leaders and Tinubu (@officialABAT). To be sure, it’s the Presidency that is holding #MNK, not the Supreme Court.”

Igboho is leading the agitation for the independence of the Yoruba nation, and was arrested last year in Benin Republic. He recently regained his freedom.

Opinions point towards the fact that Igboho’s release was facilitated by the Yoruba nation, including President Bola Tinubu.

“Kanu has a similar case as Igboho, but you can see how Igboho’s case was managed by the Yoruba nation,” Maxwell Eze, an Igbo activist, said.

He added, “Igboho was not extradited to Nigeria the same way Kanu was extradited from Kenya. And Igbo leaders are just watching.”

THE WHISTLER had reported that Ohanaeze Ndigbo, during the 2023 Igbo Day celebration in Enugu, appealed to President Tinubu to release Kanu, maintaining that Kanu has not being found guilty of any offence to warrant his continued detention since 2021.

  • When the children have been weaponised against their father” Gideon Okeke writes about the father-son relationship and says it is “contingent on the mother

"When the children have been weaponised against their father" Gideon Okeke writes about the father-son relationship and says it is "contingent on the mother"

Gideon Okeke is speaking out again months after crying out that he can’t have unrestricted access to his sons until they are 18.

In a new Instagram post, the actor said there are three phases in a father’s relationship with his son.  He added that this relationship is “contingent on the mother” and the sons can be “weaponised against their father”.

He then called on sons to try to humanise their fathers. He also called on “Pharaoh” to let his people go.

This is not the first time Gideon is making a post like this.

In Jan 2023, Gideon Okeke cried out after the court granted his ex-wife custody of their children and ruled that the actor is only allowed to see his kids at the place where they reside and can’t take them out.

Gideon wrote at the time: “When I think of my 18year jail sentence I remember even people on death row get 3 visitations as part of the last living rights and the choice of a planned meal before their execution. people serving life, get visitation even leading up to a conjugal. These are rights laid out for the ones who have wronged society. Whose rightful place is in the gallows.

“But parental alienation and depravation is an ill punishments upon a father who wants to be there for his sons. But by the Federal Government of my kids affairs… I don’t get custody and yet my visitation rights are restricted, ONLY with the 4 corners of their compound. As in I cant even take them for ICE CREAM.

“A marriage went south. this is MY L in Lesson.”

Then, in April 2023, he called out single mothers who prevent their kids from seeing their fathers.

    He wrote: “Dear single Mother,

“You didn’t pluck those kids from the trees.

“You didn’t buy them off the shelves at

Shoprite. It took 2 of you, in love, to have the privilege of the legacy of Kids, in your life.

“People go a whole lifetime without this blessings you have on your laps. They are a gift from God. Being an ONLY child myself…

“I can tell U what women go through to find this gift… for free…by God’s grace.

“Why you con Dey use this same gift take Dey punish another Man. Or so you thought you were punishing Him. But no! It’s the KIDS

“Get out of the Way. You’re in the way of Your kids emotional balance. You’re in the way!”

At the time, his ex-wife Chidera Uduezue  responded, “If I start to talk! Hmmmmm..

“There will be no holding back.

“Because the millipede that was stomped on did not scream, but the foot that stomped on it keeps screaming ‘my foot, my foot'(it’s sweeter in Igbo sha, but, you get the gist lol).
