  • Falana Reveals How NASS Can Urgently Address Education Needs Of 18.5 million Out-Of-School Children

A Human Rights lawyer, Femi Falana Sunday, explained how the National Assembly can urgently address the basic education needs of about 18.5 million out-of-school children in Nigeria.

Falana in a statement lamented that lawmakers have been making needless resolutions that have not translated to promotion of universal access to basic education.

Falana opined that since each of the 36 States of the Federation have adopted the Child’s Rights Act and enacted a Child’s Right Law, it is the joint responsibility of the Federal, State and Local Governments to ensure that every Nigerian child is given access to free and compulsory education.

He noted, however, that relevant laws have been breached by stakeholders because the members of the political class drawn from all registered political parties have not demonstrated any commitment to the education of every child in Nigeria.

“Hence, the members of the legislative and executive organs of governments have allegedly failed to appreciate the danger of having 18.5 million out-of-school children, the highest number in the world,” Falana stated.

In view of this, the senior lawyer called for Constitution amendment to urgently fix the loopholes negatively affecting basic education in Nigeria.

He added, “What the National Assembly should do instead is address the refusal of state governments to make counterpart contributions to the Universal Basic Education Fund pursuant to section 2 of the Compulsory Free Universal Basic Education Act.

“As a matter of urgency, the National Assembly should ensure the amendment of the Constitution to empower the Accountant-General of the Federation to deduct from the source the counterpart fund payable by every state government to the Universal Basic Education Fund,” he stated.

  • NAF kills suspected terrorists in Borno, Zamfara air raids

The Air Components of Operations Hadin Kai and Hadarin Daji on Saturday killed several suspected terrorists during air strikes in the Northern part of the country.

The Nigeria Air Force Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, confirmed the development in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

He said the troops in the early hours of Saturday carried out air interdiction missions at a newly identified terrorists’ hideout at Bukar Meram, near the Lake Chad region of Borno State.

The spokesman added that the strikes followed reports on the recent relocation of terrorists from Suwa to the Bukar Meram general area.

According to him, air strikes were authorised at the location in Bukar Meram to decimate the terrorists.

Gabkwet said: “Feedback received after the strikes revealed the expected outcome was achieved as several terrorists were neutralised while over 40 motorcycles and six gun trucks were destroyed.

“Similar air strikes were carried out on terrorists on October 11 by the Air Component of Operation Haradin Daji around the Sangeko axis of Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara.

“Terrorists who were in a convoy of about 70 motorcycles on the road track from Kabaro towards Sangeko were subsequently engaged with several neutralised, their motorcycles destroyed, and others injured.”

  • Varsity warns students to vacate off-campus residences on outskirts of Gusau

Federal University Gusau on Sunday warned students resident in the off-campus area of Damba on the outskirts of Gusau to relocate and be safe from bandits.

In a statement by the university’s spokesperson, Umar Usman, the varsity advised the students to relocate to the Gusau metropolis or Sabon Gida area, now well secured by armed security operatives.

The admonition followed Saturday’s kidnap of four students from their off-campus residence at Damba.

Troops of Operation Hadarin Daji and those of Metro Joint Patrol (Eagle Eye) have,  however, rescued all four students.

Mr Usman stated that students living on the outskirts of Gusau, especially those in Damba, were more vulnerable to bandits’ attacks.

Abductors took 25 students of the university and nine construction workers on the outskirts of Gusau on September  21. Twelve of the victims are still in captivity.

  • North Korean journalists use status and travel freedom to cash-in

This article was originally published by Radio Free Asia and is reprinted with permission.

Reporters for North Korea’s state-run Rodong Sinmun newspaper are increasingly using their status and freedom to travel for economic gain, obtaining rice and other food in exchange for favorable stories, residents in the country told Radio Free Asia.

Some journalists have even gotten involved in buying and selling gold, letting their newsgathering take a back seat, the sources said.

The Rodong Sinmun is an organ of the ruling Korean Workers’ Party and the most widely-read publication in the country. Its reporters are accorded prestige and freedom that most of their fellow citizens are not, and some exploit that to make money that will offset their low salaries.

“Reporters of the Rodong Sinmun, who enjoy high status as the party’s trumpeters, are now looking for subjects that they can do business with … rather than just writing good articles,” a resident of Pyongyang told RFA Korean on condition of anonymity for security reasons.

While travel for ordinary citizens is restricted, reporters can go practically anywhere thanks to a government-issued travel pass.

“If you show this travel pass, the authorities will not be able to control you,” a South Pyongan resident said. “Some reporters buy gold in Hoechang County, a gold mining area, under the pretext of reporting. They then make money illegally by selling the gold to China through the border area of Sinuiju.”

    Supplementing one’s income

In the past, some Rodong Sinmun reporters were able to offer writing a favorable story to factory or farm managers in exchange for food or goods, sources said.

But ever since the North Korean economy collapsed in the mid-1990s, salaries from government-assigned jobs are nowhere near enough to live on. The 3,500 won (42 US cents) reporters receive per month is enough to buy only 600 grams of rice at the marketplace.

It is now a matter of survival for the reporters to think about how they stand to gain money from a story, rather than whether the story actually serves the public. Some reporters even leave the writing out of it, and use their travel privileges to trade commodities, the sources said.

The path to becoming a Rodong Sinmun reporter is very narrow.

Candidates must be chosen from the best and brightest at top universities, with impeccable academic records, and they must even come from families that have demonstrated unwavering loyalty to the state for several generations.

Two years after they are sent to work at the paper, they must take an exam to become a “level five,” or entry level, reporter. From there they can hope for promotion to level four within a few years. Then for the most skilled reporters, subsequent promotions to levels three, two, and one may follow.

But the life of a reporter at North Korea’s biggest newspaper is anything but glamorous, the resident said.

“The reporter I know is a level four reporter who has been working at the industry department of the Rodong Sinmun for 7 years. But his family is so poor that they don’t even have enough rice and meat soup on holidays,” she said.  “Rodong Sinmun reporters receive food rations, but food for their families is not normally distributed.”

She explained that the reporter normally supports his family by traveling through the country to visit factories and receive favors or goods from each factory’s management.

“But these days the factories are not operating properly due to the lack of materials and fuel,” the resident said. “So even if the reporter writes a good article about the factory, like reporting that the factory was self-reliant, it would do nothing to help the reporter’s bottom line.”

    The lucrative farming beat

Due to the downturn in the economy, reporters in the factory beat want to switch to the collective farming beat, the resident said.

“They all hope to become agricultural reporters,” she said. “When a reporter from the agriculture department goes out to cover a cooperative farm, the management committee chairperson and work team leaders usually give the reporter about 20 kilograms (44 lbs.) of rice, red pepper powder, and other ingredients in a backpack.”

Reporters also want to be assigned to cover the moneyed elites, because it has become customary for the rich to bribe journalists with US$100 bills in exchange for reports that can cast them in a good image and help expand their business networks, she said.

Those who get involved in trading gold often get consumed by that endeavor, while journalism becomes less important.

“Until a few years ago, reporters tried to gain honor … raising their status by publishing more good articles to promote the party’s policies.” she said. “These days, some reporters worry more about making money than reporting, saying that as their status increases, they only have to write more propaganda articles.”

Reporters who have been recognized for their outstanding contributions as deemed by the party are given the title of People’s Reporter and Meritorious Reporter, and in the past, this was seen as the highest honor. But sources said that these days the number of reporters who deviate from the party’s ideology is increasing.

  • What Is In A Name?

    Nwando-Aligwekwe

When a name is given by the Igbos in Nigeria to a newborn baby, the name usually has a meaning. It may have to do with circumstances surrounding the birth of that child, a name one has heard before that has a meaning they relate to or prophetic words into the life of that child.

My first name means “All things belong to God” and my middle name means “A child is a shade/covering”. I imagine that the second name was born of prophetic words from my parents

Did you know that the names of God all have meaning? Each is relevant to the different situations that you could find yourself in. He is Elohim, our creator. He made the heavens and the earth and all that is in it.

He created us and knows every intricate part of us. He is El Elyon, the Mighty God, El-Shaddai, the Almighty. He is bigger than all the situations, circumstances and problems you have in your life. Everything pales in comparison to the presence of God. There is no one like Him nor is there any that could ever begin to compare with Him.

He is El-Roi, the God who sees. He sees your tears, He knows you by name, and even more than that, the Bible says He saves those tears in His bottle. He is Jehovah Raah, our shepherd. Guiding us like a shepherd does, asking us to just listen to Him and follow Him.

He is Abba, our Father. He is not just God, He is our Daddy, loving us so much more than we can ever imagine. He is Jehovah Jireh, our provider, able to provide us with more than we can ever imagine or ask for in our wildest dreams. He is Jehovah Rapha, our healer. There is no disease God cannot heal.

He is Jehovah Nissi, our banner, our victory. He had already won it all when Jesus died on the cross. He is Jehovah Shammah, He is there. Present with us. Never leaving us or forsaking us. In fact, He said He has engraved us in the palms of His hands.

Would you want God to manifest in your life in all these ways His names show that He can and is eager to? You just need to ask Him. He is eager to have a close relationship with you. Just ask Him today. He awaits your call, for you to invite Him in. I pray that you take that bold step today. It’s the best thing you could ever do in this life.

  • ‘He’ll Be Killed Without Trace And You Won’t See Him Again’ –Rogue Nigerian Policemen Allegedly Tell Wife Of Businessman Who Was Brutalised, Extorted In Cross Rivers

A businessman, Uduak Akpan Sunday has narrated how he was allegedly brutalised by policemen attached to the Cross River State Police Command over an offence the security personnel reportedly failed to disclose.

According to Sunday, the officers led by one Ibrahim Mohammed Adamu arrested him in front of his house around 6 a.m. on Saturday.

The businessman told SaharaReporters that he was beaten with a machete, handcuffed and treated by the policemen like a criminal.

Sunday said despite not finding anything incriminating evidence on him, his wife was called on the phone and forced to send N11,000 to an OPay account belonging to the police team leader, Ibrahim Mohammed Adamu with account number: 8021025969 before he was released.

He said, “Some policemen from the Cross River State command, Calabar on an illegal raid brutalized me and extorted me and others. They were led by one Ibrahim Adamu,” he told SaharaReporters.

“Adamu and his team members came into my compound yesterday morning, 14th of October 2023, around 6 a.m. where I sell borehole water. Exactly in front of my gate, they saw me and brutalized me. They used a machete on me then forced me into their car and drove off to their station.

“Reaching there, Adamu personally used my phone to call my wife to transfer money to his bank account, he threatened her that if the money wasn’t transferred, then my wife would not see me again, that I would be killed without any trace. My wife then transferred N11,200 to his Opay account before he released me.

“He released me without any record of any kind, no statement at the station, they just bundled me and others behind the bar without doing anything. I don’t even know the crime I committed for me to be beaten and extorted.

“They have made it difficult for people to go out in peace. I need justice, the Inspector General of Police and police commissioner should come to our rescue.

“Innocent people going on the street are being arrested by policemen in Cross Rivers.”

Efforts made by SaharaReporters to reach Adamu were not successful as he did not answer his phone when our reporter called him. He also did not reply to a WhatsApp message sent to him even though the double grey ticks of the messenger changed to blue, suggesting the message had been read.

This comes a few hours after the spokesperson of the Nigeria Police Force, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said police personnel who trot guns at Nigerians in order to extort them are not different from armed robbers.

A crypto trader and influencer on X (formerly Twitter), had criticised the police after his house was allegedly broken into and his subsequent arrest.

The man claimed the policemen broke into his estate wearing mufti and without any search warrant. He said they took all the men who lived there to the station, questioned them and claimed that they were internet fraudsters.

He provided debit alerts showing the money that was allegedly taken from him and stated that they collected a total of N500,000 from all the men in his estate.

Reacting, a user tagged the Force PRO saying, “As PRO of Nigeria Police Force do something to this dirty stuff you mate always do everyday. Police are your friend indeed”

Responding, Adejobi said: “I think we need to get some things clear here. He insisted on seeing a lawyer, and he slept in the cell. Did the lawyer come? Was the money paid in the presence of his lawyer? If the lawyer didn’t come, why didn’t you call someone. Or was your phone taken away from you? He needs to clarify certain things here. Whether police are your friend or your enemy, what was the role your lawyer played.”

In his reaction, another X user shared screenshots of an old comment by the Force PRO, where he condemned extortion by the police.

“You know why I like you, you dey quick forget something. Ire o,” the user had captioned the post.

Replying, Adejobi made further clarification on the issue.

He said, “Yes, this still stands. Any armed policeman or security operative who forcefully extorts an innocent Nigerian is as good as an armed robber. Extortion is never part of any agencies mandate, either armed or not. We condemn such, and even the IGP has made it clear.

“The IGP has warned officers not to drop his name to extort or dupe Nigerians and not to take any gift to him. We made an official statement to this effect. You need to read and comprehend comments before you pass any judgement or make condemnation here.

“My comment was clear enough. Must we continue to pay these erring policemen? Are we going to continue this way? In fact, when i read in his tweet that he resisted, i was happy, but he could have resisted till d end. He was with them in the station premises.

“He was not on the road. No one supported the extortion, but he shouldn’t have paid them after his initial moves and resistance. I think my assertion is clearer to you now. Thanks.”

  • Peseiro should forget Maduka Okoye, Francis Uzoho, turn to NPFL for goalkeepers: Ex-Super Eagles player

Ex-international Taiwo Oloyede has advised the Super Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro, to turn to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) for players to solve the team’s goalkeeping problem.

Oloyede, a former stationary stores captain, advised in an interview while reacting to the performance of the Super Eagles in recent friendly matches.

Super Eagles on Friday drew 2-2 with the Green Falcons of Saudi Arabia in a friendly match played in Portugal.

A goalkeeping howler by Super Eagles goalkeeper Francis Uzoho gifted the Falcons their first goal, which many pundits have since termed an unacceptable performance.

Oloyede, who played for the Super Eagles from 1994 to 1996, however, contended that the two goalkeepers in the camp of the Super Eagles were not good enough.

“The winless situation of our national team is worrisome. We keep on re-circulating players that are out of their prime.

“The goalkeeping errors and instability are a bad omen for Nigeria. I don’t know why the coach insisted on calling those goalkeepers. I think he should forget about them.

“Peseiro should forget about Maduka Okoye and Francis Uzoho because we have better goalkeepers in the NPFL,” he said.

He explained that great goalkeepers were discovered from the Nigerian league in the past, “I don’t know why it’s difficult for Peseiro to retrace his steps.

“Inviting a goalkeeper like Uzoho, who is always on bench in his club, while a 35-year-old is a regular in the same club tells a story that he is not good enough.”

Oloyede, who started his career with IBWA and played for Rangers, BCC Lions of Gboko, Shooting Stars, Sunshine Stars and First Bank of Lagos, claimed that Peseiro had failed to use the friendly matches to get new players.

“Those friendly matches are good opportunities to test new players, and not inviting those that have not performed well before hoping that they would have improved.

“The Super Eagles coach should invite new players or mix the newly invited with the old ones. I am sure we have better players around who can fill in the gap when the regulars are absent.

“If Osimhen is not fit or Iheanacho is not around, we should have a replacement for him. We should be able to build a formidable team from the friendly matches,” he said.

The Super Eagles return to the field in Portugal on Monday for another friendly match against Mozambique.
