  • BREAKING: Senators Akpabio, Ndume In Shouting Match, Heated Exchange Over Conduct Of Senate President

Nigeria’s Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the Chief Whip of the 10th Senate, Senator Ali Ndume were engaged in a shouting match and heated exchange of words on Tuesday.

SaharaReporters learnt that the shouting row between the two senate leaders was over the conduct of Senator Akpabio, which does not sit well with some of his colleagues.

However, SaharaReporters could not establish the specific conduct of Mr Akpabio that led to the shouting match between the two principal officers of the Senate.

“Ndume and Akpabio are in a shouting match and exchange of words in a closed-door executive session over the conduct of Senator Akpabio. Senators are divided on this. Arguments and counter arguments going on,” one of the senators told SaharaReporters.

Ndume is the senator representing Borno South senatorial district since 2011. He was a member of the House of Representatives of Nigeria from 2003 to 2011.

Akpabio is the 15th president of the Nigerian Senate. He served as Senator representing Akwa Ibom North-West Senatorial District from 2015 to 2019 and since 2023.

Akpabio was also the Minister for Niger Delta Affairs from 2019 to 2022. He previously served as governor of Akwa Ibom State from 2007 to 2015.

Only on Monday, a sacked Nigerian senator from Adamawa State, Senator Elisha Abbo, representing Adamawa North senatorial district, accused Senate President Akpabio of being behind the nullification of his election at the Court of Appeal.

SaharaReporters had earlier reported that the Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja on Monday sacked Senator Abbo, a candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) who was earlier declared winner of the March 25 at the National Assembly election.

Abbo at a briefing later said Akpabio was behind his sacking because he (Abbo) failed to work for his (Akpabio’s) senate presidential bid.

The sacked senator said Akpabio had four other senators he wad plotting to send away from the upper chamber.

SaharaReporters on June 14 also reported that Ndume, Senator representing Borno South District, in Borno State, said he should not be held accountable if Akpabio turned out to be the worst senate president.

Ndume had during an interview on Channels TV said he believed he should not share in any liability attached to Akpabio’s performance.

Ndume was one of those who spearheaded the campaign for Akpabio and Deputy Speaker Barau Jibrin, leading up to their election.

The senator when asked if Akpabio’s performance should reflect on him as one of his endorsers argued that Akpabio should be held accountable for his actions.

He said, “I don’t think that is right. I’m not Akpabio. Even before God, Akpabio will account for his own; I will account [for mine].”

“I said he’s the best,” the Majority Leader of the ninth Senate said.

“If he turns out being the worst, I’m not going to be responsible. How can you hold me accountable? I didn’t force anybody to vote. I believe he’s the best, but I don’t know what he will do tomorrow. I can’t say that.”

  • SENATE: Chief Whip, Ndume, stages walkout in protest over Akpabio’s style

The Nigerian Senate was on Tuesday, forced into an emergency closed-door session after Chief Whip, Senator Ali Ndume angrily staged a walkout following a shouting match with Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The altercation was caused when Akpabio reportedly ruled Ndume out of order when the Borno Senator was about raising a point during plenary which led Ndume to angrily walk out.

According to reports from the Red Chamber, Ndume had raised a point of order, citing order 54 of the Senate Rule Book to draw the attention of the Senate President to his handling of affairs in the chambers which were against the rules.

  • Royal Caribbean sends cruise ship to rescue Americans from Israel

Royal Caribbean has partnered with the U.S. Department of State to send a cruise ship to Israel to rescue Americans who have not been able to leave the country.

In a letter to employees, Royal Caribbean Group CEO Jason Liberty announced that Rhapsody of the Seas would be used to safely evacuate American citizens. The ship had its sailings in the region canceled after the Hamas attack from Gaza Strip on Israel last week and the Israeli response that has left thousands of Israelis and Palestinians dead.

The State Department said Sunday the number of Americans killed in the conflict since it began has risen to 30, and that it believed several Americans were among the nearly 200 people Hamas kidnapped after the surprise attack on Oct. 7.

“Now, with enhanced safety precautions in place, our ship is providing free passage, including accommodation and food, for Americans in the region wishing to leave and find safer ground,” Liberty wrote.

The ship has a guest capacity of 2,416. Several foreigners in the country were stranded as airlines canceled service to the beleaguered country.

“This has truly been an incredible effort as our teams worked tirelessly over the past week to make this mission possible,” Liberty wrote. “My heartfelt gratitude goes out to all involved and especially to the ship’s officers and crew for their unwavering support of this call to serve others in the midst of unimaginable tragedy.”

The cruise line did not say to were the ship would head after departing Israel.

“It is in challenging times like these that the phenomenal spirit and values of our collective Royal Caribbean Group team shines,” he wrote.

Also this weekend, the first of what Gov. Ron DeSantis said would be several rescue charter flight arrived in Tampa, bringing with it 270 passengers from Israel, most of whom were Americans.

South African digital identity startup, iiDENTIFii, has joined forces with Zambian bank Zanaco to introduce its identity solution to consumers and citizens in Zambia.

iiDENTIFii has developed face authentication technology that verifies users via their mobile phones or computers within seconds.

The startup serves multiple industry sectors and counts major pan-African banks, insurers, and mining companies among its clientele for both customer and employee authentication.

Having secured $15 million in growth capital last year to fuel its expansion across Africa, iiDENTIFii has now teamed up with Zanaco, a leading bank, to launch its operations in Zambia.

This partnership aims to make identity verification, along with the benefits it offers, accessible to a broader audience.

Gur Geva, the founder and CEO of iiDENTIFii, highlighted the significance of this venture by saying, “In Zambia, we aim to address challenges related to digital exclusion, limited access to services, and identity fraud.

“Many individuals across the continent lack recognized identification, which hampers their access to banking, healthcare, and government services.”

He continued, “Collaborating with financial institutions like Zanaco is pivotal. By integrating our identity verification solutions, Zanaco can extend its reach to underserved populations, enabling them to open bank accounts, access credit, and make secure transactions.

“This partnership not only fosters financial inclusion but also strengthens data protection and security, driving positive change in Zambia’s digital landscape.”

South Africa’s commercial real estate sector is on the brink of a transformative shift as Dutch-based technology platform, Lisa BV, unveils its smart leasing platform in the country, marking a significant development in the proptech landscape.

This pivotal move follows Lisa BV’s acquisition of the core leasing technology platform from Inospace, South Africa’s largest last-mile logistics operator.

The announcement was made by Rael Levitt, the Founder and CEO of Inospace, who heralded the arrival of Lisa’s proptech solution.

Under the terms of the deal, Inospace has entered into a three-year license agreement with Lisa to oversee its extensive half-a-million-square-meter property portfolio.

Valued at approximately US$20 million, the smart leasing platform recently secured over US$2 million in funding, with Buffet Investments, led by South African property billionaire Jonathan Beare, playing a significant role in the funding round.

Lisa’s platform represents a substantial leap forward in the proptech sector, offering a comprehensive suite of services to property owners, managers, brokers, and tenants.

The platform’s flagship product, Lease, automates lead-to-lease processes for multi-let property companies, optimizing and expediting transactions.

Rael Levitt elaborated on Inospace’s decision to transfer its leasing-focused technology to Lisa, stating, “Inospace’s choice to sell its leasing technology to Lisa underscores the growing demand for efficient, technology-driven solutions in the South African commercial property market.

“Our smart leasing platform has revolutionized Inospace’s operations, enabling us to be more agile and responsive to market demands.”

    4. FTC issues warning on crypto deposits not being FDIC insured

The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued a consumer warning, cautioning that cryptocurrency deposits are not protected by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).

The agency emphasized that if a crypto company faces financial difficulties, the funds are not insured or guaranteed by the FDIC, and the government may not be obligated to intervene and help recover the deposited money.

FTC’s Consumer Education Specialist, Cristina Miranda, clarified the distinction, stating that deposits in FDIC-insured banks are safeguarded up to $250,000 in case of a bank’s failure.

However, she emphasized that the situation is different when it comes to funds deposited with crypto-based financial services providers.

Speaking on the development, she said, “The funds you deposit with a crypto-based financial services provider… That money isn’t FDIC insured or protected if the crypto company goes under.”

Miranda referenced an example involving Voyager Digital LLC, a crypto-based financial services provider that had falsely claimed that money deposited through the “Voyager App” was FDIC insured in case of any issues.

She clarified that Voyager was never an FDIC-insured bank, and FDIC insurance does not cover cryptocurrencies or crypto assets.

  • Malaysia pulls out of Frankfurt book fair, citing organisers’ pro-Israel posture

Malaysia’s education ministry has withdrawn from participating in the Frankfurt Book Fair, accusing the organisers of taking a pro-Israel stance amid growing global divisions over the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine.

The move by Malaysia to pull out of what is considered the world’s largest trade fair for books came after literary association Litprom said it would postpone an award ceremony for a novel by a Palestinian author at the event following the deadly Oct. 7 attack by militant group Hamas in Israel.

The fair’s organiser also said on Facebook it would be making Jewish and Israeli voices “especially visible” at this year’s edition.

In a statement late on Monday, Malaysia’s education ministry said that “the ministry will not compromise with Israel’s violence in Palestine, which violates international laws and human rights.

“The decision (to withdraw) is in line with the government’s stand to be in solidarity and offer full support for Palestine.”

Malaysia has long supported the Palestinian cause, with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim saying he did not agree with Western pressure to condemn Hamas.

On Tuesday, Mr Anwar called for an immediate end to bombardment in Gaza and establishing a humanitarian corridor, following a phone conversation with Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.

  • 2,000 US troops preparing for deployment to support Israel

The United States military has chosen about 2,000 American troops to potentially deploy to support Israel, U.S. defense officials said, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The selected troops are currently stationed in the Middle East and other locations, including Europe, officials said, adding the troops are not expected to serve in combat roles. Instead, they will provide advising and medical support.

It is unclear what could trigger the deployment.

The deployment preparations come after the U.S. State Department announced Sunday that the number of Americans killed in the recent Hamas terrorist attacks against Israel has increased to 30.

According to a statement attributed to a State Department official, the government has been able to “confirm the deaths of 30 U.S. citizens” in Israel. In addition to the American citizens who have been killed in Israel, the State Department official confirmed that multiple U.S. citizens are currently missing in Israel.

“At this time, we can confirm the deaths of 30 U.S. citizens,” the statement said. “We extend our deepest condolences to the victims and to the families of all those affected. At this time, we are also aware of 13 American nationals who are unaccounted-for.”

During an interview on CBS’ “60 Minutes” that aired Sunday, President Joe Biden cautioned Israel against occupying Gaza in the wake of the attacks.

“I think it’d be a big mistake. What happened in Gaza, in my view, is Hamas and the extreme elements of Hamas don’t represent all the Palestinian people,” Biden said. “I think that it would be a mistake for Israel to occupy Gaza again. But going in and taking out the extremists…is a necessary requirement.”
