Twelve young ladies were on Tuesday arraigned at an Abeokuta magistrates’ court over alleged prostitution and indecent behaviour.

They were arraigned on a two-count charge of prostitution, behaving disorderly and indecently in a public place and constituting a nuisance.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges against them.

The prosecutor, Insp. Olaide Rawlings told the court that the defendants committed the offence on Sunday at Iwe-Irohin along Oke-Ilewo road and the Skate Ground in the Panseke area in Abeokuta.

Ms Rawlings said the defendants were parading themselves in an unruly manner and constituting a nuisance in public places to wit prostitution and other sex work.

She added that some policemen arrested them.

The prosecutor, however, noted that the offences contravene sections 225A(4) and 249(1)(a) of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun, 2006.

The magistrate, A. K. Araba, granted the defendants N200,000 bail each with one surety in like sum, who must be a registered Bondsman with the Ogun State Judiciary.

She then adjourned the case until November 10 for a hearing.

  • Photos show ‘filth’ at illegal Chinese-owned California COVID lab: ‘Happening all over US’

    From New York Post:

New photos show the “filth” and unsafe conditions in which an illegal Chinese-owned lab in California carried out risky research on mice genetically altered to carry COVID-19, according to records obtained by a conservative legal group.

The Fresno County Public Health Department revealed the “hazardous and non-compliant conditions” of the illicit lab, which kept SARS-CoV-2 and other “infectious agents.”

The stunning assessment was found in responsive documents from a California Public Records Act request made by Judicial Watch.

“Americans should know that dangerous biological research doesn’t just occur in ‘Wuhan,’ it is happening all over the United States,” Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said in a statement.

  • Wexner Foundation cuts ties with Harvard

The Wexner Foundation, a nonprofit created by Victoria’s Secret founder Leslie Wexner, has taken a bold step by severing its connection with Harvard University as a result of the university’s “dismal failure” to condemn the brutal killing of Israeli civilians by Hamas.

In a firm letter dispatched to Harvard’s board on Monday, the foundation, started by Wexner and his wife Abigail, stated, “We are stunned and sickened by the dismal failure of Harvard’s leadership to take a clear and unequivocal stance against the barbaric murders of innocent Israeli civilians.”

The letter, later shared by StopAntisemitism, further detailed how the lack of condemnation from Harvard against the brutal Hamas attacks against Israel left Israeli students at the college feeling “abandoned.”

The issue was intensified when 34 student groups published a letter that held Israel “entirely responsible” for the attacks on its citizens. “In the absence of this clear moral stand, we have determined that the Harvard Kennedy School and the Wexner Foundation are no longer compatible partners,” the foundation’s letter stated.

The Wexner Foundation’s disassociation with Harvard is not the first demonstration of disapproval towards the school’s response. Previously, Israeli billionaire Idan Ofer and his wife, Batia, resigned from the executive board of the Harvard Kennedy School, echoing similar disappointments, according to The New York Post.

A representative from Harvard conveyed gratitude to the Wexner Foundation for support over the years in a statement to CNN, saying, “We are grateful to the Wexner Foundation for its very long-standing support of student scholarships.”

The Harvard spokesperson also referenced a video statement from Harvard University President Claudine Gay. In the video, Gay emphasized Harvard’s commitment to free expression, even if those views are “objectionable” or “outrageous.” She noted, “We do not punish or sanction people for expressing such views, but that is a far cry from endorsing them.”

The university’s response also faced backlash from former university president, Larry Summers, and Bill Ackman, the founder of the multibillion-dollar hedge fund Pershing Square Capital Management. Both demanded a clear stance from Harvard on the issue.

“In nearly 50 years of @Harvard affiliation, I have never been as disillusioned and alienated as I am today,’ Summers tweeted.

Ackman has also urged for the release of names of students associated with the anti-Israeli statement.

  • Video: FactChecking Social Media Misinformation

Hearst Television, which has been one of our media partners since 2019, recently featured our work in a “Get the Facts” segment on how to detect social media misinformation.

The segment includes two of our recent articles about the Israel-Hamas war — one about a viral video clip that took former President Donald Trump’s remarks about Israel out of context and another about social media posts that shared a doctored “memorandum” from the White House on aid to Israel.

In her segment, Hearst Washington correspondent Jackie DeFusco also provides tools and best practices that we use to separate fact from fiction. For instance, TinEye — a reverse image search tool — can determine whether an image has been previously published online and, if so, where and when.

SaharaReporters earlier reported how the terrorists kidnapped the students at a hostel in the school 13 days ago.

Terrorists who kidnapped five female students of Federal University Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State, Northwest Nigeria, have refused to release them despite collecting about N2.5million from the victims’ families.

SaharaReporters earlier reported how the terrorists kidnapped the students at a hostel in the school 13 days ago.

SaharaReporters also reported that the kidnappers contacted one of the victims, Muhammad Fatima’s father, Muhammed Saba Ibrahim, to demand N2 million for the release of his daughter.

Speaking further on the matter on Tuesday during a conversation with SaharaReporters, a cousin of Fatima said that the family later negotiated with the terrorist to reduce the demanded ransom.

“The parents negotiated with them to reduce the ransom to 0.5million (N500,000) and we paid per head for the five students,” Fatima’s cousin said.

He added that despite paying this agreed sum, the terrorists still refused to release the abductees.

“They demanded another ransom from both the government and the school management,” he added.

When asked about how much the new demand made by the terrorists was, he stated, “We didn’t hear that from the government but they demanded N2million per head from the School management.”

  • Makinde approved promotion of over 7,000 workers in Oyo: Official

On Tuesday, the Oyo State government revealed that since 2022, over 7,000 eligible workers have been promoted.

The state’s Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, disclosed this in Ibadan after the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting.

“The Makinde-led government has conducted the 2017–2021 promotion exercise as well as approved the 2022 promotion,’’ he said.

Mr Oyelade added that the exercise was consistent with the government’s policy on workers’ welfare within the last four years.

Similarly, the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Musbau Babatunde, disclosed that SEC had approved the realignment of the 2023 supplementary budget.

He said the supplementary budget would soon be presented to the state House of Assembly for approval.

Mr Babatunde further explained that the supplementary budget was necessitated following subsidy removal and the exchange rate unification.

However, the Budget and Economic Planning Commissioner said there was an increment in the 2023 budget from N310.4 billion to N352.3 billion.

He said this was to realign the funds in some Ministries, Departments, and Agencies and reflect economic realities.

Mr Babatunde added that the state government was currently negotiating with organised labour on other demands that would be included in the supplementary budget.

“The medium-term expenditure framework (MTEF), on which the 2024 budget would be premised, has been approved by the council,’’ he stated.

Mr Babatunde said the approved figure for this is N424.4 billion, an increase of N69.2 billion, representing 19.49 per cent over the 2023 pre-empted figure of N355.1 billion.

“The current realigned budget of N352.3 billion mirrors Oyo State government’s projection perfectly for 2023,’’ he said.

The commissioner said it was expected that the MTEF would be a good guide for the fiscal balance of the 2024 budget.

  • “Asking for Trouble:” State Gives Illegal Immigrants Driver’s License that Looks Exactly like Legal Residents’

This month Minnesota became the latest state to allow illegal immigrants to get a driver’s license as part of a burgeoning national trend to reward undocumented residents with government benefits. In all, 19 states and the District of Columbia have passed bills that permit foreigners living in the U.S. illegally to obtain driver’s licenses. Earlier this year laws went into effect in Massachusetts and Rhode Island and a few weeks ago Minnesota’s measure, known as Driver’s Licenses for All, went into effect. Officials estimate that about 80,000 illegal immigrants who were previously disqualified from obtaining the cards in the North Star state will now be allowed to get them.

California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington are the other states that let illegal aliens get driver’s licenses. Typically, candidates need only to present a foreign passport or birth certificate or a consular card along with evidence that they live in the state. Open border groups and their leftist allies in local governments across the nation assert that granting illegal aliens driver’s licenses benefits everyone because it makes roads safer, therefore improving public safety. In New York City, officials cite unspecified “data” that shows expanding driver’s license eligibility to illegal immigrants improves road safety and lowers insurance premiums for all. Besides “making our roads safer,” Illinois’ governor says giving illegal aliens licenses decreases stigma and creates a more equitable system for all.

Minnesota officials used similar narratives to push through their legislation. The governor, Tim Walz, said ensuring that drivers are licensed and carry insurance makes the roads more secure for all Minnesotans. “As a longtime supporter of this bill, I am proud to finally sign it into law, making our roads safer and moving us toward our goal of making Minnesota the best state to raise a family for everyone,” the Democrat lawmaker said in a statement when he proudly signed the measure earlier this year. The state’s lieutenant governor explained that the new law makes sure children and families “can come out of the shadows” and that all residents have opportunities to thrive, succeed, grow, and live their fullest lives. “From picking a child up from school to driving to a doctor’s appointment, driver’s licenses help us safely access essential services and navigate our lives,” the lieutenant governor, Penny Flanagan, said.

Under the new law Minnesota’s Department of Vehicle Services (DVS) is prohibited from asking driver’s license applicants about immigration status or from placing any special identifier on the card indicating immigration status. The state agency is also banned from providing information to federal authorities for the purpose of civil immigration enforcement. Additionally, Minnesota is taking extra steps to assist illegal aliens obtain a license. Applicants can take the test in nine different languages and the actual exam can be given orally by a translator in the person’s native language to assist those who have difficulty comprehending the written test or who may be illiterate. Driving manuals are also available in multiple languages as well as interpreters to guide foreigners through the road skills test. It is not clear how much the extra services will cost taxpayers.

It is important to note that earlier this year Minnesota enacted a law that provides automatic voter registration for those who apply for a driver’s license, even though the law requires U.S. citizenship to vote. Granting illegal immigrants driver’s licenses inevitably creates the risk that they may vote in an election since the state will not distinguish between the cards issued to legal residents, American citizens or illegal aliens. At least one state lawmaker finds this concerning and points out that “allowing an undocumented immigrant to acquire a driver’s license that looks exactly like a license used by a legal Minnesota resident is asking for trouble.” The Republican, House member John Petersburg, says there are no safeguards in the new law, which means the potential is high for voting and state program abuse.
